Third Flavour of Cornetto Greenlit – The World’s End

Director Edgar Wright has long said that he would do three films with chums Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. He’s cheekily referred to the planned comedy trilogy as the “Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy” (or the “Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy”) after the frozen British ice cream treat that will appear in all three films.

The red strawberry Cornetto appeared in his first film, Shaun of the Dead, as red was a recurring theme, seen in all the zombie gore, the color of Shaun’s tie, and the great line, “You’ve got red on you.” The British buddy cop comedy Hot Fuzz featured the original blue Cornetto, a nod to the boys in blue themselves.

News comes today that the third film, The World’s End, has been greenlit (that’s a hint to the final ice cream right there). Way back in 2008, Wright confirmed that the third flavor flavour would be green: mint chocolate chip. Why green? The World’s End is going to be a sci fi flick.

20 years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hellbent on trying the drinking marathon again.  They are convinced to stage an encore by mate Gary King, a 40-year old man trapped at the cigarette end of his teens, who drags his reluctant pals to their hometown and once again attempts to reach the fabled pub – The World’s End.  As they attempt to reconcile the past and present, they realize the real struggle is for the future, not just theirs but humankind’s.  Reaching The World’s End is the least of their worries.

The film is currently in pre-production, and will star Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.
