J.J. Abrams directs Star Wars Episode VII

A whole lot has gone down since late last year, primarily George Lucas selling Lucasfilm which includes but not limited to the rights to Indiana Jones and of course Star Wars to the Disney Empire who paid an incredible $4.05 billion dollars. Immediately Disney announced the making of the long speculated and continually denied Episode VII which if everything goes well will be released in 2015 with J.J. Abrams directing.

Soon after the rumor mill cranked up and has been churning ever since. J.J. Abrams was asked to direct and he respectfully declined only to come back early this year and accept the task while making history as a director who will soon have both Star Trek and Star Wars movies in his already impressive resume. If years ago someone would have told me that the same guy would one day direct Star Trek and Star Wars movies I would still be chuckling to this day as I’m sure many of you would as well.

Anyway in a recent interview, Playboy asked Abrams some questions fans have been a little more than curious about. First was why he had turned down the offer to direct Episode VII in which he talked about how different the two universes are and how his loyalty was to Star Trek in which he was finishing up. “It was like being on the most beautiful beach in the world and someone saying, “There’s this amazing mountain over here. Come take a look.” I couldn’t balance the two , so I passed on Star Wars.”

Everyone that is curious whether doing Star Wars will keep him away from doing another Trek, you can relax because I don’t think it will have any bearing at all on that. J.J. says it’s a possibility and like anything it begins with the story.

As far as Abrams finally taking on the job to direct Episode VII, I think we have Kathleen Kennedy and J.J.’s wife Katie to thank for that. Kennedy who is now the overseer of Lucasfilm, called Abrams, whom she has known for years, and during the conversation the realization of how great this could be slowly came to him. Finally it was his wife Katie that seemed to give him that final push and the rest will be history in the making.

J.J. Abrams also states that he will be looking to the original creator of the Star Wars universe for advice and guidance through the filmmaking process as Lucas will be staying on as a creative consultant. He says that this will be advantageous in making this film. This is an edge he didn’t have going into Star Trek because he of course did not have Gene Roddenberry to turn to when making what I consider to be two great Trek films. Needless to say,  I can hardly wait to see how Episode VII turns out as I am a huge Star Wars fan and have been waiting for another great one since The Empire Strikes Back as I’m sure many other fans feel the same way.

I mentioned earlier in this article the many rumors flying around. Of course we can’t put stock into any of these until we get confirmation from a reliable source. Among these rumors of course are the returning cast members from the original trilogy and as far as I know nothing is totally confirmed yet. I can tell you that it won’t surprise me if Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill make an appearance and not too long ago I would have said impossible to the chance of Harrison Ford being in this next installment, but seeing a couple of his recent interviews on how he skated around the subject instead of shooting it down like he has so many times in the past, I can say that this too is a good possibility, but I’ve been wrong before and I’m sure I will be again. As far as John Williams coming back to do the score, this is not yet confirmed but I feel it’s almost a given because it just wouldn’t be Star Wars without him conducting.

We have plenty of time to speculate between now and 2015. Until that time when we are all gathered in the theatre once more to see the next of what is said to be many installments of the now iconic saga, I have finally to say May The Force Be With You and more importantly may The Force Be With J.J. Abrams.

The Reviewer’s Word: Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters

I went into this movie with a fair amount of trepidation. Having not been truly convinced by the previews that this movie would be a worthwhile option for viewing, I decided to bite the bullet and choose the new film starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton as my weekly movie outing. The movie, which was originally scheduled for a March 2012 released date, was delayed to capitalize on the success of Renner’s big year in 2012, though Bourne Legacy turned out to be a bit disappointing. I’m not sure if the delay was also for the 3D conversion, as was the case for G.I. Joe: Retaliation.  3D movies have continually failed to impress me, but I opted with the 3D since its showing was at the best time.  Actually, I was pleasantly surprised at the technology that was used. It didn’t seem to be simply post-production conversion. It seemed as if there were shots that were crafted specifically for 3D and it was utilized, in my opinion, in a good way. From witches flying through the air, to Gretel’s crossbow bolts there are plenty of shots that allowed the production team to work their collective 3D mojo.

The film seems like it’s probably set in the 1600s, considering that the 17thcentury was rife with witch hunts across Europe, which eventually bled into the American colonies. However, there’s notdefinitive date in which the film is set. The town of Augsburg is referenced several times throughout the movie, which gives the audience a sense of place. Augsburg, as it turns out, is Germany’s third oldest city. Of course, if this movie is set when I assume it is, Germany actually didn’t exist. That, however, is a history lesson for another day.

We begin the movie with the back story of Hansel and Gretel. Surely, we know the tale by now. In this movie, we don’t have any pebbles or breadcrumbs, none of that “finding your way back home” business. (Or do we? *ominous laughter*) Rather, at the beginning of the film, Hansel and Gretel’s father drops the siblings off in the woods in the dark of night. Where they wander upon a (gingerbread?) house covered in candy and sweets, which is the part of the story that we’re accustomed to. What follows is safely along the tradition, but after the siblings vanquish the wicked witch, the next chapter of Hansel and Gretel’s story unfolds.

Most synopses about the movie state that the film picks up 15 years after the events of their childhood, though the film itself says “many years later.” Regardless, the duo has made a name for themselves as hunters of witches, slaying all that practice magicks. The audience catches up with them in Augsburg, at the scene of a witch trial. Without revealing too much of the plot, Hansel and Gretel must defeat a growing evil which may hold a clue to the truth behind their parents’ disappearance and reveal more about their destiny. The movie’s climax during the Blood Moon (not a spoiler, it’s in the official
synopsis) is an action-filled gorefest.

Renner seemed very stiff at the beginning of the movie and was not a very commanding star, but by the end of the film, seemed to lighten up a bit. I was glad to see Arterton back on the big screen and in a leading role, after seeing her last in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. I think that the two stars made a very good team and seemed to play off of each other well.  To be honest, I didn’t know that Famke Janssen was in the movie, so that was actually quite the pleasant surprise; I absolutely adore her. Finnish actress Pihla Viitala appears as Mina, a supporting character whose intentions are questionable throughout the film. Rounding out the cast is newcomer Thomas Mann, whose character Ben has a few scene stealing moments. You do find yourself cheering for H&G and the two have some great one-liners.  In addition to the obvious villains of the film, the witches, there is also opposition from various townspeople in Augsburg who want no part of the witch threat, including Berringer, the town’s sheriff. He’s a vile, loathsome creature that gets his comeuppance on multiple occasions.  Though not an ensemble piece,I do feel that the cast worked very well together with the exception of the two witch minions of the big bad, who were utterly forgettable.

I really do not have too many gripes about the movie. It did seem short. At a running time of 88 minutes, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters does seem to be the shortest movie that I’ve seen in quite some time. I remember an eight year old me complaining about the length of Pocahontas when it came out in 1995, but H&G does beat the Disney animated feature by seven minutes. Though the movie is on the short side, there are several truly action-packed moments. It’s pretty common for films set in European countries to have everyone speak in a British accent. Apparently director Tommy Wirkola didn’t get that memo. Hansel, Gretel, and Ben all speak American accents. Really, it’s as if Renner is just using his normal speaking voice.  There are muddled British accents, some German, and though I admit that I’m not an expert on Finnish, Viitala seemed like she was probably speaking in her native accent. That was one issue that threw things off just a tad.

Even as a historian I really had no problem with the anachronisms, because at the heart of it this is really not a period piece. You cannot really categorize this aspect of the film as steampunk, but what you see
is distinctly out of place. The pictures of missing children affixed to the sides of milk bottles gave me a good chuckle. I really liked the weaponry that Hansel and Gretel used.  Over the years, the pair had not only developed their own techniques for killing witches, they could probably write a tome on it. I loved Gretel’s crossbow and Hansel’s gun was very THIS IS MY BOOMSTICK. Clothing was a bit wonky. Their witch hunting outfits do seem to have a bit of period essence about them. The shoulders are formed a bit like full-plate spaulders, though the ensemble is made of leather. Unique twists regarding Hansel and Gretel individually bring new element to the fairytale mythos.

Was Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters a spectacular movie? Not really, but it was a fun, albeit short, take on the classic fairytale. I completely appreciate the fact that it was given an R rating by the MPAA. Let’s
face it, I don’t think that a treatment of the story in this manner could have withstood a rating any more family friendly. The film has its dark moments, due to the way that witches are portrayed as truly disgusting and inhuman, an aspect of the movie that I really liked. The makeup was really great. Most of the special effects were done in CGI, but it wasn’t very poorly done CGI, in my opinion. The movie even had a great score with some nice Goth rock moments.  Don’t expect Academy Award winning performances from anyone, I don’t think it’s deserving of its 17% on Rotten Tomatoes. Apparently enough people were intrigued by it, because H&G has taken the top spot this weekend with $19 million, beating out Movie 43 and Parker. If you go into it with low enough expectations, you won’t be disappointed.

January SciFi and Fantasy Movie Trailer Round-Up

Hey there nerds!

Want to know what awesome sci-fi and fantasy movies are coming in January? Yeah, yeah, I know, the month’s like, almost over, but still… here are some trailers for the month’s remaining nerd-friendly flicks, and a trailer for one that probably hasn’t left theaters yet in your neighborhood (I’m lookin’ at you, Mama). Check ‘em out to make sure you don’t miss one that’s coming your way.

Title: Mama

Release Date: January 18th

Rating: PG-13

Starring: Jessica Chastain and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau

What it’s about: Two orphaned little girls are discovered in the wilderness after being lost for five years. They move in with their uncle and his girlfriend, but a mysterious, dangerous spirit called “Mama” comes with them. Will it spell doom for the family?

Title: Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters

Release Date: January 25th

Rating: R

Starring: Jeremy Renner, Gemma Atherton, and Famke Janssen

What it’s about: Remember Hansel and Gretel? Those kids in the fairytale who were like, almost baked alive by some evil witch in the forest? Yeah, those mofos are back, and they’re PISSED. They hunt witches now for revenge, and judging from the preview, they’re kinda good at it. I’ll bet that old lady wishes she had left those kids alone right about now, because home girl is about to get beat down.

Title: John Dies at the End

Release Date: January 25

Rating: R

Starring: Chase Williamson, Rob Mayes and Paul Giamatti

What it’s about: Kinda hard to say, actually, but it seems to involve hallucinations, dimensional travel, and something called “soy sauce” that’s a metaphor for drugs and other trippy stuff. And oh yeah, this movie apparently did well at the Sundance Film Festival. That, and the drug stuff means this movie’s probably pretty deep.

Reviewer’s Word – Fun Size

Fun SizeFun Size: trick or treat? Typically when I think of fun size I feel like it’s nothing more than a tease – a tiny taste of deliciousness that leaves me wanting more and more. Today, after seeing Fun Size the movie, I think I’ve had enough! What the heck happened here? When I saw the trailer for Fun Size two weeks ago, I was laughing hysterically; I was sure I was about to experience another great teen adventure the likes of Superbad or (since I was sure it would be much more toned down than that) Can’t Hardly Wait.  Instead, I was served up a near miss. All the tease was there with none of the deliciousness.

I wanted to love this movie. I was trying hard to laugh all the way through, but one should not have to work so hard on a Saturday morning in a movie theater. Although there were a couple of genuine laughs (who can help themselves when teens striving for coolness are stuck in a dreadful Volvo blasting Josh Groban on a broken radio?) for the most part I watched, in horror, as the jokes fell flat before me.

The most puzzling thing is that I had the feeling that it should be working. The interwoven character story lines were there and all the right quirky characters were in attendance: nerdy-cute girl protagonist, rock star cute guy throwing a party, unassuming nerdy friend who wants to be more, best friend looking to party and move up on the social ladder, little “Dennis the Menace” type brother who doesn’t speak, single Mom dating a younger guy and a bunch more to add to the ensemble cast. The story also felt as though it should lend itself to the type of shenanigans that lead to pure comedy: troublesome little brother gets lost on Halloween night while sister is begrudgingly on the watch, hoping to sneak away to a big party, and mom is out partying with younger beau.

So what was missing? The first, most glaring absence for me was a solid soundtrack. Every great teen adventure has music to accompany the ride; add to that the fact that the protagonist’s recently deceased father was in the music business and I’m wondering how the music didn’t take center stage. While our protagonist, Wren, rocks a Def Jam Records label jacket throughout most of the film, and makes a Pink Floyd reference while picking out her costume, the presence of actual music that she seems to be a fan of is missing!

In addition, the characters needed just a little bit more in depth. I’m not asking for Oscar-winning realism here, but just something for me to sink my teeth into. I found it difficult to see past some character’s Halloween costumes (and wonder if this holiday might have been part of the problem). I found myself thinking of most of the characters as their costumes, rather than as their characters, meaning, to me, their true selves were ultimately forgettable.

On the positive end, there was a throng of young’uns laughing up a storm at some of the sillier points in the film, so it might be worth it to drop the kids off at the theater for this flick on an afternoon reprieve. However, even then, I think you shouldn’t pay more than matinee prices for anyone to see this movie in the theater since it’ll more likely end up being a Saturday afternoon cable filler by Spring.

In my heart of hearts, I wish I had just been privy to an advanced screening with rewrites planned afterwards. The movie feels like it has tons of potential but is still unfinished. However, since Fun Size hits theaters in less than a week, I’m guessing this was a finished product. So, I’m really sorry movie fans, I went into this one with high expectations and came out disappointed. If you go to see Fun Size next week and catch something you think I missed, please let me know in the comments!

Reviewer’s Word: Here Comes The Boom

Here Comes the Boom There are movies I go to because they are the blockbusters of the week – huge stars, huge budgets and the trailers have been haunting me for months (if not years – ahem – Avengers). There are movies I go to because they have an Oscar buzz brewing around them – the critics love it, the actors themselves claim to be forever changed by their performance, and the director has never steered me wrong before. Then there are the movies that are just plain old-fashioned good movies – a good time, laughs, entertainment and simple. What’s unfortunate for me is that I tend to miss out on the last type of movie until it reaches Netflix; I’m too distracted by everything else being thrown at me from Hollywood. Thankfully, this week that was not this case. This weekend I got the opportunity to see an advanced screening of Here Come the Boom.

Maybe you’ve seen the trailer for Here Comes the Boom with Kevin James playing a biology teacher who strives to save the music program of his school by fighting MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) professionally and thought to yourself, as I did, “Ha. Ha. Cute…. I’ll have to put that on my Instant Queue when it comes out. A good laugh, but I can’t pay movie prices to go see it.” Here’s the kicker: pay the money, it’s worth every cent.

Do you remember the first time you saw Rocky and you were punching and wincing along with every hit Balboa gave and took? Here Comes the Boom delivers that same type of excitement paired with a feel-good romantic comedy storyline packaged inside an inspirational teacher-flick. Kevin James has called the movie an “inspirational comedy”: that’s the perfect description. Here Comes the Boom is the rare film that is a perfect date movie, family movie or night out with your friends. .

Kevin James, a long time fan of MMA, and fan of Bas Rutten, his co-star, had his dream come true in the making of this film. According to an interview with MMAFighting.com James said:

Just watching this crazy guy with these knee-high boots doing the splits after knocking people out. When he actually came and fought in the UFC in America, we said how cool would it be to actually get to know this guy and maybe even train with him? And that’s exactly what happened.

Of course, if you are going to make a movie with real-life MMA fighters and you are going to get in the ring, chances are, you’re going to get hit!

I got to be honest, I got punched a lot [...] I wanted the fight scenes to be sloppy with me in there, I didn’t want it all (to be about) technique. It’s not like that in a fight. You’re plans kind of go awry, you’re getting thrown around, out of breath, not in the same position. (And because of that) I definitely got my fair share of getting punched in the face.

As a viewer, I have to say, it looked like it hurt… a lot. However, it also looked authentic. When you watch Here Comes the Boom, for a portion of the time you will swear you are watching a UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) pay-per-view event! And, at the same time, you’ll see where the passion for the sport lies.

I want to make sure, however, that you don’t get the impression that this movie is “just” about MMA. This is a movie about a burnt-out teacher (what we used to call a “malcontent” in my old school) who takes a stand for a meek colleague in a move that is completely out of character for him. This movie is inspirational by showing us how taking the steps to help others can completely transform our own personal world for the better.

Kevin James’ character is likable and believable. His romantic connection to Salma Hayek is well-developed and nicely paced. Henry Winkler does an incredible job of playing James’ colleague in need. Every character in the film has their own back story, so that their lives do not just hinge upon the progress of James’ storyline.

Here’s the deal: treat yourself to Here Comes the Boom this weekend, when it opens on October 12th, and bring someone who you like to spend time with. You’ll step out of the theater with a smile on your face and a warm fuzzy feeling in your heart. You will be inspired by the end of it, and even if your just inspired to have a good time, is there anything wrong with that?

The World Still Wants More Firefly

fireflybanner

If you’re even the littlest bit nerdy then there is no way you haven’t herd of Joss Whedon’s Firefly. The fourteen episode series and follow up feature film still suffer with a seemingly incurable case of popularity. The cast are still very much in demand to appear at comic and movie cons all over the world and not a week goes by without someone bugging poor old Whedon about another series.

If for some odd reason, maybe death, you’ve never heard of Firefly then here’s what it was basically about:-

Imagine if the Millennium Falcon had a full crew, only instead of a Wookie there was a ginger man with an amazing array of Hawaiian shirts and a whole lot more sarcasm.

There, good right?

SerenityPosterShip

All of this epicness started as a series of fourteen episodes in 2002 on the Fox network, but was cancelled for no apparent reason after only eleven were aired. Following its cancellation the cast and crew were reunited for the follow up movie, Serenity, which followed on from the ill-fated series as a kind of last hurrah to give everything something of an ending. Both series and movie followed the crew of the Firefly class smuggling starship named Serenity (name of the series and movie all in one ship, clever) as they did whatever they could to keep on keeping on.  The crew’s luck took a turn for the worse when they took on two passengers who, unbeknown to the crew, happened to be the most wanted pair in the galaxy. Hilarity and fights ensue.

So now here we sit ten years on and people are still eager to see more, and that got me to thinking, just where could they go from where the movie finished?

Before we go any further the rest of the piece contains !!SPOILERS!! So, if you’ve not seen the series or movie then go and watch them and come back to finish. It won’t take long, me and the missus watched them all twice in two weeks and you will not be disappointed.

So, at the end of the movie the galaxy found out the truth, that the evil ruling body known as the Alliance created the psychotic, rapey and murderey strain of humanity known as Revers in a failed experiment to control a population through drugs. A couple of favourites end up dead but the majority are still left standing.

As I see it there are a number of options for the show’s creators if they were to give the fans what they want and continue the story on screen.

1. Another Series

Unfortunately this is probably the least likely of the choices. This is mainly down to the popularity of the cast and creators making them too busy to commit. On the subject Joss Whedon has said that in order to make another series you would have to:

Step 1 would be to create a Kickstarter to raise the money to make it!

Step 2: Cancel Castle. Step 3: Cancel Homeland. Step 4: Generally destroy everybody’s careers. Step 5: Avoid Step 2

I think we all know that Joss is pretty tied up with the Avengers sequel but what about the main cast?

Nathan Fillion (Captain Malcolm Reynolds) – Currently starring in the TV series Castle, has two movies coming out and is currently filming with Robot Chicken as the voice of Green Lantern.

Gina Torres (Zoe Washburne) – Staring in the TV series Suits and is a voice in Transformers Prime.

Alan Tudyk (Hoban Washburne) – Has a crap load of movies coming out including Wreck-It Ralph and is currently working on Premature. Although he did die in the movie so probably wouldn’t appear.

Morena Baccarin (Inara Serra) – In TV series Homeland and is in the movie Old Days to be released next year.

Adam Baldwin (Jayne Cobb) – Currently appearing in, well everything, from Chuck to Leverage to Castle.

Jewel Staite (Kaylee Frye) – Currently in TV series The LA Complex but popping up here there and everywhere, like in Supernatural.

Sean Maher (Dr. Simon Tam) – TV series Make It or Break It with Much Ado About Nothing coming out this year.

Summer Glau (River Tam) – A little bit of Gray’s Anatomy with a TV movie to be released shortly.

Ron Glass (Shepard Book) – He was in CSI: NY last year and has a movie coming out later this year but was also killed off in the Serenity movie.

firefly_1

So, with the cost of production and the cost to the US TV and movie industry to assemble the cast it looks like it will never happen.

2. A Follow Up Movie

More likely maybe? Serenity the feature film cost around 39 mil to create and took about the same amount of money at the box office. Add in the ridicules amount of DVD and Blu-Ray sales to that and the popularity the franchise now has another movie would definitely be a huge money spinner. There is also a better time frame for the cast, meaning there could be the possibility of squeezing a movie in between shooting various massive TV series. And if golden balls Whedon was involved I don’t think many production companies would turn their noses up.

serenity

3. Spin Off

We have already seen that the full cast are all over the place working their arses off, but if one or two of them were free would a spin-off work? In reality I think only a couple of the main characters could pull off a spin-off series. Jayne or Mal may be able to support a solo series, but let’s face it they are never the same and all you think of while watching is how good the original series was. We wouldn’t want to end up with another Joey!

4. Copy Star Trek

Star Trek has given us many fine TV series. Plenty of spin off and loose tie-ins. But by far the most interesting are the different generations. There are three different TV series, set in three different time frames all revolving around the starship Enterprise. Yeah, it was different Enterprises and blar blar, but why could this not work for Firefly? Same ship, different cast, constant nods and respect to the original, original character tie-ins and appearing in flash backs, what’s not to like? It wouldn’t have exactly the same magic but it could work well with the right cast and is the only sure fire way to not upset fans. It’s is also my favorite idea and if Joss finds himself too busy I could step in and take over writing duties, but I imagine I would be at the bottom of a very large and talented pile if that job ever came up.

So that’s about it, the way that I see it. All we need now is for everyone to get together and make something happen. Come on guys, the world would be much shinier with more Firefly in it!

May the Odds Be Ever in Your Favor at Target

Target Mockingjay pin

In case you’ve been living under a rock let me bring you up to speed.  Today, August 18th, marks the DVD/Blu-Ray release of The Hunger Games and if you’re as rabid as a fan as I you have probably been drooling over the thoughts of being the first to own your own 14-carat gold replica Mockingjay pin from Target.  Did I mention they are only making 100 of these and releasing one a day on their website?  Did I also mention these cost $999.

While not all of us, myself included, can afford such a magnificent piece of memorabilia Target will also be releasing some more reasonably priced options.  Allow me to show you a small sample of what will be in my cart tomorrow morning.

Target Katniss Barbie doll

I am an avid Barbie collector especially when it comes to movie replica dolls.  I have been drooling over this doll since she crossed my Barbie Collectors Magazine earlier this year.  You know this doll will have a special place on my shelf very very soon.

Okay so I collect a lot of things and lunch boxes are another.  Plus this one comes with a thermos.  You know, for keeping broth at the perfect temperature for the Peeta in your life.

I LOVE this watch.  The only number on it is 12 and really as a fan what other number do you need?  Well maybe 11 in honor of Rue.  Plus you can never have too many items with Mockingjays on them.

Mockingjay Lightbulb

This one is probably not for everyone.  Unless you have a small reading cubby with a small lamp begging to be illuminated by something awesome.  If that sounds like you then by all means pick this one up for yourself too.

Technically, I all ready own a pair of these but I wanted to add these in too.  I love these hoop earrings and I have worn them to work a million times and earning just about as many compliments.  Non-fans love the unique character of these earrings and with a brass finish they go with just about everything.

Last but not least, a Target exclusive copy of the movie on Blu-Ray with 45 minutes of additional footage.  What did you think I would forget to add this to my cart too?

What will you be picking up along with your Hunger Games movie?

Bryan Singer Still Working On Battlestar Galactica Movie

Is Starbuck a man or a woman?

The answer to that question depends, in the most part, on your age.

If you’re a little older, then you’ll remember Starbuck as a kind of cheap Han Solo who looked remarkably like Face from the A-Team.

If you’re a little younger, then Starbuck to you is an extremely sexy, mid-twenties, blond girl who wears very tight tops. Both full of attitude, both can kick some Cylon ass and both equally as fancyable (although one would have meant a very different lifestyle choice for me).

starbucks

Starbuck and Starbuck in Starbucks. This picture is magical!

My point is this, although the 1978 and 2004 series are very different, the premise is still very much the same: Cylons come, people get killed, last people get on the Galactica and try to find earth while fending off numerous and weekly Cylon attacks. I don’t imagine many fans, of either series, wouldn’t like to see a big screen adaptation?

battlestar_galactica_cast_1a

Well, you’re in luck.

There has been talk about a movie for quite a while, but things have gone a little quiet recently. Step in IGN with an interview with would be Battlestar director Bryan Singer about what the plan his for the movie and where they are at the minute. And they were nice enough to film it for us. Have a look.

So, if you managed to miss any of those 57 seconds here’s a quick recap:-

Script, Cool.

Fits in well with both different universes.

Developments, recent.

Hope to do it.

bsg-header1

And that’s about the length of it. But at least we know for definite that it’s still in the works. More than that, it seems that Singer is very conscious of the differences between the two series and is doing his best to satisfy both sets of fans. It will be very interesting to see what he, and script writer John Orloff, can come up with because you can count on one sure thing- fans of both series will be very precious over this property and if the movie turns out to be trump I imagine both sets of fans will unite in slamming the movie all the way back to the twelve colonies. My fingers are crossed for you Mr Singer.

Animated Star Trek Set in Movie Universe?

Star Trek is starting to become quite big again and with the new film by J.J. Abrams, it has gained a new lease on life in the modern age. As well as the films, there is also talk of an animated TV series and/or a live-action one.

However, it seems like a live action one would be a little too close to the movie universe, so instead, screenwriter Roberto Orci is opting for an animated version, but set in the movie universe…

If the project gets off the ground, it would follow the adventures of the newest cast, but would be set between films. This has happened several times in comic books, where events between episodes or films have been explained in great detail.

Here is the exchange between TrekMovies.com and Robert Orcio:

TrekMovie.com: Is there some kind of handshake — or possibly written — agreement between Paramount and CBS for CBS to not do a live-action Star Trek TV series while there is a feature film in development or until after JJ Abrams produces three movies?

Roberto Orci: I don’t know how specific that is. I do know there is an conversation where all parties agree to do what is best for Trek. And sometimes that means leaving space for the movie and it may turn into “maybe we can do both.” I don’t think there is a hard and fast rule where if there is a movie you can’t do it. It means let’s be aware of whether or not we are cannibalizing Trek. Let’s be aware of not saturating the audience and having them not be tired of it but hungry for it.

TrekMovie.com: But do you agree with me that an animated series is…

Roberto Orci: Yes. It is less cannibalizing. I would like to see an animated series the most. When I think about it, it is the most different than what we are doing and still in the most in line with it. So I would like to see an animated series.

TrekMovie.com: An animated series done like the new comic books and game you guys are currently overseeing — set in the movie universe with the same characters, having adventures in between the films?

Roberto Orci: Yes, exactly.

Would you be excited to see a Star Trek animated series with the cast from the film? Does this tread to close to the line? Can an animated Star Trek even work?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Ultimate Collection, Vol 3 Preview

TMNT seems to be back in fashion in a big way at the moment. With all of the hype and anger over Michael Bay’s plans for the movie reboot (just a side note, when Bay started to do press for the second Transformers movie, he did say there were no robots in it, and we all know how that turned out. So don’t believe anything until the movie’s out!) it’s good that we can find some comfort in some classic comics. Conveniently enough, IDW are getting them together for us in one handy bundle (well, three so far), nice.

The classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles action continues in the third volume of IDW’s Ultimate Collections! In this outing, find issues #12, 14, 15, 17, and 19–21, featuring stories like “Survivalists,” “The Unmentionables,” “Dome Doom,” and the multi-part “Return to New York.” Presented in oversize hardcover, and featuring annotations from Eastman and Laird, you’ve never seen the Turtles like this.

TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles_UltimateCollection_Vol3-PreviewTMNT3With art from Kevin Eastman and written by Peter Laird, this third black and white installment continues this run of Turtles graphic novels from IDW. The comics are always a little darker than the mainstream animated 80s series, generally being compared to the feature films over the cartoon. So, if you thought the films were pants (your wrong) then you might want to steer clear. But, I do suggest you give them a try as some of the stories, mainly one shots, are very entertaining and feature all of your favourite characters.

The one down side that I can see is the lack of colour. Being turtles, all four of them look the same and it does have a bearing on the writing as most of the time speech is used to identify who is talking and who is listening. Having said that, the main identifying feature of the turtles (besides their weapons) was their colour of their eye wear and on the full colour cover they’re all red, so it probably wouldn’t matter any way! Also the price is pretty impressive, costing $49.99 (about £35) for the 249 page book.

But, if you are a TMNT fan who feels like splashing out, look out for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Ultimate Collection, Vol 3 from 1st August.

Jurassic Park 4, Rumours And Release Dates

Since 2002 rumours of the fourth dino instalment have been flying. From genetically spliced solders/dinosaurs, to dinosaurs with guns all the way back to a straight forward follow up, so let’s see what we know now and see what we think about the now confirmed Jurassic Park 4.

1993_jurassic_park_wallpaper_001

Writers – I think it is pretty obvious that Steven Spielberg will have his mitts all over this as far as the story is concerned, but, as for other writers, we have had a long list of names to choose from since JP4 rumours began. For a long time it seemed that the main man on writing duties would be Mark Protosevich, of I Am Legend and Thor. However, in June 2012, Rise of the Planet of the Apes duo Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver were confirmed to be taking over script writing duties, though their plans for the movie and story are not yet known.

Director – Spielberg has revealed that he will not be directing, opting to instead to produce the movie along with Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy. Although not confirmed, it looks like Joe Johnson, Jumanji, Captain America and Jurassic Park 3, will be the captain of this latest dinosaur ship.

Cast – ? Rumours of rolls for David Boreanaz and Keria Knightley, very interesting, but nothing confirmed.

Plot – Ok, so, there is still nothing set in stone. Frank Marshall has said in interviews that the Dinosaurs with guns rumours are not true, but so far anything else goes. One idea says that some of the dinosaurs brought back to life by the InGen scientists were carrying a prehistoric disease that now threatens to wipe out humanity, and no one has poo-pooed this yet. Sounds good to me but surly there wouldn’t be many people eaten, which is the main draw of the Jurassic Park movies.

Title – The title, ‘Jurassic Park 4: Extinction’ has been thrown around a lot and that would make sense if the plot is as stated above. But, as with everything else connected with this movie at the minute, no one knows!

Spoil it with CGI? – The reason JP dinosaurs look better than all of the others is the fact that the use of animatronics heavily outweighed the use of CGI, but with the trend in movies changing more towards computer generated monsters, will JP4 just be a big green screen fest? According to Frank Marshall, it’s a big fat no, check it:-

jurassic-park-4

That’s what’s gonna be great about it, technology’s taken a leap now that we can really do some great things.

Speaking to Collider in regards to modern animatronics and how the actual presents of the dinosaurs really helps the actors.

Release dates? – The word is that the Jurassic Park people are aiming for a Summer 2014 release, stating that the movie is a ‘Popcorn Blockbuster’ and a sequel to the third movie rather than a remake or spinoff. But, as for rumours of JP4 being the start of another trilogy then I guess only time, and box office takings, will tell.

JurassicParkTelltaleG

Finally – I am not sure if I am looking forward to this movie or not. The first Jurassic Park was amazing and I don’t mind telling you that it scared the crap out of me. Even the second movie was pretty good. However the third was pants, and with most of the same people involved with this intended fourth instalment I don’t hold out much hope. I also wasn’t a massive fan of Rise of the Planet of the Apes so it’s not looking good from my perspective. But, as franchises go, I love this one, I also love dinosaurs and people getting eaten, so will definitely be the first inline to see what they do with this movie.

Not official, but effin cool!

Comic Movies That Should Be Made And Who Should Play The Hero

Everyone loves a good comic book movie, right?

Everyone would love to see more of them, right?

Well, the two major studios, DC and Marvel, tend to stick to their A-team where movies are concerned, as they are the ones guaranteed to make the money. But, I can’t be the only one that would love to see some secondary/side characters get a movie outing and that got me to thinking. When I’m rich and famous, who am I going to cast as some of my favourite heroes for their very own movie outing?

So, have a look at what I came up with and see what you think.

Marvel

X23

X-23 – For the lovely, ex-prostitute clone of Wolverine I have ex-lover of a young Superman, Kristin Kreuk. I love X-23 and a movie of her solo comics would be awesome.

Luke Cage.1

Luke Cage – For the hero for hire I put forward 2 Fast 2 Furious star Tyrese Gibson. Cage is a cool character and would make for an interesting lead.

Miss Marvel

Miss Marvel – For Marvels leading lady, I think Amber Heard would do more than suit the roll. She is smoking hot and can easily give the attitude and leadership of the character.

Captian Britain

Captain Britain – Captain America gets a film so why not us? This dude needed to be British and I think the I Am Number Four star, Alex Pettyfer, would suit the role nicely.

Wasp.1

Wasp – Now, she’s probably going to appear in the upcoming Ant-Man movie, but I’m getting in first with Olga Kurylenko, ex James Bond star.

MoonKnight.1

Moon Knight – Johnny Depp would be great as the hero who encompasses all of the best Avengers in one messed up head. You could do some cool stuff with a Moon Knight movie and Depp does weird very well!

DC

The DC universe is a bit more challenging. Everyone wants a JLA movie and I think some of the others I’ve chosen could be in the works or planned for the future, but here we go.

Wonder Women

Wonder Women – There may be a bit of an age difference, but I think you can forgive me for that, seeing as it’s Sandra Bullock that I have for DCs leading lady.

Flash

Flash – I think that Dexter front man Michael C. Hall would be an excellent candidate for the fastest man alive. He’s an excellent actor and he would certainly be able to handle all that super hero angst that movie makers are so fond of.

Supergirl.1

Supergirl – We know she can sing and dance, and she can defiantly rock a mini skirt, but I think that Glee star Dianna Agron has the talent and the innocence to give the cousin of Superman a big screen outing.

Aquaman.1

Aquaman – We know he can kick some ghost ass, but can he talk to fish? Jensen Ackles would be great as one of DC’s most underrated heroes.

Batgirl.1

Batgirl – It wold be interesting to see a more serious take on this character and I think the lovely and funny Amy Adams could do a great job.

Cyborg

Cyborg – Can you smell something? Oh, it must be what The Rock is cooking with his handy lasers as Cyborg!

I know that some of these have been cast in the past, either on TV or in movies, but I think they would all be good as the lead in a future big screen outing. Feel free to let me know if you think a different actor could do better!

But, with respect, you’re wrong.

Nolan Suggests Dark Knight Rises Spin Off

Anne is incredibly precise and articulate about the psychology of the character. She’s really built it from the ground up, it’s just a delight to watch her perform. … She’s an incredible character and we’re very excited to see her, and hopefully we’ll leave people wanting more.

Well, if that’s not ‘letting the cat out of the bag’ (sorry) then allow me to elaborate.

The above quote was taken from an interview that The Dark Knight Rises director, Christopher Nolan, gave to Access Hollywood regarding Anne Hathaway’s portrayal of Catwoman in his latest Batman outing. And it seems that her performance impressed the superstar director so much that he would like to see her reprise the role in her own spinoff movie. But, as for Nolan himself, it appears he is done with the whole Batman universe for the foreseeable future, he went on to say…..

For me, Gotham and these characters, I’m done. I’ve told our story and I’m moving on … [but] I certainly think she deserves it, she’s incredible.

anne_hathaway_catwoman_dark_knight_rises-wide

Which is a shame as I imagine at least some of the on screen magic Hathaway managed to create was due to his writing and direction. But, if this does come about, and that’s a big if, then whoever does pick up the reigns couldn’t make a movie as bad as Catwomen’s 2004 outing, staring Halle Berry, could they? It would be good to see a dark and brooding Catwomen story as the character has some interesting levels that could be explored, if done in the right way of course. Fingers crossed.

Do Stargate and Independence Day Need Sequels?

independence_day_movie

I can tell you that Roland and I have been working together for the first time in 11 years and we’re very excited about the idea of doing it. Whether or not we can make this happen, if we can get all the pieces to come together, that’s gonna be challenging. But creatively, for the very first time since we did the original, I feel we have a worthy concept, a worthy path to go. We resisted doing the sequel for years because we still wanted to honour the first one. The first one gave us all careers, and we really love that movie and loved the experience. We didn’t want to make a movie because it was financially a good idea, we only wanted to do it when we had an idea and a concept that creatively felt like it honoured the first one – that it felt like an organic sequel as opposed to ‘let’s just go make some more money.’ I feel like we got it. I think it took a long time, but I feel like we finally got something that really feels like, ‘that’s worth seeing as a sequel to Independence Day.’

This was Dean Devlin’s comments on the plans for an Independence Day sequel while being interviewed by Heat Vision about his TV series Leverage, and he seems very excited to be working with co-creator Roland Emmerich once again. This news can be taken as either good or bad depending on your feelings about the first movie. So let’s ask ourselves three questions.

Does it really need a sequel?

No, not in my opinion anyway. The first movie was great. Special effects were amazing, the acting was good and the mix of comedy and action was perfect. As was the story, and that is where my problem lies with the planned sequel. The entire story was there, aliens attack, we get our ass kicked, we find a way to fight back, we kick their ass, the end. The assumption was that once we found a way to fight back it was a forgone conclusion that we won and began to rebuild. There were even shots at the end of the movie of ships being taken out all over the world. Job done. What more needs to be told? Also, would all follow up movies be set on the 4th July seeing as how that was what gave the film its title in the first place?

Have they waited too long?

Yes. Now, in the above quote Devlin talks about not wanting to do a sequel for sequel’s sake but waiting until it was just about the story rather than it being a money making exercise. While this news is great, as it can ruin a franchise when you can tell the second film was made purely because of the success of the first, where can they go? The last we heard about the plans for more Independence Days (it was a planned trilogy) it was intended for the follow up movies to take place straight after the first. If this is still the case maybe waiting 16 years, respect for the first movie taken in to account, is way too long. Surly this plan, if it still stands, would require a full new cast, thus further spoiling the appeal and all around goodness of the first film.

Do fans want another movie?

No. After trolling through endless comments on a number of sites I manage to find a total of 6 positive comments about another Independence Day and all of those had big ‘Ifs’.

So all in all it seems pretty pointless. That said, plenty of fans, including me, would go and see a follow up movie purely out of curiosity. So it would appear that it serves some purpose.

Now, in other news………..

stargate

Stargate has always had this empty hole. When we made the first one, we always intended on doing part two and three, and we were prevented for years. And our hope is that we can get another chance at Stargate and tell the entire story we wanted to tell.

That’s right everyone, Devlin and Emmerich are also the pair behind the Stargate movie and are planning more of those too. But, before we get started on that, do you think the ‘empty hole’ pun was intentional, seeing as the Stargate is essentially an empty hole? But, anyway, three questions.

Does it really need a sequel?

No. Stargate has become a massive franchise and far surpassed the movie. The off-shoot TV series, including SG1, Atlantis and Stargate Universe, have gone further than any amount of sequel movies could ever hope. SG1 even continued from where the movie left off, making a movie sequel even more unnecessary. But, with so little known about Devlin’s plans for Stargate, maybe there is room for a sequel. With the cancellation of SGU after just one season then a follow up and finish off movie/movies would be very well received, so do this instead.

Have they waited too long?

Yes. Very much like the above comments on Independence Day if the intention was to make a follow up to the original 1994 movie then a full new cast would be in order. Even if they were to use the cast from SG1, as would be a more logical approach, it has been off the air since 2007. The cast have all moved on to different things and Cornel O’Neill (Richard Dean Anderson) looked proper fat when he appeared in a few episodes of SGU.

Do fans want a sequel?

Yes and no. With so little known about the plans for Stargate as a movie franchise it is hard for fans to comment. There is plenty of confusion about Devlin’s ‘empty hole’ comment. It’s as if the guy has missed the past 15 years of Stargate goodness. What you can gain from fan reaction is that there is no point in a sequel to the original movie, which is what the above statement does seem to allude too.

So to sum up, you are done boys. Move on.

Hoffman Confirmed As Plutarch Heavensbee

Hoffman has been confirmed as Plutarch Heavensbee in Catching Fire and Mockingjay. With about two months to go until shooting for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire begins, casting news will most likely be coming quickly and furiously. Over the weekend, we reported that actress Jena Malone had been cast as Johanna Mason, the cunning former tribute from District 7, however, Lionsgate has yet to confirm this news and her picture has not been added to the Catching Fire Cast on The Hunger Games Facebook page. As of today, Panem officially has its Head Game Maker. Today, Lionsgate confirmed the details of casting Oscar-winner Phillip Seymour Hoffman as Plutarch Heavensbee, the Game Maker promoted following the disposing of Seneca Crane.

Hoffman won an Oscar for his role in Capote and most recently has appeared in Moneyball and The Ides of March. He was nominated for a 2012 Tony Award for his portrayal of Willie Loman in the revival of Death of a Salesman and will soon appear in the Paul Thomas Anderson film The Master. While invisible in The Hunger Games, the character of Plutarch becomes extremely important in Catching Fire and Mockingjay. To stay as spoiler free as possible, his duty goes well beyond the position of Head Game Maker of the 75th Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell).

In addition to the announcement that Hoffman has officially signed on as Plutarch Heavensbee, Lionsgate released the first official synopsis of Catching Fire:

THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) – a competition that could change Panem forever.

THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE will be directed by Francis Lawrence, and produced by Nina Jacobson’s Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik. The novel on which the film is based is the second in a trilogy that has over 36 million copies in print in the U.S. alone. Lionsgate will release THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE on November 22, 2013.

Ongoing casting news and information for the film can be found at: www.CatchingFireCasting.com

Hoffman is the first new cast member to be added to the roster. Stay tuned to Word of the Nerd Online for updates.

New Mad Max Starts Shooting

Ever since the last movie people have wondered just what exactly is Beyond Thunderdome. Now, thanks to George Millar, we are about to find out.

IMG_6831JPG_effectedmini

These are some set photos from the recently started shoot of Mad Max: Fury Road in Namiba.

IMG_6837JPG_effectedmini

The shoot was apparently due to start in Australia in the summer of last year, but thanks to an unusual amount of rain the normally barren out-back was in full bloom, with lovely plants and flowers as far as the eye can see. Less ‘end of the world apocalypse’, more Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah .

Newscom TagID: infphotos571548/Photo via Newscom

Not a massive amount is known about the plot of this movie.  Many websites are giving their opinions on what will happen, but they never agree. So, if we cobble together most of the information that remains constant we can get a vague idea. Deep breath everyone.

Right, so, the events in Fury Road are said to take place a short time after the events of Thunderdome, the last Mad Max movie, making this a ‘re-imagined sequel.’ Apparently the movie centres around the ‘Five Sisters’ or the ‘Five Wives’, everyone seems to agree its five women at least, being transported somewhere in the standard Mad Max style armoured convoy. When the convoy is attacked Max has to step in and save the day.

And that’s it so far.

Newscom TagID: infphotos571552/Photo via Newscom

The acting talent in this movie is very impressive. Taking over the role of Max ‘Road Warrior’ Rockatansky from Mel Gibson is the fascinating and intense Tom Hardy. Now this is an interesting choice, mainly due to the fact that Tom is a man mountain of musclyness. In the first three movies Max was a regular looking guy who had nothing to lose but still had his humanity and a conscience, which is in stark contrast to the almost super-human appearance of Hardy as Bane (Dark Knight Rises) or Tommy Conlon (Warrior). Also joining Tom are: Charlize Theron as Furiosa (or Costar depending on what you read, the character may also be missing part of one of her arms), Riley Keough, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Zoe Kravitz, Abby Lee, Adelaide Clemens (the Five Sister/Wives??) Nicholas Hoult as Nux and Richard Norton. Impressive.

Pi51d

Also, according to Wikipedia, George Millar’s reimagining is set to be a trilogy with Mad Max: Furiosa being shot back to back with Fury Road. This is great news as the original Mad Max films are great, let’s hope the new ones are too.

We started with Fury Road, but we then started to do a second story and a third, we’ve written the script for the second and almost finished the third.

The Amazing Spider-Man To Be A Trilogy

A picture of a poster for The Amazing Spider-man As all of you probably know, The Amazing Spider-Man was released last Tuesday July 3rd, 2012. As of now, it’s made almost $146 million. With how popular super-hero movies have been lately (as we can see from the high grossing Avengers) it’s no surprise that it’s been announced that Amazing Spider-Man will be a trilogy of films. The second film is set for a May 2014 release date. With it being five years since the last Spider-Man movie of the original film series was released, how do you think these new movies are going to compare? Are you excited for the possibility of even more Spider-Man?

While I personally haven’t had the chance to see the new Spider-Man movie yet, I have to admit I’m curious about how the new series will turn out compared to the old one. Will the lower-than-probably wanted gross keep the directors trying harder? We’ll all have to see how it turns out.

Very Cool Hit Girl Statue!

Now, this would usually come under the header of ‘Nerd Porn,’ but I was very aware of the fact that the statue was of an 11 year old girl and the title didn’t seem appropriate. However, this is massively cool!

Basic CMYK

From the feature film based on Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.’s Kick-Ass, Hit-Girl is a lethal martial artist and weapons expert; she has been trained to fight crime practically since her childhood.   In the film adaptation, Mindy is played by Chloe Moretz, for which this statue is modelled after.  Standing 9 ½ inches tall to the tip of her gun and measuring 4.5″ W x 4.5″ D, Hit-Girl has been sculpted and painted in meticulous detail by Joy & Tom Studios.  The Hit-Girl School Girl Statue is being offered for an incredibly introductory price of only $279.99 this September, only from Dynamic Forces!!!  Dynamic Forces has offered many other sold-out statues to great acclaim such as the Army of Darkness Statue – Inspired by J. Scott Campbell and the Red Sonja statue, by Michael Turner!

This announcement falls nicely with the release of the pint sized assassin’s own comic, Hit Girl, also by the creative team of Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. and with the announcement in this month’s Clint Magazine that the fantastic Chloe Moretz will be reprising the roll of Hit Girl in Kick-Ass 2, due to start filming this year for an August 2013 release. Also returning to their roles in the follow-up to the 2010 hit are Aaron Johnson (Kick-Ass), Christopher Mintze-Plasse (Mother F#@ker) and Lyndsy Fonseca (Katie Deauxma) exciting stuff.

More cool statue…………..
