Gaiman Announces Sandman to Return in 2013

Although not in attendance at San Diego Comic Con, Neil Gaiman certainly had everyone’s attention as this video announcement was launched.  We were so darn excited about this over here at Word of the Nerd we actually needed half a day to compose ourselves.

Having re-read Sandman last summer (read Proffitt’s and my Good Girls Gone Geek Sandman discussions here), I am even more thrilled about this news. How the ever Twittering/journaling/public speaking Gaiman kept this secret for 18 months, I will never understand. But kudos, the man can keep a fabulous secret.

The new story will be published by Vertigo in 2013 and focus on the events that occurred to Dream just prior to his capture in Burgess’ basement. An event that was only hinted at twice in the series, but never told.  A devastating event that apparently weakened him a great deal for him to be susceptible to such a human trap as Burgess had set.  The art will be done by J H Williams III.  If you are familiar with Williams’ work, you are probably even more excited.  His art will be the perfect match for the world of Sandman.  He mixes the whimsical and fantastical with the more stoic and edgy.

This is not the first time Gaiman has revisited the Dreaming since he ended the series’ run, but it’s exciting news nonetheless.  Being an event that was hinted at in the original run makes it seem more part of the series than just an additional tale, like Dream Hunters.

I think a friend summed it up perfectly when they asked if there was a cloud 20 because this is way above cloud 9 on the happy scale.  Are you excited for the new tale? What do you hope to learn or see? What Endless favorites do you hope make an appearance?

About Becca N

A lack of a set bedtime, no cable tv, and a mom with a penchant for scary movie when she was a child led to a grown up Bex still with no set bedtime and a love of the sci-fi/fantasy genre. A mega fan of Neil Gaiman, Supernatural, and all things Whedon. She tends to be the voice of reason, keeps Proffitt up after her bedtime, and play devil's advocate to keep the nerds here from getting too full of themselves. She can also be found at Good Girls Gone Geek with childhood pal Rachel Proffitt. Oh, and she wants you all to know Batman is way cooler than Superman.
