Marvel and Disney Announce Iron Man 3 Merchandise

Today Marvel and Disney have revealed an impressive amount of merchandise to coincide with the release of Iron Man 3 next month.  Being an absolute sucker for this kind of stuff I now have a wish list as long as my arm.  Surprisingly not all of it is directed strictly at kids.  There are many small electronic items and a couple of really cool collectibles.

Some items are available now while others have a release date on or around the date the movie will hit theaters.  You can read the official press release from Marvel below as well as get a look at some of the exciting items up for grabs.

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes (VG) On The Way!

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes (Partial) Cast

The LEGO video game franchise has been kind to the population at large, whether single or married, young or old, geeky gamer or not.  With the playable characters being easily controllable and highly recognizable classic icons, it’s tons of mindless fun for hardcore geeks and more experienced gamers who know every minute detail of the Batman/Star Wars/Indiana Jones/what-have-you universe, and it’s easy enough for those less in the know and less experienced button-mashers to join in on the fun!  Nerdlyweds are lucky enough to be a gamer-on-gamer duo, but to those of you who are less lucky (or equally lucky in your own way: Your honey pie will never steal your loot!), these LEGO games may be a good compromise or even a gateway drug to the bliss that we call married gaming.

The "Button-Masher" VS The "Hardcore Gamer"

Now for the newest of newsiness in LEGO video game news: LEGO is teaming up with Marvel and writer Mark Hoffmeier of Mighty-Morphin Power Rangers, Spider-Man: The Animated Series, and Marvel Super Hero Squad to bring us LEGO MARVEL SUPER HEROES!  As a chick who likes to kick butt, the Mrs. Nerdly half of our team is stoked about playable characters Black Widow and Thor (Hey, his hair is pretty!), these being only two of the OVER 100 UNLOCKABLE CHARACTERS!  Also in the way of good news, it doesn’t matter which system you consider to be your anti-drug because in the Fall of 2013 these characters will be assembling on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U, Windows PC, Nintendo DS (and 3DS), as well as the PlayStation Vita!

LEGO games are not meant to be genre-changing by any stretch of the imagination.  They won’t have insane plot twists or life-like graphics or tear-provoking scores.  Much like the Avengers movie itself, LEGO games are meant to be fun, to bring us back to a simpler time and show us how awesome it was.  A combination of the two can only be awesome, as LEGO is hardly known for skimping on their games.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance and Ultimate Alliance 2 were huge hits, but there are few single-character games in the Marvel universe that have garnished positive attention.  X-Men Legends was a hit, but a standalone Wolverine game fell flat.  The standalone Captain America and Thor games are critically panned (Our take on that is for another article), so LEGO has decided to go as far in the opposite direction as possible.  We’ve been promised characters from Avengers, X-Men, Spider-man, Fantastic Four, and more!  Having so many playable characters seems fun, however, a little daunting.  The one fault of the LEGO games is that they can be a little monotonous.  We’re playing through LEGO Batman now, and Batman and Robin as playable characters aren’t REALLY that different from one another.  How will LEGO handle making 100 playable characters that don’t just feel like skin swaps?

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes Game Informer

Their (sort of) answer to the above: “The game will pack in a plethora of super-cool character abilities, combat-like action sequences, epic battle scenes, puzzle-solving and a unique story told with playful LEGO humor.”  They are spending an especially long time on Hulk, making sure that he can smash through walls, doors, and cars in every level, not just the ones that have him as a primary character.  They’re also being particularly creative with the heroes’ abilities. Tony Stark will spend some time out of the suit, forcing players to use only his super genius to navigate levels, and Captain America’s shield can also be lodged into walls and used as a step to reach higher areas.  Even the hub, which will be Avengers-verse New York City, will be more interactive and story-based than hubs in previous games.  The game may still be a ways off, but we’re pretty optimistic.

What do you think?

In (un)healthy anticipation, we’ll be unboxing our still new-in-box (Hey, we’re busy!) LEGO Avengers set and maybe finally buying some of the many other LEGO Marvel sets.

We’re ready to button-mash and Hulk Smash our way through New York City.  Are you?  How will you pass the time?

HULK SMASH!!!!

Fans To Get Justice League Movie, Kind Of.

Fans looking for a Justice League Movie are about to have their wishes granted. Kind of. Variety is reporting that Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs) are directing Lego: The Piece of Resistance. The movie, which will be a live-action/animated combination that will be comprised of at least 80% animation and featuring members of the Lego Justice League.

Already cast are Chris Pratt (Parks and Recreation) as Emmet, the ordinary Lego mini-figure, recruited into a group of strangers to keep the universe from being glued together, and Will Arnett as the voice Lego Batman. Currently being courted for the role of Lego Superman is Tatum Channing.

The project, which has been in development since 2008 will be written by Dan and Kevin Hageman. Animation/Visual Effects house Animal Logic (Legend of the Guardians, 28 Weeks Later) will be handling the animation for the project, and Robot Chicken’s Chris McKay has been brought in to co-direct.

Lego: The Piece of Resistance is slated for a late February, 2014 release in 3-D.

Imperial Lego!

The Empire may have lost Star Wars but they are most definitely winning Lego as one of the most impressive vessels in the Star Wars universe gets the small block treatment.

The Executor, Vader’s flag ship Super Star Destroyer, is now available to buy in Lego form and the results are more than a little impressive.

With over three thousand pieces and weighing in at over 3kg, this almost four feet long representation of the ship is a thing to behold.

The model is also supplied with a data panel and a number of cool Lego men that can be used in the models removable top deck to recreate the scene from Empire Strikes Back where Vader hires bounty hunters to track down Solo and the Millennium Falcon. Nerd heaven.

Combine Star Trek and LEGO For Ultimate Awesome

Star Trek fan Christer Nyberg created his own version of the USS Reliant which was featured in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

I’m a huge fan of Star Trek. My favorite series of the franchise is Star Trek: The Next Generation. Trek fan Christer Nyberg combined his geeky interests in the toy building bricks and Star Trek for his very own creation, the USS Reliant (NCC-1864). The Reliant was featured in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, the story of which may be adapted for the upcoming Star Trek sequel. Christer said that he started the project in late 2010.

Many bricklink orders and bricks later (and over a year of prototyping and building) here she is! I have not counted the pieces (my sanity is grateful!) but I would estimate somewhere in the 10-15k range.

His next creation may be a Jem’Hadar Battleship. The Jem’Hadar are an extremely powerful race from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Personally, I’d love to see a Klingon Bird-of-Prey. Maybe his idea will be up on CUUSOO soon!

What do you enjoy creating with LEGO?  Leave your own ideas in the comments!

There’s a little bit of nerd in everyone.

LEGO Minecraft Now in Development

LEGO Minecraft is now in development following a proposal by Mojang.

News broke back in December that LEGO would consider a proposal by Mojang, creators of Minecraft, to produce kits based on the sandbox game. In a recent release from LEGO CUUSOO, it’s going to be a reality!

We’re happy to announce that the Minecraft project on LEGO CUUSOO has passed the LEGO review and we are now developing a concept that celebrates the best aspects of building with the LEGO system and in Minecraft. We can’t wait to show it to you—but it isn’t ready just yet. These things take time, so we appreciate your patience. More details are to come.

The CUUSOO concept is a lot like Kickstarter in that users submit an idea that they’d like to see created by LEGO and other users pledge their support in the number of kits that they would buy. At 10,000 supporters, the design concept is presented to the LEGO developers. It took Mojang, 48 hours to achieve their supporters, a true testament to interest in the game, which has been released for iOS and is now in development for Xbox 360 and Kinect.

Just as Minecraft players can build virtually anything within the game, hopefully the LEGO set will allow your imagination to run wild. Yoda has even shown up within the game! Hopefully, there won’t be any surprise Creepers.

Have you hugged your nerd today?
