Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to Produce Reality Series

Television network TNT’s first shot at reality TV, The Great Escape, was met with a fairly lackluster reception. They are hoping to still get a slice of the reality pie before the fad has run its course with a show tentatively titled “The Hero“. The show is set to premier in 2013 starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson who will also serve as executive producer along with production partner Dany Garcia. The idea for the series comes from the minds of Craig Armstrong and Rick Ringbakk of 5×5 Media along with Charles Wachter and Ben Silverman who worked on the NBC reality series Fashion Star.

Preliminary plans for The Hero will follow 10 ordinary people  (or as ordinary as reality TV will allow) living in a house. During their stay in the house, various missions will be given to them to test the participants’ intellect, physical prowess and even their morality. This will follow the tenet of most reality programs based on competition. They will have to weigh working together and against each other while figuring how much to sacrifice to get themselves in a position to overcome all obstacles to be declared the true hero.

Johnson will be serving as a mentor to the contestants pushing and guiding them to achieve their goals. Ultimately, however, it will be up to the viewers to vote each week through various social media formats to decide who is the most heroic contestant of the week. The show will be heavily reliant on social media, as the creators plan to use various sites during pre-production, casting and even for live broadcasts.

Johnson has millions of fans worldwide which will help give the show a boost as many follow him on Twitter and Facebook. Eight episodes have been ordered so far with a summer 2013 release. The show has promise and will possibly bring TNT into the reality TV world by providing a unique creation in a genre that is full of copycats.

About Shannon Chrismon

Shannon likes to think of herself as a Renaissance woman. She enjoys learning and will seek out new information if only for the purpose of knowing it. Curiosity surely hasn't killed this cat but it has definitely filled her head with volumes of random trivia and nerdy conversation starters. She enjoys literature of all types and at any given time could be found reading anything from the latest Dean Koontz novel, to this month's Deadpool, or even a collection of Richard Feynman lectures. She shares her little corner of the world with boyfriend Mike, lucky to have found someone who likes a girl with lot of nerd DNA.
