Elder Scrolls MMO CONFIRMED!

You heard me right. Only minutes ago, GameInformer brought us the awesome news that there will indeed be an Elder Scrolls MMO – and it might be closer than you think! And hot off the release of Kinect support for Skyrim, timing could not be better.

The June cover for Game Informer broke the news – and this cover story is going to take us all across Tamriel.

Developed by the team at Zenimax Online Studios, The Elder Scrolls Online merges the unmatched exploration of rich worlds that the franchise is known for with the scale and social aspects of a massively multiplayer online role-playing game. Players will discover an entirely new chapter of Elder Scrolls history in this ambitious world, set a millennium before the events of Skyrim as the daedric prince Molag Bal tries to pull all of Tamriel into his demonic realm.

“It will be extremely rewarding finally to unveil what we have been developing the last several years,” said game director and MMO veteran Matt Firor, whose previous work includes Mythic’s well-received Dark Age of Camelot. “The entire team is committed to creating the best MMO ever made – and one that is worthy of The Elder Scrolls franchise.”

The game is set to come out for PC and Mac in 2013.

Looks like I’m getting a new desktop.

Check out the full cover art for the new GameInformer below and stay tuned because tomorrow, we’ll get our very first teaser trailer.

Interesting. I’m curious, but cautious. Part of the wonder of the Elder Scrolls is the impact you have on the world. That naturally has to go away in an MMO. Murder and stealing will lose meaning since everything will have to respawn due to the sheer number of PC players.

It really is a bit of a conundrum. Now that the initial A:tLA Foaming Mouth Guy has worn off, I have a lot of questions. Will it be subscription-based? How will they keep the Elder Scrolls feel? Will I ACTUALLY have access to ALL of Tamriel? It’s an interesting thing, and I am really looking forward to seeing more about it as things progress.

In the meantime, there’s always more to do in Skyrim. ;)

Wayne just made me want player vs. player theft functionality and home security. I don’t know how this will be done yet but it sounds fun.
