Fathom – Volume #4 Issue #7 Review

In issue #7 of Michael Turner’s Fathom we are treated to an undersea (and under-desert as it turns out) struggle. In issue #6 our heroine, Aspen Matthews, was caught by the Father of the Church while fighting through the Church of the Eternal Depths. Nakamura has waited for quite some time to get his revenge on his former workers who mutinied against him and left to form the Church. Using Aspen as a distraction and if need be, a sacrifice, he takes the opportunity to attack.

In order to free herself and her friends, who are being held in the jail of the Church she must make an alliance with her captors. During the attack she is able to free herself and use her abilities to convince the Father to help her free her friends in return for her help to get revenge on Nakamura. Throughout the battle Aspen must make her way through flooded levels of the Church to reach the escape and the cells her friends are being held in.

David Wohl writes the issue and does a great job of creating a suspenseful, breath-holding experience for the reader. During the times where the Father of the Church is being led through flooded areas by Aspen you may even find yourself holding your breath as he has to. Alex Konat provides the art while Beth Sotelo provides the colors. Between the two of them they are able to set the scene with vivid images of the underwater battle that brings you right into the heart of the action.

This issue is definitely one to pick up and leaves us with a classic Fathom cliffhanger making sure that we do not want to miss issue #8 so we can find out what happens to our merry little band as they fight their way up and out of the depths.

About Shannon Chrismon

Shannon likes to think of herself as a Renaissance woman. She enjoys learning and will seek out new information if only for the purpose of knowing it. Curiosity surely hasn't killed this cat but it has definitely filled her head with volumes of random trivia and nerdy conversation starters. She enjoys literature of all types and at any given time could be found reading anything from the latest Dean Koontz novel, to this month's Deadpool, or even a collection of Richard Feynman lectures. She shares her little corner of the world with boyfriend Mike, lucky to have found someone who likes a girl with lot of nerd DNA.
