2012 may be the end of the world, but what an end it would be. I can’t remember a year when I was this excited about so many films; they are all going to be huge.
The Avengers was the first to hit our screens and it has set the bar pretty high for all that follows in its path. Having broken multiple box office records (not that that makes a film mind you) the others are going to have an up hill climb to keep up. But when you see what’s on offer, the outlook looks good.
Below are some of the best films coming out this year, all of which I’m highly excited about. And yes, before you ask, they are in order of greatness. The Avengers doesn’t feature as it is already out, but I’m thinking it would slip in under The Dark Knight Rises.
So what films are on the list and what do they have to offer?
Dark Knight Rises
First and foremost, this will blow 2012 out of the water. Christopher Nolan redefined Batman when he brought out Batman Begins, a grittier, harder and more realistic take on the caped crusader. Then came The Dark Knight and WOW, he took it up a level. Now comes the final installment and it’s set to be big. The franchise has been a little quiet over the last couple of months but reengaged recently with more viral stuff and a new trailer that showed what this film is made of.
Amazing Spider-Man
It hasn’t been too long since Spider-Man 3 killed off the series with a passion but now Spidey is back and his web-swinging has never looked so good. This is darker, faster and more closely linked to the comics… possibly. Webb, the director has laid out who this hero is and is promising the ‘untold story’ which will make a nice change compared to the last three. The Lizard also looks like a bad guy to be reckoned with and not just a crap and smaller Hulk. Fans had been saying the film looks terrible, but if you’ve seen the newest trailer, it clearly isn’t. Unless a major change has happened to Spider-Man’s origin, in which case, fans will be pissed.
Prometheus
An Alien prequel and only 20 years later. Ridley Scott is finally returning to the genre that he helped thrust into the limelight with Alien and Blade Runner. So what’s next? Well, the story before Alien and my, my, my it looks good. A nifty viral campaign has really got things moving, although some fans argue that they may have released a little bit too much footage. However, it’s not over till the aliens kill everyone, and that looks sure to happen. Also, an android played by Fassbender, it’s going to go bad.
The Hobbit
The Lord of the Rings trilogy was one of the best to date. Spanning Middle Earth it told the story of Frodo and the ring. But how did the ring begin its journey? That’s what Peter Jackson has come back to tell us. The book is told from the perspective of Bilbo but a few extra scenes in the film will expand the book further still, introducing more wizards. It’s been a long time in the making and will arrive in two parts but they will be a worth the time. Also, how eerie is it when all the dwarfs are singing in the trailer?
Bond: Skyfall
Everyone’s favourite spy is back and even though the film is still filming, it’s going to be big. Only one official photo so far but this Bond will carry on the theme of grittier and more realistic, with fighting over gadgets. Rumours have also leaked about the storyline but I won’t spoil these here. Type it into Google if you really wanna know. However, a very strong cast again and with Her Majesty’s Secret Service behind it (I kid), it’ll be the spy film of the year.
Men in Black 3
Here come the men in Black (men in black), they won’t let you remember. Men in Black is one film that really introduced me to sci-fi as a kid and has a certain place in my heart. Now they are back and Will Smith is going back a little further as he travels back in time, all to save the planet once again. Expect snappy lines and funny aliens as they once again try to protect the earth from extra terrestrials.
Dredd
2000AD is the longest running comic book in the world. Stallone killed the film last time but now things are looking good again. Not too much has been released about the film, just a few pictures here and there. But we do know his helmet will not be coming off and that it will receive and R-Rating. So far so good. We’ll have to wait for the trailer to know more though.
The Bourne Legacy
The Bourne trilogy reset the standard for spy films. It’s what James Bond should have been, and now is. It came to a nice and tightly wrapped up ending but we all know the CIA have more up their sleeves and here it is. Jeremy Renner has also been outstanding in everything he has done up to this point, so having such a strong lead character on board can only be a plus. The trailer doesn’t give us too much but I’m okay with that, it is after all a spy film.
If for some reason that wasn’t enough for you, there is also Total Recall, Dark Shadows and a new series of True Blood and Dexter and a new show from JJ. Abrams – Revolution. Some trailers below.
What are you most excited for? Will anything top The Avengers? Is this a huge year for cinema and nerds alike?
