Star Trek Into Darkness to be Bigger and Bolder than the First

With a tentative May release we still have a while to wait until the Star Trek sequel hits the theaters. Although that’s a good eight months away, news and rumors related to the movie are starting to come to light. Multiple sources have reported the title as being Star Trek Into Darkness although Paramount has not yet confirmed it. The studio has registered two domain names, www.startrekintoddarkness.com and www.startrekintodarknessmovie.com however, as of today there is no content on either of the pages. IMDB.com does have Star Trek Into Darkness as the title on their page for the movie.

As J.J Abrams is known to be a bit secretive, the plot of the movie is still unknown, but Trekkies have jumped on the news of the title trying to find clues in the two words. Into Darkness could mean almost anything and at this point it is all just fun speculation. Another point of curiousity is that it seems that the semicolon used in sequel titles (Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek: Nemesis) is omitted leaving some to speculate if the Trek in Star Trek could have a double meaning.

Zachary Quinto, who played the young Spock in the first movie and returns in the sequel,  is not willing to give away details about the plot but has said this movie is going to be bigger and bolder than the first. This mirrors the statement made by Chris Pine, who is returning to play Captain Kirk, that the threat the crew will face is much greater than in the first movie. Seeing as we witnessed the destruction of an entire planet and nearly an entire race in the first, saying that the sequel will be a much larger scale just makes waiting for the movie even more excruciating.

The creative team is working on how they want to debut the title. Needless to say this will be just the beginning of the excitement that will surround the movie until, and well after, its release in May 2013. So let the debate begin, what do you think the title could mean? Is the exclusion of the semicolon a typo or a clue to where the crew will be “trekking” into? We have eight months of discussion and something tells me when we find out we will still be blown away by the reality.

Here are a couple of images that appear to have been leaked from the set.

About Shannon Chrismon

Shannon likes to think of herself as a Renaissance woman. She enjoys learning and will seek out new information if only for the purpose of knowing it. Curiosity surely hasn't killed this cat but it has definitely filled her head with volumes of random trivia and nerdy conversation starters. She enjoys literature of all types and at any given time could be found reading anything from the latest Dean Koontz novel, to this month's Deadpool, or even a collection of Richard Feynman lectures. She shares her little corner of the world with boyfriend Mike, lucky to have found someone who likes a girl with lot of nerd DNA.

Cumberbatch’s character (and his stand in) is wearing a star fleet uniform, the black shirt kirk was wearing in the first (JJ’s) movie. You can see the delta icon on the shirt.
