Two Skybound Titles Sell Out

Skybound Entertainment and Robert Kirkman announced that two of its titles have sold out and are getting second printings.

The first title is Guarding the Globe #1. It is the Justice League of the Invincible Universe, but reading it is more like the Suicide Squad. The first Global Guardians team had a very spectacular death. This is the second team to bear that name, out of necessity more than anything else.

Critics have reacted positively to the launch of the series, in which superheroes both familiar and new must team up to protect the Earth in Invincible’s absence.

“Hester shows no problem in striking that familiar Invincible tone. Though there’s a fair amount of violence on hand, there’s also a slightly goofy, playful quality to the conflicts that prevents the character drama from overwhelming the series.”
- IGN

“If Invincible is the best superhero comic in the universe, then Guarding the Globe will soon be in the running for “best team” book.”
- Mulltiversity Comics

“…a funny, intense, beautifully drawn comic that will have you hooked from page one.”
-Geekadelphia

The second title to sell out is Thief of Thieves #8. Not really a surprise because this series continues to sell out since issue 1. In this crime drama produced by Skybound continues to captivate and impress audiences. Currently, AMC is developing it into a television series.

The 2nd printings of both Guarding the Globe #1 and Thief of Thieves #8 will be available October 3rd along with the next issue of their series.

Guarding The Globe is a Full Time Job

Invincible, sworn protector of Earth, is occupied with the Viltrumite Wars and the world is in peril. Something needs to be done. Thank god for Phil Hester and Todd Nauck. For these brave souls are set to save us all.

Come September Skybound/Image Comics will be turning Robert Kirkman’s creation, Guarding The Globe, in to an on-going series, with Hester and Nauck at the helm. Originally a 6 issue miniseries in 2010, the Invincible spin-off is to be given a new lease of life. For readers new to the comics, Hester and Nauck say this is the perfect point to get involved.

“When Robert first approached me about this on-going series, I knew I wanted to be a part of Guarding The Globe.  I really respect what Robert’s accomplished so far with the series and I’m having a blast drawing this book,” said Todd Nauck, newly christened artist of the upcoming series. “I feel it’s my best work to date. It’s great to be working with Image Comics again!” Todd will be returning to the Image Comics fold after Image published his creator-owned series Wildgaurd.

While Phil Hester, fresh from a spell of writing for The Darkness comicbook series, is set to pen the series, taking over from creator Robert Kirkman, said: “When Robert floated the idea it didn’t take me very long to say yes. The characters in Guarding The Globe have the same kind of freshness Invincible does. It’s a great chance to both pay homage to super heroes and upend them a bit in a way that isn’t cynical, but humanizing.”

The new creative team seem very excited about the project and that should make for some exciting results. With a large, and successful back catalog, this pair of successful comic creators seem to be building up a good head of steam heading in to this new series and should make for an interesting September. Writer Phil Hester has such titles under his belt as Wonder Woman #605-614, Ultimate Marvel Team-Up #2-3 and The Darkness: Accursed. While Todd Nauck can boast such titles as Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man, Young Justice and his own creation, Wildguard.

“The Invincible Universe has outgrown its parent title and I’m very excited about being able to tell larger, more in-depth stories with some of the key players from that book in this series,” said creator Robert Kirkman, getting right behind the pair. “Phil Hester and Todd Nauck are well known to fans of superhero comics and I think people are fully aware that they’re going to knock this book out of the park.”

Kirkman himself is not resting on his heels. He is currently serving as creator/executive producer and writer on AMC’s The Walking Dead TV series, based on Kirkman’s own comic creation, and is about to get busier. AMC have just picked up another of Kirkman’s comic series, Thief of Thieves, and is turning it in to a series in which Kirkman will perform the same duties as on The Walking Dead series. Thief of Thieves has very large shoes to fill.
