Comic Books – A Journey Begins

Confession: Comic books have never been something that I’ve really gotten into. I had a few Supergirl, Spider-Girl, and Wonder Woman comics in high school, but that was about it. They were fun, but they really didn’t do anything for me.

Recently, though, I’ve had the desire to try again. I’ve become aware of the breadth of topics and genres that comic books can cover. Plus, as it turns out, some of my fandoms have their own comics. Which certainly motivates me to pick some up.

Picking a Title

Mass EffectThe question is, where to begin? I went to Free Comic Book Day with my friend and co-blogger, Claire. There were several books that I picked up that looked interesting, but the one that caught my eye the most was the Mass Effect comic.

Mass Effect is one of my major fandoms at this point, and I’ve been feeling a bit bummed since I finished the third game. So getting a chance to continue the story was really appealing to me. The comic was actually a three in one. It also contained R.I.P.D (a police department to protect the living from the dead), and The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys (based around the My Chemical Romance album of the same name). If you were trying to get me to read comic books Dark Horse, well played.

What I Thought

The Mass Effect comic was short, but good. The story stayed true to the characters, and I don’t feel it gave away anything if you hadn’t read the other comics or played the games. It didn’t get me hooked, but it’s definitely something I’ll be looking at pursuing.

R.I.P.D was alright, but it just wasn’t something I was into. However, The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys I found very interesting. I love the album because of the story it builds, so getting more of the story awesome for me.

Where Do I Go From Here?

The True Lives of the Fabulous KilljoysI still have several comics from Free Comic Book day to get through, so I can’t say for sure that I’ll continue reading any of these series. I’ll likely try the first issue of The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys because I love dystopian cyberpunk. From what I understand, the Mass Effect comics take place around the time of Mass Effect 2, so I’ll probably save those for my next play through of the game.

My friends have recommended a handful of titles, Atomic Robo and Y The Last Man for example. While I start on my journey, is there anything you think I should check out?

I have been more and more into comics lately. I missed out on free comic book day because of being at home sick with the sick baby but I don’t mind buying them. I’ve got a copy of Tanpopo coming as well as Zombilenium I might have spelled that wrong. I really like slave labor comics and I’m exploring the diff comic publishers. I’m glad to see another female on here getting into it! I plan to post my reviews on them on my blog, I’m so looking forward to reading more of them. I’m such ant illustration junky haha,

During the Apocalypse I can be found looting my local bookstore

Most of the comics from Free Comic Book Day are available free on through Comixology or Dark Horse. I’m not opposed to paying either, but there is such a wide breadth of comics out there the opportunity to get previews for free helps me narrow the field a bit.

    I’ll check out your recommendations!
