What began as an April Fool’s Day stint for Cartoon Network has begun to explode on Twitter. Adult Swim essentially “cosplayed” as the old Toonami programming on April 1st, and the fan response to this was absolutely huge and overwhelmingly positive. In response, Cartoon Network sent out the following tweet.

That tweet has been retweeted nearly 14,000 times as of the writing of this article. (With Twitter, that number will increase rapidly as the hours wear on.) The fan response is completely enthusiastic about the idea of bringing back the programming block, which was cancelled in 2008 after an eleven-year run.

Toonami holds a special place in the hearts of my generation of nerds. It was what introduced us to anime. It brought us a tidal wave of cartoon goodness that was so different from the American cartoons we watched the rest of the time. It showcased art-styles we were unfamiliar with. (And it made us feel pretty freaking adult staying up that late to watch Outlaw Star and Voltron.)

If you also feel that there is a substantial lacki of Powerpuff Girls, Sailor Moon, or Dragonball Z in your life or the lives of your children, now is the time to speak up. Cartoon Network has asked to hear our voices, and we have the opportunity to bring them together in a unified front under a single hashtag.
