June is here, that means it is time for us to pick a new book to read!
I was thinking, with all the comic book goodness in theaters this summer, at least one of our books should be a graphic novel. Therefore, with the arrival of the “man-mountain” Bane in Christopher Nolan‘s upcoming The Dark Knight Rises in theaters next month, I went on a hunt for a read that could demonstrate the true threat of this character – physical and otherwise – and came up with (drum roll, please): Batman Knightfall Part One: Broken Bat written by Doug Moench and Chuck Dixon, distributed by DC Comics.
The best description of this book that I can find, that does not spoil the entire story (in case you haven’t already read this book) is from its listing on Amazon.com:
This riveting book sets Batman on a path that will change his life forever. A mass escape from Arkham Asylum and the emergence of Batman’s most threatening foe, Bane, sends Gotham City spinning into chaos and takes Batman to the limits of human endurance! These volume is required reading for every Batman fan.
So, readers go out and get your copies (maybe you just need to grab it off your shelf and dust it off). If you are a long-time Batman and Detective Comics collector, this book contains Batman #491-497 and Detective Comics #659-663, so you can read along that way if you would like. Whatever way, you get your Knightfall get ready for some Arkam insanity, some big time Bane bashing and a litany of Gotham lunatics. Most of all, remember what the tagline tells us:
Every man has a breaking point… even The Batman!
I’ll be checking in here at Word of the Nerd next week to see how everyone’s reading is going and we’ll have our online discussion via the Word of the Nerd FB page and Twitter (follow #wotnbc) at the end of the month (how does June 30th sound?).
If you are new to the book club, check out the Word of the Nerd Book Club page to see what this is all about.
Finally, now it is your turn: In the comments below, let me know what you think of this month’s choice. Have you read it before? Will you read along with us? Also, is there a book you’ve been wanting to discuss with some nerdy friends? Let us know what it is!
Happy Reading!!
About Nicole Rivera
After 12 years of teaching high school math, Nicole put down her calculator and embraced her MacBook. She's finally accepted that her owl from Hogwarts will never show, but checks every night to see if the Doctor in his big blue box has come to whisk her away. While she waits she reads whatever she can get her hands on, works on her novel and watches more movies and TV than is probably healthy.
