An upcoming episode of the crime comedy-drama Castle will be offered with a generous serving of nerd manna. Not only will the episode center around a murder at a Comic-Con inspired setting but it was also be directed by Star Trek the Next Generation’s Jonathan Frakes. As everyone knows Frakes was second in command on the Enterprise D and E during the Star Trek TNG series and subsequent movies, but what some may not know is that he is equally talented behind the cameras. Aside from a number of episodes across the Star Trek franchise, Frakes also directed for shows such as Roswell, NCIS: Los Angeles, Burn Notice and Leverage just to name a few.
This will not be the first episode of Castle that Frakes has directed. In season 2 of the series he directed the episode Kill the Messenger. However, the upcoming episode should prove to be a fun time for all involved with it having a science fiction theme. Castle has been able to add a good amount of comedy to the serious job of solving murders and the chemistry between Nathon Fillon as novelist Richard Castle and Stana Katic as detective Kate Beckett.
We can only guess at the science fiction references we will be treated to throughout the episode. There have been subtle references to Fillon’s former show Firefly throughout the series and a number of Star Trek actors have had cameos. This episode’s setting however will give the creators free reign to be obvious and up front with the references and even make them a part of the plot. Maybe we’ll have Fillon run into a convention attendee dressed as his Firefly character, Captain Malcolm Reynolds, giving him a knowing look of recognition like Mel Gibson and Danny Glover did in Maverick acknowledging their Lethal Weapon days. Perhaps we could have the characters come across a Commander Riker image and comment on how they heard that the actor who played him directs now. The possibilities are endless and I’m sure fans have plenty of ideas they would love to see. The only way to find out will be to watch the show when season 5 starts up on September 24th.
About Shannon Chrismon
Shannon likes to think of herself as a Renaissance woman. She enjoys learning and will seek out new information if only for the purpose of knowing it. Curiosity surely hasn't killed this cat but it has definitely filled her head with volumes of random trivia and nerdy conversation starters. She enjoys literature of all types and at any given time could be found reading anything from the latest Dean Koontz novel, to this month's Deadpool, or even a collection of Richard Feynman lectures. She shares her little corner of the world with boyfriend Mike, lucky to have found someone who likes a girl with lot of nerd DNA.
