Cameron Diaz stars as a self-serving middle school teacher with the sole purpose of finding a rich husband to take care of her. After a failed attempt to land a well off hubby, she is forced back into her old teaching job. Along comes Justin Timberlake as a do-gooder nerd who just happens to be the heir to a huge family fortune. Cameron’s character sets her sights on Timberlake as a means out of her horrible life. She lies, manipulates and steals her way into his life only to find out that he isn’t all she hoped he would be.
I wish I could say that I enjoyed Bad Teacher, but as the name implies the movie itself fails to deliver. After a pretty promising start and throwing out one of the funniest lines I’ve heard since The Hangover, this film just falls flat. Cameron Diaz does a great job in her role, but it seems that the writing held her and the entire cast back when it wasn’t necessary.
Far be it for me to say that this movie lacked the raunchy humor that the title promised, but it’s true. People going to this film expecting something along the lines of Bad Santa or The Hangover are going to be very disappointed. That’s not to say that the film is totally without laughs. Jason Segel (How I Met Your Mother) is great but very under utilized. Besides Diaz performance which was good in spite of the poor writing another breakout in this movie is Lucy Punch who plays Diaz’s rival at the school. Punch’s character was just bat-shit crazy funny and if they ever made a spin-off or sequel, I would like it to be about her. There were times that I was more interested in Punch than I was Diaz.
Most scenes were either uninteresting or not funny. Many of them could have used more inappropriate humor. I loved Bad Santa and as an example of one of the best inappropriately funny movies, this film could have used some of it’s fair and humor. The tender scenes were just too sappy and the funny scenes weren’t funny enough. Bad Teacher isn’t one of the worst comedies I’ve seen, but it is far from the best. In a summer season of potentially great movies, this is yet another disappointment.
The Nerd gives Bad Teacher 2 out of 5.
