David S. Goyer has one of the most fun, and stressful, jobs right now as he pens the screenplay for the highly anticipated Batman/Superman blockbuster, which is set to release in July 2015. In a video on Yahoo!, Goyer admits that the film is “a bit further along…” than we currently know. He also explains how he does not allow the fans to influence his writing, saying that he “can’t hold himself back…you can’t stop being creative…you have to write the story you want to write and hope the fans like it.”
Goyer isn’t known as being one of the elite screenwriters of our day, in fact there were many complaints about plot holes in last summer’s Man of Steel. So, this may trouble some fans, who have a concrete expectation of how the events of the first meeting between the two most famous superheroes should unfold on the big screen, including myself. But I do like how confident he is in his writing abilities and how he believes that he can put a great representation of the characters in the movie; that’s definitely a recipe for success. Also, DC and Warner Bros. definitely have a five, or so, year plan when it comes to the DC Cinematic Universe and although Man of Steel had it’s problems, it was overall a very solid movie. Given the weight of the Batman/Superman movie, though, I think it would behoove Warner Bros. and DC to allow Ben Affleck to help write some of the script, especially Batman’s scenes.
The public obviously has doubts as to whether Affleck can pull of the Caped Crusader, but he is definitely a talented actor and his screenplay far outshines his acting talents. If Affleck is allowed to write his own material and really become the man that is Batman and Bruce Wayne, then I think we will see a stellar performance from the man. Goyer did say that they were further along with the movie than most people think, although I think that many figured that considering it was set to release just two years after Man of Steel, so we don’t know how much of the script has already been written.
At the end of the video, when asked who ultimately win in battle, Batman or Superman, Goyer says that most hardcore fans would say Batman because he is the ultimate strategist, but he believes Superman could easily defeat the Dark Knight.
