Breakdown: Full Length Man of Steel Trailer

Last night a full length Man of Steel trailer hit the internet, albeit a bootlegged one. But it is watchable and it is very good. The trailer should be released in due time, but until then, here is a breakdown of that very trailer:

It begins roughly the same as the teaser trailer with some childhood scenes and more of Clark as an outcast, trying to hitchhike. We get that emotional shot of kid Clark in the cape putting his hands on his hips.

It’s then we get the opening line from Kal-El: “What if a child dreams of becoming something other than what society had intended? What if a child aspired for something greater?” It’s unclear whether they are on Krypton or Earth when this is said.

Next we get shots of a school bus crashing into a river or lake. It’s full of kids and they are all screaming and banging the windows.

“My son was in the bus. He saw what Clark did.” This seems similar to something that happened in Smallville on a bus and for some reason I can help but feel the boy is Lex Luthor. The voice over ends with a shot of Clark outside the bus, drenched, having just saved it.

We then return back to adult Clark as he is still an outcast but the more the trailer goes on, the more it seems like his exile is self imposed. He sees a school bus when he is an adult and it clearly brings back memories of pain.

“People are afraid of what they don’t understand.” Unfortunately it is impossible to to tell who said this.

Then we return to Clark’s childhood again as he uncovers stuff from his planet and his spaceship. The Kents hid what they could on the day they found him, whether to protect him or tell him in later life. We see his spaceship and a ring with the -El family crest on.

“It’s not from this world Clark, and neither are you,” Jonathan Kent.

We then get some shots of Clark dressed as Superman walking about and entering the Fortress of Solitude. This features prominently in the trailer, so it may in the film as well.

“This is my question – Where do I come from” – Clark. This may be him asking the program in the Fortress.

At one points, there is a shot of Clark pulling his shirt open that has become iconic over the last two decades.

Pa Kent then gives his speech from on of the teaser trailers: “One day, you’re going to have to make a choice. You’ll have to decide what kind of man you want to grow up to be. Whoever that man is, good character or bad, is going to change the world.”

It is at this point Superman leaves the Arctic. There are some stunning shots of him flying through the clouds and at his super speed.

Then there is a quick montage of Krypton exploding. Kryptonite goes everywhere. Jor-El and Lara are seen hugging a baby while crying, Jor-El looks nervous and out of time. Then  back to Earth as people run screaming, someone hugging a baby. It seems like this might be the day he landed on Earth.

After this, we see the humans fear of Superman as he is walking in handcuffs after being arrested by the army. The army wouldn’t be able to stop him though so he must have been willing.

More clips of some action. It looks big in this film, a lot of stuff gets destroyed. Someone emerges from a fire and a quick shot of Superman kissing someone, so quick it’s hard to tell – must be Louis. Then an even quicker shot of Superman fighting Zod.

“My father believed that if the world found out who I really was, they’d reject me, through fear” – Superman

Superman fighting an unknown enemy. He’s thrown into the big safe door from the very first official still we got. Looks slightly beaten.

“He was convinced that the world wasn’t ready” – Superman again

A shot walking behind a satchel, past the Daily Planet ball, see someone putting on glasses, this must be Clark as a journalist and not a fisherman. It looks like he un-outcast himself in order to help.

We then get the final shot of the trailer. Soldiers point their guns at something. But Superman emerges. They don’t move their guns.

“What do you think?” – Superman.

That’s the end of the trailer but it really sticks with you. It has that epic emotional music like the teaser trailers all the way through.

Zack Snyder has managed to make it grounded and unlike any Superman film to come before. You can really see that Christopher Nolan has had an input on this film.

Oh, the bootlegged trailer is still on the internet somehow, it wouldn’t take too much to find it…

There are a lot of mixed feelings surrounding the latest offering in the Superman movie franchise. Man of Steel is still a long way off, release date in July next year, but with Superman Returns leaving a nasty taste in the mouth of some fans will Man of Steel bring the franchise back to its former glory, or be another nail in the coffin?

I have to be honest, I enjoyed the last Superman movie. I thought the story was inventive, if a little slow, and the moment when Clark Kent ran out of a bar and pulled his shirt open to fly off and rescue Lois from an ill-fated shuttle launch made the hairs on my neck stand on end and made me feel like a ten year old again! With this in mind and being a fan of all things Superman I don’t think I will be disappointed with the film no matter what.

But, Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel will be worth a look for the cast alone:-

Henry Cavill – Clark Kent

Amy Adams – Lois Lane

Michael Shannon – General Zod

Diane Lane – Martha Kent

Kevin Costner – Jonathan Kent

Russell Crowe – Jor-El

Ayelet Zurer – Lara Lor-Van

Laurence Fishburne – Perry White

Antje Traue – Faora

Harry Lennix – General Swanwick

Christopher Meloni – Col

Not to mention its written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Christopher Nolan (wow) and of course directed by Zach Snyder. All in all a planet destroying amount of talent! (Oh……. Sorry Clark!)

And then there is the new gear. Superman has a new suit and we get a look at some Krytonian wear that I am sure will be all of the rage at next year’s comic cons all over the world. Some of the costumes were on show at Licensing Expo 2012 in Vegas and some alright-ish snaps have surfaced. See what you think.
