HBO Premiere Date for Season 5 True Blood

Where's Alcide, guys?

HBO has officially announced the season five premiere for True Blood. Mark your calendars for Sunday, June 10 at 9pm EST.  This will be Alan Ball’s last season with the show, though he will stay on in an advisory role. Also of note, Christopher Meloni of Law and Order: SVU fame was officially confirmed to be joining the cast as a powerful vampire who “holds Bill and Eric’s fate in his hands”.  Meloni played very well as the intense, could snap at any moment character of Elliot Stabler on SVU.  If he brings half  of that tension to True Blood,  viewers will be in for a treat.

From the clip they released below, it looks like they are going to get even darker than they have in the past. Why is a bloody Sookie digging a hole? Are the vampires going to unite and annihilate the human race? So many questions.

Honestly though, I am most excited for some more Alcide.  In a brief interview clip, Joe Manganiello promises his character’s role will be expanded and the writers are taking Alcide further than the books.  Eric, Bill, Jason and Sam have their charms but there is just something about tall, tall, Alcide and his scruffy werewolfieness.

Spoilers to follow.

I thought last season was hit or miss and have generally not been a fan of the overall story arcs of each season. However, this season certainly left us fans on a “What the? Did they really just? Are they going to?” pile of cliffhangers that are just too delicious to not keep tuning in to see how they all turn out.  Only 12 episodes were in season four, but they sure packed a lot of crazy, drama, death, blood and sex into them.  Let’s revisit season four in a nutshell because not all of us are lucky enough to do rewatches.

Sookie disappeared for a year in fairy world and Jason sold her house to Eric. Eric and Sookie bumped pretties.  Andy was addicted to V and had some encounter with a lady bathed in light in the forest; she made him promise to protect her and they had sex.  Bill, now the King of Louisiana, and Eric were trying to improve human/vampire relations after the Russell Edgington incident of season three.  Bill and Eric killed Nan after she told them she knows what Sookie is.  Jason was held hostage by the Crystal clan of were-panthers and the women forced themselves on his tied up body. Jason eventually escaped but there are some fans who think hey may still later turn into a were-panther. Jessica broke Hoyt’s heart, hooked up with Jason, Jason told Hoyt and the boys’ friendship is on the outs. Then the anti-vampire minister Steve Newlin showed up at Jason’s door, sporting new fangs.  Arlene’s baby may be possessed or haunted. Terry’s old army buddy showed up; Rene’s ghost came to Arlene and warned her about Terry’s friend.  Marcus mistakenly killed Sam’s brother because he had shape shifted into Sam. Marcus kidnapped he and Luna’s daughter, Emma. Alcide and Sam found Marcus and Emma with Debbie. Marcus fought with Sam but Alcide snapped Marcus’ neck killing him to save Sam, in front of Debbie. Marnie was killed and her spirit was vengeful; her plan to exterminate the vampires didn’t work so she possessed Lafayette and used him to murder Jesus. Alcide found a big old hole where Russell Edgington had been buried.  Sookie confessed to Bill and Eric she loves them both but cannot be with either of them.  Alcide told Sookie how he really feels and she did not reciprocate.  And Debbie, crazed with the loss of Marcus and knowing Alcide loves Sookie, showed up at Sookie’s house to kill her but instead shot Tara in the head. Sookie instantaneously reacted, grabbed the gun and shot Debbie.

Whew. Now that we are all caught up, what do you want to happen on the show? Should Tara be saved? Are you Team Bill, Alcide or Eric?
