Reviewer’s Word – Superman Unbound

If you’ve followed Word of the Nerd for very long you’ve probably picked up that I am a huge fan of DC’s line of animated films.  Although I have been critical of some, as a whole the entire line of films have set a standard in comic book adaptations that is hard to surpass.  It has been often said by many of the writers here that if Warner Bros. could put that kind of quality film making into their live action comic book movies, they would be beating Marvel Entertainment by leaps and bounds.  Sadly, that’s not how it is and the true upside is that twice a year we are treated to at least two new animated films from DC.  So now that that is out of the way, let’s get to the real meat and potatoes of this review.

As a rule so far, the Superman films have not been my favorites, with the exception of All Star Superman, I found them to be lacking quite a bit.  It seems that only when paired with Batman or teamed up with the Justice League does Superman really have a chance to shine.  There is a new exception to that…Superman Unbound.  Although far from perfect, Superman Unbound does score quite high on my personal list of best DC animated films.  And even though I was not a fan of the animation style I saw in the trailer, it did not matter to me in the end.

The story was based on a 2008 story arc written by Geoff Johns; Superman: Brainiac.  If you are a fan of DC Comics, you know that Johns can tell a story and it comes through perfectly.  The script written by Bob Goodman adapts Johns’ original story quite nicely particularly the portrayal of Brainiac, voiced by Fringe star John Noble.  Animated to look almost Borg-like in appearance, along with Noble’s voice acting, the character of Brainiac was truly sinister and frightening, a true match for Superman and a far departure from the Brainiac we’ve seen in Superman The Animated Series, Justice League and Justice League Unlimited.  The cold and calculating machine is replaced with a fearsome human quality that Noble performs perfectly.

Aside from John Noble the other voice talent in this film, which the producers have a knack of bringing a unique list of talent to all of the films, is surprisingly well done.  Matt Bomer (White Collar) and Stana Katic (Castle) do justice to the characters of Clark Kent/Superman and Lois Lane.  Although I was not all that pleased with the appearance of Lois Lane.  Though she was voiced beautifully by Katic, her look reminded me of a woman trying to look much younger than she is.  Whether intentional or not, the psuedo-goth look Lois was sporting wasn’t at all like Lois Lane, but more like The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.  For me it was Molly Quinn‘s (Castle) portrayal of Kara Zor-El/Supergirl that was really excellent in the film.  For that matter, Supergirl’s entire presence made me enjoy this film so much.

Quinn’s Supergirl was neither as shy nor as innocent as you would think her to be.  Supergirl takes on the role of badass superhero and a darker shadow to her cousin Superman quite well.  Her introduction in the opening sequence of the film was pure magic and actually had me talking to the screen more than once.  I know for certain that I let slip a “oh no, now you’re in for it” when the bad guys try to flee from a determined Supergirl.  A teenage girl with angst and superpowers is not to be trifled with.

Overall this was another feather in the cap of DC and Warner Bros.  I was skeptical at first due to my disappointment in past solo Superman films, but I found myself enjoying it immensely and would definitely recommend it to the uninitiated.  In writing this review I realized that Superman Unbound is the 16th in the series of stand alone films with hopefully no end in sight anytime soon.  Additional voice talent includes Frances Conroy, Wade Williams, Diedrich Bader, Stephen Root and Alexander Gould.

The Nerd gives Superman Unbound – 4 out of 5

Geoff Johns Reflects on Final Green Lantern

New York Times best-selling writer Geoff Johns opens up about his final issue of Green Lantern. Beginning with 2004′s Green Lantern: Rebirth, Johns has been the custodian of the adventures of Hal Jordan for nearly a decade and recently introduced novice GL, Simon Baz, to a new generation of readers.

Green Lantern #20 cover

The full cover art for Green Lantern #20.

Johns, along with artist Ethan Van Sciver, had been instrumental in reintroducing the Silver Age version of the classic superhero to the DC Universe, to much success and critical acclaim, as well as contributing much to the modern-day mythos, such as the various color spectrums and the respective members of their corps.

The special deluxe size issue, Green Lantern #20, will bring Johns’ tenure to a close, featuring an epic 66-page story, which will include 55 pages of art by current artist, Doug Mahnke, and special guest appearances from superstar artists Ethan Van Sciver, Ivan Reis, Patrick Gleason, Cully Hamner, Aaron Kuder, and Jerry Ordway, among others. Rumor is, the final four pages will also hold a few surprises, in classic Johns fashion.

Here’s what Johns had to say about his final issue:

“I’m extremely grateful for being able to conclude our run on Green Lantern with this monster of an issue. I’m moving on, feeling very proud of what my creative collaborators and I have done over the years with the Green Lantern universe. Thanks to all the readers out there who’ve been with us for this adventure. I can’t wait until #20 is in your hands — the last several pages in particular.”

The issue will also include a special retrospective by Johns, himself, as he takes the readers on a journey through his run from the last nine years. Take a look at the special sneak preview below and be sure to pick up this important issue when it hits the stands and digital platforms on May 22nd!

Who’s Your Baddie?: DC Announces Villain Documentary

DC-Super-Villains-Poster10yThey say your hero can only be as good as his villain. In the nearly 80 years that DC Comics has been in existence, they have given us many of the most infamous bad guys in comics. Superman needs to fight against the machinations of Lex Luthor. Batman needs to stop the insane rampages of the Joker. Green Lantern and Sinestro must clash, Flash must out race his rogues, Wonder Woman has to take on the gods of myth, and Aquaman needs to stop Black Manta. And as the Justice League, they need to stop Darkseid from taking over the cosmos with the Anti-Life Equation. They are the ones we love to hate. We cheer against the fiends as our heroes take them on. Yet we can’t help but admire DC’s biggest crooks and maniacs as they are dragged into Stryker’s or Arkham.

On Tuesday, DC Entertainment announced that production will begin, to coincide with WonderCon in Anaheim, on a documentary on our favorite rogues, maniacs, mad scientists, thieves and would be universal conquerors.

The press release:

“Behind every great hero, there are a whole lot of villains.” – Geoff Johns

NEW DOCUMENTARY NECESSARY EVIL: VILLAINS OF DC COMICS
LEGENDARY VILLAIN CHRISTOPHER LEE NARRATES

BURBANK, CA (March 26, 2013) – The Joker, Bane, Deathstroke, Darkseid and Lex Luthor – the scariest and most menacing villains in DC Comics’ universe — take center stage in a brand new full-length documentary from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment (WBHE) and DC Entertainment (DCE). The joint announcement was made today by WBHE and DCE.

Christopher Lee, who has played the villain more times than almost any other actor, will provide his unique voice as narrator. His roles in more than 200 films include star turns as Dracula, the Mummy and Frankenstein’s monster in Hammer horror classics, Count Dooku in Star Wars, and Saruman in The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit films.

In this new documentary film, the malevolent, sometimes charismatic figures from DC Comics’ hallowed rogues’ gallery will be explored in depth, featuring interviews with the famed creators, storytellers and those who have crafted the personalities and profiles of many of the most notorious villains in comic book history.

Production begins March 30, to coincide with WonderCon at the Anaheim Convention Center March 29-31.

Noted Geoff Johns, best-selling author and DCE’s Chief Creative Officer, “DC Comics is known for many things, but chief among them is the compelling, diverse and legendary society of super-villains who populate its universe. From the monstrous Solomon Grundy to the brutal Black Adam to the charismatic Sinestro, there is no single greater collection of villainy in all of fiction. These villains are hugely popular comic book characters in their own right and, quite honestly, many are often times more popular than some of our iconic super heroes.”

Jeff Baker, WBHE’s Executive Vice President and General Manager, Theatrical Catalog, added “The DC brand is enjoying a huge resurgence thanks to the entire leadership team at DC Entertainment which is driving opportunities not only for new theatrical properties, but for brand extensions as well. This new documentary will reinforce this evolving strategy and leverage DC assets across the entire studio landscape.”

Johns also reiterated that this year’s initiative will be a turning point for DCE. “It’s time we deconstruct these complex and sinister antagonists and celebrate the role they play as the engine and energy of some of the greatest storytelling in comics. 2013 is the Year of the Villain at DC Comics.”

On Saturday, March 30th, fans attending WonderCon are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite DC Comics’ villain for an opportunity to be featured in the documentary Fans can join DCE at WonderCon at booth 801 with filming to take place Saturday from 10:30am – Noon. To find out more about where and what time to meet in the WonderCon DC Entertainment booth, keep checking the DC Comics Facebook (Facebook.com/DCComics) and Twitter sites (@DCComics).

Participation in upcoming ‘cons’ (Comic-Con International: San Diego and New York Comic Con) is anticipated, with a full release scheduled for later in the year.

Can I say how AWESOME this is? It’s always fascinating to get a deeper look at our favorite heroes. Past documentaries such as It’s A Bird, It’s A Plane, It’s Superman and various History Channel specials delved deep into our favorite heroes. Now, it’s the time that the villains get their devious due.

And it’s narrated by Sir Christopher Lee, a man who has made a career at being terrifying villains. His presence gives the documentary a bit more gravitas, which will be an interesting counterpoint to the often colorful villains populating the DC Universe.

I’m hoping that there will be interviews with those who have performed as our favorite villains. Actors such as Mark Hamill (Joker), Clancy Brown (Lex Luthor), David Warner (Ra’s Al Ghul), Malcolm McDowell (Metallo), Terence Stamp (Zod) and others could give amazing insight into their characters and how they decided to portray them in the way they did (plus the idea of Count Dooku interviewing Luke Skywalker makes this nerd grin widely).

While this is a documentary in development, I’m eagerly awaiting for it. It’s time that the bad guys have their moment.

Comics Portal: Are Green Lantern’s Best Days Behind Him?

GL

A couple of weeks back, I talked about Geoff Johns leaving Green Lantern after nine great years on the title.

Looks like he’s taking the current creative teams in the GL family with him.

DCComics.com told fans about just who would be working on the individual books in a recent story:

  • Green Lantern will be written by Robert Venditti with art by Billy Tan (who drew the above illustration)
  • Green Lantern Corps is to be written by Josh Fialkov with art by Bernard Chang
  • Green Lantern: New Guardians will be written by Justin Jordan with art by Brad Walker
  • Josh Fialkov will write Red Lanterns with art by Alessandro Vitti
  • Larfleeze will be written by Keith Giffen with art by Scott Kolins

I would have rather had most of the current folks stick around, or even perhaps change titles. But it apparently seemed like a good time for the entire bunch to move on to other projects.

I’m sad about that.

Of course, new people can infuse new blood and enthusiasm into a comic, so that’s the positive way to look at it.

But it’s been much more likely the case over time that when a successful team moves on, the people who come in aren’t quite as good as the people who upgraded the books. In my experience, the new folks go down a peg. When they don’t do as well, they leave soon after, and another creative team comes on, and they don’t measure up as well either.

Before long, the company is wondering if it’s time to cancel those comics.

And poor Green Lantern hasn’t had a lot of success compared to Batman or Superman, even in movies or TV.

DC Comics, Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, Geoff Johns, Wayne Hall, Filmation, Superman, Batman, Justice League of AmericaThe Green Lantern motion picture doesn’t appear to have a sequel coming anytime in the future. (I happened to like that movie, by the way.) Also, we recently found out that Cartoon Network was not going to renew Green Lantern: The Animated Series, a show I passionately love!

Old GL hasn’t been given the spotlight much in his history. He had stories in the Superman/Aquaman Hour of Adventure by Filmation back in the day, and was even in the “Justice League of America” segments that appeared. But he wasn’t in the original Super Friends, appearing only occasionally as the series progressed.

He has appeared in the direct-to-DVD animated films from DC/Warner Bros. with some success, but there’s no indication of a GL cartoon coming from them anytime soon, either. I guess Nathan Fillon will have to keep on keeping on Castle for ABC.

I’d hate to see all this quality fizzle out on us. We need other DC heroes appearing in movies and television. With computer graphics as advanced as they are now, Hal Jordan is a perfect choice.

I’ll give the new creators their fair shot, just as I have the entire “New 52.” I just hope they build on what Johns has created, and take us places even he couldn’t imagine, and do that well!

DC Comics And Beyond – Justice League of America #1

JLA1cover

Okay, I didn’t buy all those covers, but I did enjoy another jewel in the “Justice League” crown at DC!

Here’s the description for Justice League of America #1: “The march toward TRINITY WAR begins with part one of ‘WORLD’S MOST DANGEROUS!’ Green Lantern! Green Arrow! Catwoman! Katana! Vibe! Hawkman! Stargirl! They aren’t the world’s greatest super heroes—they’re the most dangerous! But why does a team like the JLA need to exist? What is their ultimate mission? And who is pulling the strings? Plus: Find out why Martian Manhunter is the most dangerous of them all. Period.”

Mentioned in this week’s 5 Comics not to Miss column, this book adds a new focus to the already successful Justice League and Justice League Dark titles. (Can there be a huge crossover in all three books far away?)

Geoff Johns does his usual superlative job of setting up what’s happening, and David Finch’s art is strong and powerful, working well with the script.

There are a couple of characters in the book that I’ve long liked, including Hawkman, Green Arrow, Green Lantern (Simon Baz), and Stargirl. Mr. Johns has already worked wonders with three of the four, so it’s nice to see him telling stories with them again. And the Martian Manhunter deserves to be back in a League, so I’m happy to see that!

How is Justice League of America different from the other Leagues? Well, this group is intended to be a more “public” team, unlike the others, who have their own, more private ways of doing things. Steve Trevor is involved, and people keep flaunting Superman’s new relationship with Wonder Woman in his face, which is something interesting to see. How long can he stand people doing that to him?

Also, Katana and Hawkman are clearly identified as killers, but ones who can be useful to the team. How can that take place? I have to see how they do that!

The member that gives me pause is Vibe. I understand the desire to have a diverse group, but I still cringe when I see his “superhero shorts” on DC Nation. I’m anxious to pick up his special, which was sold out at the store I visited.

Still, Justice League of America is off to a dynamic start.

NTW_Cv17This Week’s “New 52” Reviews: Justice League #17 features the conclusion to the “Throne of Atlantis” event. Nightwing and Red Hood and the Outlaws show us the aftermath to the “Death of the Family.” Batwoman’s team up with Wonder Woman concludes this time. Wonder Woman’s regular comic has the amazon, War and Orion joining forces to save Zola’s baby from Hermes. Green Lantern, Green Lantern Corps and Green Lantern: New Guardians begin the “Wrath of the First Lantern” event. Catwoman starts a new crime spree. Birds of Prey has the team adding its first male member. Action Comics #17 has one of the last Grant Morrison stories. Next, I enjoyed DC Universe, which features a story about Arsenal. This book has been cancelled, so only a few more issues to go. Legion of Super-Heroes features the Fatal Five. Supergirl #17 provides more of the “H’El on Earth” story but doesn’t conclude it. Sword of Sorcery #5 also approaches its abrupt demise. Justice League of America’s Vibe #1 is co-written by Geoff Johns, so that’s good news!

5 Comics Not to Miss This Week

The Avengers go sci-fi, the Justice League expands its ranks, and Wonder Woman’s Shakespearean family drama keeps on trucking in this week’s 5 Comics Not to Miss!

dec120632AVENGERS #6

Jonathan Hickman’s interesting sci-fi take on Marvel’s Mightiest superteam continues. So far, his plots seem to be as much about science fiction concepts as they are about superheroes fighting supervillains, which is a unique tone for the Avengers. This week’s issue promises an exploration of the Captain Universe origin, which should be interesting under Hickman’s pen, as he seems poised to give an often underutilized, minor Marvel character an upgrade in relevance.

dec120174JUSTICE LEAGUE #17

The conclusion to the entertaining “Throne of Atlantis” storyline comes this week. Geoff Johns’ writing on the series has really taken off with this latest tale as he simultaneously reinvigorates Aquaman’s underwater world while he puts the League in the middle of a stunning adventure that changes the dynamic of the team and expands it as well. The Atlantis-surface conflict has prompted the government to grow the League’s ranks, which leads into this week’s debut issue of the new Justice League of America #1 spin-off.

dec120189JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #1

This is it! The much-anticipated expansion of the Justice League, the Justice League of America. This book comes as a direct result of “Throne of Atlantis,” and the friction between this new team and the other Justice League is probably what starts the also much-anticipated “Trinity War” storyline, the New 52′s first big crossover event. This new Justice League stars Wonder Woman’s spurned ex-lover Steve Trevor and the Martian Manhunter, a character who, in the relaunch, has fought against the League in the past. It’s probably safe to say that the two Leagues won’t be friends initially, and the drama will probably make for great storytelling.

dec120240JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA’S VIBE #1

Yes, I put a Vibe comic in here, dammit! Can the New 52 version of this often misunderstood character from the Justice League’s vastly underrated Detroit era (yeah, I said that too, and meant it) pick up enough readers to keep his own solo series going? We’ll see. The DC Universe’s creative architects, including the extremely talented Geoff Johns, have rebooted Vibe from a 1980s breakdancing stereotype (although a likeable 1980s breakdancing stereotype) and are attempting to make him more modern and relevant for today’s audience. His vibrational powers are supposedly linked to the frequencies between dimensions (think Earth 1 and Earth 2 and all those others). Let’s see if Vibe 2.0 can take off in ways Vibe 1.0 never did.

dec120244WONDER WOMAN #17

Wonder Woman’s been a consistently good read, thanks to Brian Azzarello’s writing and Cliff Chiang’s and Tony Akins’s art. Issue #17 continues the series’ second story arc, which brings the popular New God Orion to the New 52 DC Universe just in time to mix it up with the Greek gods and all of this epic lost-child-prophecy type stuff that’s been going on in Wonder Woman’s book over the past several months. Check out this title is you’re looking for Shakespearean family drama with some cosmic, otherworldly stuff thrown in.

Comics Portal: Geoff Johns Leaving Green Lantern

DC Comics, Green Lantern, Sinestro, Hal Jordan, Geoff Johns, Wayne Hall, Kyle Rayner, Black Lantern, Black Hand

It’s been nine wonderful years for me and other fans of Green Lantern, but now comes word that DC Comics’ Chief Creative Officer, Geoff Johns, is leaving Green Lantern behind. It’s the latest shift in writers since “The New 52″ began a year and a half ago.

“I’m really proud of all the stuff we’ve built with Green Lantern — from Larfleeze to the different corps,” Johns told The Associated Press about his decision. “The universe has expanded and will live well past my run. It was more than just telling another story, but really giving back to the character by expanding and adding to their mythology.”

Folks may remember that Green Lantern had gone through a tough time, with sales falling significantly. Johns’ return (and HIS bringing back Hal Jordan as the main ring wielder) ushered in an era that saw all kinds of expansions and developments regarding power rings of all colors as well as the Guardians.

So, with all this success, why leave GL now?

“I was getting to an end point and a story line that made sense for me,” Johns said. “I felt like it was time to close my run and focus all my energies on the Justice League corner of the DC Universe. It was a very, very hard decision. I absolutely love these characters but I felt like I had a story line that really made sense and felt emotionally satisfying and felt very big and very epic.”

For now, Johns will continue on Justice League, Justice League of America and Aquaman.

However, Johns will go out on Green Lantern with a bang. Issue #20 will be 64 pages long, and will be drawn by Doug Mahnke. Check out the cover above!

“It really, for me, ties everything else and ends the Green Lantern saga,” Johns said. “This story — the way the story evolves — I think people will get a sense of finality from it.”

DC Comics, Green Lantern, Sinestro, Hal Jordan, Geoff Johns, Wayne Hall, Kyle Rayner, Black Lantern, Black HandAs I think back over the last decade or so, a lot of powerful stories jump to mind, such as the “Sinestro Corps War.” But the one that will always stand out to me was the Blackest Night event, which included Black Hand committing suicide so he could be part of the Black Lantern Corps. I remember my jaw hitting the ground when I saw that. And it was only the beginning of that astounding experience.

But Johns will likely be remembered for expanding the GL “universe” from Kyle Rayner being the one and only Green Lantern to literally a whole rainbow of ring corps, each with their own oath to recharge their rings.

I’m hoping maybe Peter Tomasi will take over the writing of Green Lantern. He’s been doing a great job elsewhere in the Lantern family of comics, so I’m thinking he’s the perfect one to pick up the main title in this group.

And I’ll keep supporting Mr. Johns’ excellent stories wherever else they appear, including the upcoming Justice League of America (although I’ll pass on the multiple covers)!

DC Comics And Beyond – Throne of Atlantis, Chapters One and Two

DC Comics, New 52, Wayne Hall, Justice League, Aquaman, Geoff Johns, Ivan Reis, Superman, Wonder Woman

It was likely very easy to buy everything that came out this week since there weren’t that many titles released during the fifth week of the month. But two of this week’s releases kicked off the “Throne of Atlantis” crossover event by Geoff Johns.

Here’s the first chapter’s description, in Justice League #15: “Can the Justice League band together to battle the forces of Atlantis?  And in the backup feature, Shazam comes face to face with Black Adam, and Billy makes a decision that will shock his friends!” The second chapter’s, in Aquaman #15, goes like this: “Atlantis invades the surface world!”

Johns has proven over the years that he’s a master at weaving stories through multiple books, and he’s off to a running start with these two issues, the only New 52 titles of the week.

As a big Batman fan, the portions of these issues that stood out were seeing the Dark Knight interact with Aquaman, something we’ve rarely seen. It will come as no surprise that the two don’t always get along, with Batman constantly probing Arthur to reveal his secrets. This is ironic because Aquaman wanted the League to be open with each other.

DC Comics, New 52, Wayne Hall, Justice League, Aquaman, Geoff Johns, Ivan Reis, Superman, Wonder WomanElsewhere, Superman shows Wonder Woman, his new girlfriend, what it means to have a secret identity, and we see Lois’ reaction to the superheroes being out together. I wasn’t sure the Superman and Wonder Woman relationship would be interesting, but these scenes were intriguing.

I enjoyed Atlantis’ war on the surface world. It’s interesting because not all the characters are who’s allied with whom.

I also have to say that I love Ivan Reis’ art on Justice League. He’s the perfect person to take the reins of the book from Jim Lee. He can do everything from single panels to double-page spreads with the best of them, so I’m looking forward to upcoming issues.

The future installments of “Throne of Atlantis” can’t be released fast enough!

I should also comment on Amazing Spider-Man #700, the most expensive release this week, and its contents are likely the worst-kept secret in comics history. Rather than elaborate (and give spoilers), I’ll say that the significant story that takes place here reminds me of the Winter Soldier tale in Captain America. Things will get back to normal. The only question is, how long will that take? (I’m betting within two years.)

Also out this week are:

5 Comics Not to Miss This Week

Iron Man gets a relaunch, the X-Men and Avengers reap what they’ve sown, and DC’s supernatural and cosmic universes keep getting weirder and weirder in this week’s 5 Comics Not to Miss.

Iron Man #1

It’ll be interesting to see what the MarvelNOW! relaunch will be for one of the company’s most famous characters. Thanks to the Marvel Studios and Avengers zeitgeist, Iron Man’s hotter than ever, so the company is probably going to make sure his comic book is extremely well-written and riveting, in order to do the character justice (or at least, I’d hope they would). This debut issue is probably worth a look just to see what the company has plan for Tony Stark, a man who has become a household name.

AvX Consequences #5

This is the last issue of a miniseries that caps off Marvel’s biggest crossover in recent memory, so issue #5 is valuable just to see where the Marvel Universe will take some of the biggest players from Avengers vs. X-Men next. Marvel is changing a lot with their character relationships and the tone of the stories. This issue is a great way to learn how that may play out.

Green Lantern #14

The “Rise of the Third Army” storyline makes this an interesting time for Green Lantern fans, and Geoff Johns has been writing the hell out of it. His introduction of the new lantern, Simon Baz, in the midst of a tumultuous time for his fellow lanterns and the Guardians is enthralling. In this issue, Baz fights the Justice League in what may be an exciting, action-packed entry in DC’s latest cosmic saga.

Animal Man #14

You should be reading Animal Man  if you like superhero comics with a horror flavor. Animal Man fights supervillains like other folks in costumes do, but the tone of his adventures is very dark and often gruesome and strange. This issue is part of the “Rotworld” crossover that explains the nature of his powers and how they fit into the larger supernatural sphere of the DC Universe, so if you’re curious about the overall mythology and you also like your comics with an edge, this one may be for you.

Swamp Thing #14

Swamp Thing is another superhero comic with horror overtones, and it crosses over with Animal Man  right now, thanks to “Rotworld.” But although Swamp Thing and Animal Man have much in common, Swamp Thing is the more famous character, and the reason for that is because the tone of his universe is so well-defined and easy to get, even if supernatural, scary, fatalistic storylines aren’t your thing. But if they are, read an issue of Swamp Thing this week.

The Week in New York Comic-Con: 10/11/12 – 10/14/12

New York Comic-Con was the highlight of the week, and attention-getting announcements came aplenty.

Highlights from the Big Two include:

Marvel

  • January’s new Superior Spider-Man series WON’T feature Peter Parker, but whoever’s going to wear that mask is locking lips with a startled Mary Jane in a cover for issue #2. This new Spidey is supposed to be darker and more aggressive, which hasn’t sat well with a lot of folks on the Comic Book Movie comments board
  • A new Secret Avengers #1 comic is due February, by writer Nick Spencer and artist Luke Ross. This team of undercover Avengers has parallels with the movie version. Members include Hawkeye and Black Widow, and Agent Coulson and a very Sam Jackson-looking Nick Fury will appear
  • Brian Michael Bendis and Steve McNiven are relaunching a new Guardians of the Galaxy series in February, with Iron Man as a member
  • Black Widow’s past comes back to haunt her in Avengers Assemble #12 & #13 in November

DC

  • The next turning points in the “Rise of the Third Army” Green Lantern storyline sees Guy Gardner teaming up with new Lantern Simon Baz, who seemed well-received by the con audience
  • Scott Snyder and Jim Lee will launch a new Superman book next year
  • Artist Paul Pelletier will begin penciling Aquaman with February’s issue #15
  • In New 52 news, fans clamoring for the returns of Cassandra Cain and Stephanie Brown were urged to “keep reading”
  • The upcoming Justice League of America series will make Martian Manhunter the most dangerous DC superhero, according to series writer Geoff Johns

Geoff Johns to Write Episode of CW’s Arrow

The new CW show  Arrow  has been building excitement since it was announced. Now they have yet another feather in their cap. It has been announced that episode 107 of the series will be written by a team of writers including superstar of the comic world Geoff Johns. Johns is DC Entertainment’s Chief Creative Office and writer on legendary comic books such Superman, Green Lantern and The Flash just to name a few. Also writing on the episode will be fellow comic writer Marc Guggenheim who has worked on The Punisher, Aquaman and also The Flash. Andrew Kreisberg is the third member of the team and also boasts some impressive credits having worked Justice League, Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Warehouse 13 TV series.

The title of the episode will be “Muse on Fire”. While we do not yet know what the plot of the episode will be, but Johns has said the we can expect to see the Huntress. The Huntress is a popular character and is just one of many who have been confirmed to be a part of the show. Stephen Amell takes on the role of the Green Arrow, Oliver Queen while Australian actress Jessica De Gouw will play the Huntress. Yesterday it was announced that Battlestar Galactica alum Tahmo Penikett will guest star as the Huntress’s father’s right hand man.  A comprehensive list of confirmed characters can found here. Given all the characters that will be a part of the series and all the talent behind creating it The show is bound to be a success. Johns is as just as enthusiastic about writing the episode as we, the fans, are to see it.

New Creative Team For The Justice League

Since the release of DCs New 52 The Justice League books have been on top form. Starting with the heroes being hunted and vilified as vigilantes only to bring them in to the hearts of the people they protect as they save the world it’s been a non-stop action thrill ride that has looked amazing.

In December issue #15 is released featuring new art from Ivan Reis and Joe Prado as Jim Lee steps down to work on his next big venture with DC. Geoff Johns, current writer on The Justice League said this about the change:-

There is no other choice for the next A-Star art team on JUSTICE LEAGUE. Ivan Reis and Joe Prado bring power, grace, emotion and epic storytelling worthy of the world’s greatest super heroes. From GREEN LANTERN to BLACKEST NIGHT to AQUAMAN, I couldn’t ask for better collaborators. The second year of JUSTICE LEAGUE will begin an adventurous, mysterious and heroic storyline focusing on our members as their greatest secrets are revealed…and the repercussions change the world. Ivan and Joe begin with a story they were born to draw — THRONE OF ATLANTIS — a story between JUSTICE LEAGUE and AQUAMAN that will have the League experiencing what Aquaman does — they’ll be caught between land and sea. With new relationships developing – like Wonder Woman and Superman – new members coming on – like Shazam! and the all-new Atom — and new threats rising — like Ocean Master & Atlantis — the Justice League will grow and change as we march towards the impending TRINITY WAR.

For a little look at what’s to come here is The Justice League #15 cover:-

As for what Jim Lee is getting up to next more is set to be announced at NYCC, so as soon as we know, you will!!

Review – Aquaman #12

As I said in my Twitter review already, this issue is action, action and more action as Aquaman and his former teammates race to rescue Dr. Shinn and stop Black Manta from getting his hands on an Atlantean artifact of tremendous power.  Manta aims to get rid of Aquaman once and for all…but Mera might have something to say about that.  As the battle rages, one hero makes the ultimate sacrifice to stop Black Manta.

I have to give it to Geoff Johns, he sure can spin a wonderful and exciting tale.  His work on Aquaman to date has been stellar and this story arc entitled The Others is probably his best work yet.  Teamed with Ivan Reis and Joe Prado to do the art, Aquaman is probably one of the best all-around titles in the New 52.

I’ve had nothing but praise for Aquaman since the first issue and I will be severely disappointed if the rumors of the team of Johns, Reis and Prado breaking up turn out to be true.  This is truly the “dream team” of comic book creators for DC and it would be stupid to pull them off this title.

That being said, I will say that I am sad we have to wait two months for the conclusion of this arc but we will get the much coveted #0 issue next month.   I feel that out of all the books in the New 52, Aquaman needed the least amount of back-story that the #0 issues are suppose to provide.  The first issue started perfectly and quickly established the characters.  Back-story has been provided here and there throughout the series as flashbacks in Aquaman’s past.  Needless to say, I am eager to get my hands on the #0 issue next month.

“This is finally the end of Aquaman.  The seventh relic holds the secret to Aquaman’s past.  It holds the secret to his ultimate destruction.  The destruction of everything he loves and everything he thinks he is.  I’ll drown him in misery.”

It just occurred to me that this has gone from a review of issue #12 to a horn tooting buildup for the #0 issue and that really wasn’t my intention.  With the exception of a couple of issues, Aquaman has been rock solid every month and a joy to read.  Artwork by Reis and Prado has been some of the best in comics.  In this latest issue, the page 2 image of Mera along with the final page image of a distraught and angered Aquaman is nothing short of spectacular.

Geoff Johns use of Black Manta as the villain was a welcomed choice (at least for me).  I’ve always loved Black Manta since way back in the days of Challenge of the Superfriends on Saturday mornings.  It is always said that a hero is generally defined by the villain.  Black Manta is delightfully wicked and just one of those villains you love to hate.

The Others concludes in Aquaman #13 and we can look forward to the #0 issue next month.

Justice League International Annual #1

fl-justice-leagueBy now anyone who’s bothered to look, or in to comics in any way, will have seen the amazing Justice League #12 cover. In case you haven’t, here it is >>>

That’s right, Superman and Wonder Woman getting off with one another! If that wasn’t enough, the issue is the last of a story arch, The Villains Journey, and we are being told that, ‘A shocking last page will have the world talking about this issue!’

Pretty large I think you’ll agree. So, what’s next?

Thankfully the guys at DC aren’t keeping us waiting too long. Following straight on from the events in Justice League #12, and released on the same day, is Justice League International Annual #1 an oversized issue to continue the story. Now, I could drone on about how good this book is going to be or what might happen or I could just leave it to the guys who made it to gee you up.

JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL ANNUAL #1 sets the stage for some major changes in the JUSTICE LEAGUE universe. Obviously, it’s the last issue of the series, but certainly not the last story for any of the members – especially Booster Gold who ultimately will once again be drawn into the centre of the DC Universe as the events of JUSTICE LEAGUE #12 start to change the course of the future.

Co-writer Geoff Johns.

I had a great time working with Geoff on this issue, especially one as important as this. It brings an end to certain stories and launches several characters into new and exciting directions.

Dan DiDio, other Co-writer.

JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL ANNUAL #1 introduces two new members, Olympian and Blue Beetle, who join just in time for the team to implode. Several established players quit and not everyone will survive. All this, plus a shocking glimpse into the future of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52.

Editor Brian Smith. (I do enjoy the way these guys SHOUT THEIR TITLES)

Justice League International Annual #1, Co-written by Geoff Johns and Dan DiDio and illustrated by Jason Fabok, is out this Wednesday, August 29th.

Here’s a sneak peek to keep you going.

Successful Aquaman Creative Team Leaving the Title?

As much as I dislike the new 52′s approach to Aquaman, I have to admit it works. By taking the character away from his 90s persona and transforming him into an approachable do-gooder, it makes the character more relateable. It also allows for some practical demonstrations of his powers when confronted by idiotic questions from onlookers. This change in Aquaman was made possible by writer Geoff Johns and artist Ivan Reis.

Now, DC Comics may torpedo any potential success by yanking the creative team off the comic. After issue 16, scheduled for a January 2013 release, Ivan Reis might take over Justice League from a departing Jim Lee. Geoff Johns might follow suit and abandon Aquaman.

There are a number of possible reasons for doing this. He’s overworked is a possible one. Johns is currently writing Justice League, Green Lantern, and Aquaman. He is also Creative Director for DC. That might be too much for him to do and still maintain quality. He’s already done everything he needs to with the character is another. He’s done it before. After writing Booster Gold for 12 or so issues, he passed it onto someone else.

The most likely one, however, is a company wide circumstance. There are rumors suggesting that DC may be switching creative teams around after issue 16 as a way to get fresh ideas and new creative directions for all established comics.

While this sounds like a good idea on paper, it can also derail long term plans for characters and storylines. A lot of writers tend to think long term and have a clear idea where they want the characters to be in 15, 20, or even 30 issues down the road.  Changing the creative teams around might disrupt the flow of the story and alienate fans.  That can lead to disaster.

New Green Lantern’s Name Revealed

The solicitation for the DC New 52 title Green Lantern #13 has revealed the news that we’ve been anxiously waiting for: the name of Earth’s newest Lantern! We’ve seen pictures and hints of him here and there, but now we finally have a name, as well as an image, featuring the newest Green Lantern in full regalia.

With Geoff Johns on at the writing desk, Doug Mahnke on interior artwork and Ivan Reis and Joe Prado on cover artwork, the name of the newest Green Lantern has been revealed in the story arc entitled, “Rise Of The Third Army”.

“Baz, Earth’s NEW Green Lantern, battles The Justice League! Meanwhile, The Guardians begin their final step in the destruction of the Lanterns by releasing the first of the Third Army Soldiers!”

Baz, the new Green Lantern of Earth. While many of you won’t find his name all that funny, over here in the UK, ‘Baz’, is quite typically short for ‘Barry’, which has to be the most unthreatening name in the multiverse. But, time will soon tell whether Baz will live up to his name or not, but you have to admit, the artwork is pretty awesome and he looks badass.

So what do you think to the new Green Lantern? Will he live up to the previous Green Lantern’s legacy? How do you think the Lanterns will fare against the Third Army Soldiers? How will Baz fare against the strength of The Justice League? Let s know in the comment section below!

The newest Green Lantern, Baz.

20120720-072244.jpgNUMBER FOUR

The Goon #40
By Eric Powell
Published by Dark Horse Comics

In This Issue…

Back in his teenage days when Prohibition was going on, Goon used to hot-rod moonshine past the law for fun and profit. That is, until he ran into a gang of gearhead rockabilly ghouls out for blood!

Reason for this pick:

As a comic book reviewer, you get to see publisher’s comics before they come out… What I’m trying to say, is that I’ve read it already and it’s well worth picking up. Scout’s honor.

20120720-072202.jpgNUMBER THREE

By Daniel Way, Salvador Espin and Dave Johnson
Published by Marvel Comics

In This Issue…

Part one of ‘BLACKLISTED!’ Deadpool vs. classic ‘Pool persecutor, BLACK BOX!

WILDCARD COMIC PICK

X-treme X-Men #1
By Greg Pak, Stephen Segovia and Julian Totino Tedesco
Published by Marvel Comics

In This Issue…

Spinning out of the pages of ASTONISHING X-MEN! Travel the multiverse with Captain Howlett, Kid Nightcrawler, and Emmeline Frost! Which X-Men will be lost between dimensions…with no guaranteed way home?

Reason for This Pick:

It looks like it could go either way with the launch of this new title, it seems interesting enough, but I’ve been wrong about titles before. I’m fairly confident in Greg Pak’s story telling ability, but not too sure what the demand for this title will be like. Buy it at your own peril!

TRADE, HARDCOVER OR GRAPHIC NOVEL OF THE WEEK

20120720-072218.jpgDaredevil by Mark Waid Vol.1 TPB
By Mark Waid and Paolo Rivera

Published by Marvel Comics

About the trade:

It’s a fresh start for the Man Without Fear, with the all-star creative team of writer Mark Waid (CAPTAIN AMERICA) and artists Paolo Rivera and Marcos Martin (AMAZING SPIDER-MAN) at the helm! Matt Murdock is back in New York, but not everyone is happy to see him. Hoping to resuscitate his law practice, he takes on a police-brutality case – but someone is trying to silence the victim. While Murdock struggles in court, Daredevil hits the streets as Klaw, master of sound, makes his deadly return! Then, the blind literally lead the blind as a visually impaired client targeted for assassination holds the key to a global conspiracy perpetrated by some familiar foes. Can Daredevil protect the young man long enough to bring down an international criminal organization, or will their deadly enforcer get to him first? Collecting DAREDEVIL (2011) #1-6.

Reason for this pick:

I bloody loved it. Waid has taken away all the grittiness and darkness from the character and what we’ve been left with is pure comic book gold. This trade collects the first six issues of a title I’ve sincerely enjoyed reading and continue to read. If you haven’t picked up a copy of Daredevil in a while, this is a great opportunity for you to get back into the man without fear. Super heroics at their finest, courtesy of the phenomenal writing of Mark Waid and the marvelous art of Paolo Rivera.

Although this article is complete speculation, it is grounded in strong evidence and therefore maybe considered slightly spoilery. If you consider character deaths in comics a spoiler then you may want to stop reading now.

I now strongly believe that come this September, a prominent character, one that was a huge success before the New 52 relaunch will be dead.

That character is Hal Jordan.

It all begins with the Green Lantern Annual #1 cover which is a mimic of the defining cover for the Death of Superman – the best selling book of all time.

When this cover was released, it was widely believed that one of the Green Lanterns would die, but even in the main book there are two big characters in Hal Jordan and Sinestro. However, with the announcement of the Rise of the Third Army, it seems more likely to now be Hal.

The above image is the main poster for the event, and features neither Hal or Sinestro, still throwing us off which will possibly die in the annual. But Geoff Johns may have given a little too much away on DC’s The Source.

He said about the book: “What happens to Guy Gardner when he’s targeted after Hal Jordan?” This strongly suggests to me that how will Guy survive if even Hal has bitten the proverbial bullet?

Again, this is speculation but all the pieces do fall nicely into place. It would seems a shame for Geoff to kill off a character which he brought to the forefront of DC and even brought back to life in Rebirth.

What do you think of all the evidence? Will DC kill off Hal?
