Preview: The End Times of Bram & Ben #1

Starting on January 9, Image Comics will release a four issue mini that answers all those pesky religious questions that muddle about in our heads with The End Times of Bram & Ben #1. Image describes the book thusly:

What would you do if you were caught in the Biblical End Times? When Heaven raptures total bastard Bram Carlson in a “clerical error” – he’s sent back and immediately uses Armageddon to his benefit! Can his anxious roommate Ben save Bram from himself – AND the gathering forces of Armageddon?

Written by James Asmus (Thief of Theives, Gambit) and Jim Festante (writer and comedian for Comedy Central and MTV) and drawn by Rem Broo, The End Times of Bram & Ben is essentially a buddy-comedy with Armageddon as the backdrop. And I dig that. Religion in comics is hardly new territory, nor is the idea of the afterlife somehow resembling the DMV. Execution, however, is crucial, and I already like what I’m hearing. I especially like the idea of a complete bastard getting a glimpse of Heaven and then immediately trying to use it to his advantage on Earth. The exploitation of the afterlife, the bigger questions about God and the machinations of eternal beings appeal to me, especially if there’s a sense of humor behind it. It would be one thing if it was solely about Bram dealing with his brief dalliance in Heaven, but when you factor in the odd-couple partnering with his morally conflicted roommate, Ben, the story takes on new possibilities.

Asmus and Festante, however, are treating the book as less of an exploration of the nature of religion and more of a glimpse into what religion means to people in general and what happens if, say, we were wrong the whole time. Says Asmus:

“Despite the giant, colorful, violent elements of the Biblical apocalypse—this isn’t areligious story’. The real story Jim and I were excited to tell is one that shows a bunch of people reacting to one earth-shaking question:What do you do when you discover that reality isn’t what you thought—and you’re about to be punished for getting it wrong?

Kinda reminds me of the South Park episode where everyone goes to Hell except Mormons. It’s like one big cosmic joke that we were never in on until the punchline hit us straight in the unmentionables. Make no mistake, it’s not like Asmus and Festante will be answering all of the big questions – it’s only four issues, for cryin’ out loud – but having them as part of the narrative makes for an interesting roller deck of existential problems to ponder. I mean, how do you react to the end of the world? How do you deal with acknowledging that Heaven and Hell actually exist? How do you wrestle with the idea that your jerk of a roommate made it into Heaven at all – however briefly?

So color me intrigued. I’m looking forward to reading this book in celebration of surviving the Mayan Apocalypse. And what better way than with a book about The Rapture?

Superman: Earth One, Vol. 2 Preview

It was just this past weekend that I found a copy of Superman: Earth One, and I loved every panel of it. Writer J. Michael Straczynski and artist Shane Davis create a masterpiece in the retelling of the Superman mythos about a twenty- year-old Clark Kent trying to find his place on Earth and amongst humans. Every page of this graphic novel had me hooked and when I was done I just wanted more and more of this extraordinary story.

This Halloween, October 31st I will get my wish because this is the release date of Superman: Earth One, vol. 2. From the creative team of J. Michael Straczynski and Shane Davis comes the continuing story of a young Clark Kent as he struggles to deal with humanity, which he finds to be a much greater challenge than he ever fathomed as he strives to become the greatest super hero the world has ever known. Among the many things covered in this story include a woman who becomes a romantic interest and it isn’t Lois Lane, an evil dictator, and a man-like creature with a hunger that can’t be quenched, The Parasite. This story will answer the questions, how will the  world deal with a creature that possesses the powers of Superman but without his conscience; how will The Last Son of Krypton learn to live without his powers? This October find out when D.C. comics and the team of Straczynski and Davis bring us the highly anticipated sequel to the # 1 New York Times best-selling graphic novel Superman: Earth One.

If you are a Superman fan and have not read Superman: Earth One I would highly recommend doing so. I am glad I did and can hardly wait to see how the next book turns out. Halloween cannot get here fast enough.

First Look: Iron Man #1

Not sure what to make of this.  I started reading Iron Man again the last time it started at #1 with The Invincible Iron Man and have loved every issue.  Now Marvel has started this Marvel NOW nonsense and at this point, I don’t know where some of the Marvel books I am reading are going.  But just like DC’s New 52 reboot, I will give this a chance and look at it as an opportunity to jump into new titles.  So for me and other Iron Man fans, here is your first little peek at the new Iron Man #1

This November, Tony Stark soars to new heights in your first look at Iron Man #1, kicking off the all-new ongoing series from the chart topping creative team of writer Kieron Gillen and artist Greg Land! The lethal techno virus Extremis is out in the wild and for grabs to the highest bidder! It’s up to Tony Stark to contain it and that means creating a new suit of armor! When his greatest invention becomes his greatest mistake, Iron Man must act fact…and build faster! As part of Marvel NOW!, Iron Man joins a line of titles that will take the Marvel Universe in an exciting all-new direction, as the industry’s top creators join the top Super Heroes to deliver all-new ongoing series, great for new and lapsed readers alike!

First Look At AVENGERS VS. X-MEN #11

Thanks to Marvel Comics, we are getting our first look at Avengers vs X-Men #11.  This has been a pretty significant crossover for the Marvel Universe.  The consequences should have lasting effects for some time if Marvel NOW doesn’t wipe a lot of them out.

I will admit that I was very critical of this event at first.  It was slow to take off and it seemed the first issues were lethargic and pointless.  I was fearful that AvX would be just as meaningless as Fear Itself.  Then things really started to move; and once they did it has been a roller coaster ride.  AvX is turning the Marvel Universe upside down and I am loving every minute of it.

The biggest comics event of the summer hits its red hot penultimate chapter as Marvel is pleased to present your first look at Avengers VS. X-Men #11! From the creative tour de force of Brian Michael Bendis & Olivier Coipel, the Avengers gather together to take on the remaining hosts of the Phoenix Force with the aid of Charles Xavier! Can the combined might of Earth’s Mightiest, Professor Xavier, the Scarlet Witch, Hope and more put an end to their reign once and for all?

Which team will reign supreme? Join the conversation on Twitter with #AvX!

Here comes the pain as all your favorite super heroes enter the battle—and only one team will emerge victorious! Don’t miss out Avengers Vs. X-Men #11, an extra sized issue at no extra cost, on sale this September in comic shops everywhere, on the Marvel Comics app, and the all-new Marvel Comics Webstore!

Michael Avon Oeming’s The Victories

The Victories #1 is the first of a five issue series from Michael Avon Oeming, as you may have guessed from the title. The comic is set in a run down, rotten and corrupt city badly in need of saving. Enter The Victories, a band of superheroes out to right wrongs and save the world; aren’t they all. But, as ever, nothing is as simple as that.

victories 2

The hero, of sorts, of issue one in the series is Faustus, your standard mask and cape vigilante who looks to be a cross between Batman and the devil. When a high-profile court judge is attacked, by half man half animal villain known as the Jackal while out on a nice horse and carriage ride in the park, Faustus intervenes and a massive scrap issues. And that’s about all there is to the first book. Well, not really.

victories 3The book focuses a lot more on the characters, mainly Faustus, humanising him by letting us in on the struggles he is facing with his identity and lifestyle. The comic also begins to blur the age-old lines between hero and villain that we have seen work so well in countless other comics, making for a very interesting ‘where is this going?’ for all the major characters. Well, the ones that don’t end up dead at least!

Even though this comic is quite a slow burner I strongly recommend you give this Dark Horse issue #1 a look as I think things are going to take some unexpected twists and turns in the not too distant future.

The Victories #1, with story and slightly confusing art by Michael Avon Oeming, is out on the 15th August.

A Sneaky Look At INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #518 – WHO IS THE NEW IRON MAN?!

Check out these bad boys……………..

Iron Man 2

And I think you will agree that it looks pretty epic!

Iron Man 3

Marvel is pleased to present your first look at Invincible Iron Man #518, featuring the all-new Iron Man! Courtesy of the Eisner Award-Winning creative team of Matt Fraction & Salvador Larroca, tensions mount as the Spymaster’s rampage within Stark Resilient comes to its bloody end. The Mandarin is throwing everything he’s got at Tony Stark including amped up super villains! With a big target painted on his back, can Tony Stark make it out alive? Can the new Iron Man save him in time? Find out in Invincible Iron Man #518, hitting comic shops, the Marvel Comics app, and Marvel Digital Comic Shop this June!

See, even the guys at Marvel are excited!!!!

Iron Man 4

These pics are very cool indeed and I’m loving the stylized Tron look to the suit. But can the new Iron Man ever live up to Tony Stark? Will he, or indeed she (we would assume it’s a man – Iron ‘MAN’) be a permanent fixture, or just a visiting ass kicker? Who the hell knows? The popularity of Iron Man is now through the roof thanks to the movies and some impressive story lines in previous comics, meaning that any massive story arch has to live up to a lot of expectations.

Thankfully, if these pictures are anything to go by, it looks like it will not disappoint.

Preview Epic Kill #1

Epic Kill #1Raffaele Ienco‘s latest creation, Epic Kill, delivers all that its title demands. There is lots of killing, and every single kill is epic in its own right. However, there is much more to this book than just a bloody trail left in Song’s, our protagonist, wake. Underneath all of the violence is a mystery that piques the curiosity, pulling the reader from page to page, and, I suspect, from issue to issue of this on going series.

The mystery is simple: Who is Song and why is she running? When we meet Song on the second page of this book we know just about as much about her as she does. The artful way Ienco shows us Song’s disconnection with reality through his art and Song’s narration is jarring enough to also give the reader a sense of Song’s unease.

Ienco, who created, drew and wrote the book, took the time to explain his creative approach to this current work:

With this comic, I just wanted to jump right in and draw. No thinking about every aspect of the story and every line of dialogue. I just wanted to create. And if I “created” myself into a corner with the plotting, well I’m a writer – I would just be creative enough to write myself out of it.

Upon reading this, I went back to the beginning and “read” the book again, this time not looking at the words at all. The story still made sense, but perhaps that is because I already knew about Song’s broken vision of the world around her.

On all fronts this book looks to be another success for Ienco, who also wrote Devoid of Life for Image in 2008. Visually speaking, Ienco’s style is clean and realistic – even when he is portraying the surreal images of a shark swimming through a crowded hallway. He is able to portray Song’s vulnerability and confusion right alongside her stealth and deadly moves. The epic kills are worthy of the big screen.

In fact, one could say that this entire comic book had a cinematic feel to it, but they wouldn’t be the first to notice. According to Digital Spy, the rights to Ienco’s Devoid of Life and Epic Kill were both acquired by Content House who intends to bring them to theaters. Until then, though, Ineco has given us another great book to read. Get ready for Epic Kill to hit shelves and digital readers on May 2nd.

Preview: Green Hornet #24

GH Cover by Hester

Here for you nerds I have Dynamite Entertainment’s Green Hornet #24. This is the first time I’ve had the chance to preview this title, but I do have a vague idea of what the character is about from the recent film that came out… And of course, re-runs of short lived, 1966 TV series. I thought he seemed like a cool character to take a look at, and the creative team of writer Ande Parks and artist Igor Vitorino seems like a solid pairing for the book.
For those of you that would like to know, here’s what’s going on in this instalment of the Green Hornet series, from Dynamite’s website:
Green Hornet’s perception as a villain in Century City has been kicked up a notch, as someone disguised as the Hornet has assassinated the city’s Mayor. A pair of new villains finalize their plans to seize power, and a fearful public demands blood, with Green Hornet and Kato as the prime targets. Britt Reid has to find a way to clear his alter ego’s name while maintaining both his secret identity and his fearful reputation amongst the gangs of Century City. Green Hornet is now Public Enemy #1… with a bullet.
And you get exactly that. It’s a quality story and well written too. It’s full of action and excitement, exactly what you want from a character of this caliber. I wasn’t expecting to read what I read in this book, it’s slightly darker and more violent than I thought it would be, but that just made the experience even more enjoyable. This is only part two of a six part story arc called “Outcast”, but if this issue is anything to go by, it’s going to be a very entertaining story arc.
Panel
Another good thing about this book, is that Ande Parks’ words are accompanied by the brilliant art style of Igor Vitorino. I really like his style, it’s a perfect fit for the book, his Green Hornet is awesome and I think he’s done a brilliant job on this title. Well done sir.
So… My overall opinion if the book is that it’s a dark, edgy, action packed thrill ride and I think it’s a book you’d really enjoy reading it. One of Dynamite’s finest I’d say! I enjoyed reading it and I might even have to see what happens next issue too! Join me!
Green Hornet #24 is out this Wednesday, written by Ande Parks and drawn by Igor Vitorino.

Dynamite Entertainment Preview time!

I have been waiting a while for this one… A new The Shadow series has intrigued me ever since it was announced, especially with one of my Dynamite favorites, writer Garth Ennis at the helm.

For those of you who haven’t got a clue who The Shadow is or know anything about the character’s rich history, here’s a bit of background for you:

The Shadow is a character that first appeared in 1930 on a radio show called Detective Story Hour. The character then moved on to print in 1931 within the pages of The Shadow Magazine, which was a pulp series created by Walter B. Gibson.

The Shadow character is a skilled marksman and martial artist, as well as a
Master of disguise and stealth. His alter ego is Lamont Cranston and he is known for his distinct look which consists of a black slouch hat and a black, crimson-lined cloak with an upturned collar which is worn over a standard black business suit. He also wears a crimson scarf  just below his nose, covering his mouth, which makes him look totally bad ass.

Since the creation of the character, multiple movies have been inspired by The Shadow (you may have seen the 1994 film,  The Shadow which starred Alec Baldwin).

Now that you’re up to speed, let’s see what’s happening in this issue of The Shadow, from Dynamite’s website:

1938: The Shadow returns in a tale of blazing action and deadly intrigue, as a night of carnage on the New York waterfront plunges the mysterious vigilante into a conspiracy involving the fate of the world itself. As storm clouds gather across the globe, American Military Intelligence meets with a certain Lamont Cranston, determined to beat a host of spies and assassins to the greatest prize of all… but what that might be, only the Shadow knows.

panelfromtheshadowOkay, so I came in to previewing this hoping it would be a good book but… I left the book thinking that it was absolutely brilliant! Garth Ennis really blows me away in this one. I fell in love with it instantly. It’s awesome. I’d say the most impressive thing about it is the way The Shadow’s dialogue is written – it’s poetic in a way, and a joy to read. The artwork from Aaron Campbell is an instant hit also. This guy is a great artist, and the perfect pairing for Ennis on this book. The Shadow is yet another Dynamite Entertainment title that has left me wanting more instantly after I’ve finished reading it.

If you’re looking for a new series to collect, I strongly suggest picking up this title. It’s cool, dark, excellently written and the artwork is amazing. Why wouldn’t you pick this up?

As a special treat, here’s a couple of preview pages for you to look over, enjoy…

The Shadow #1 is released this Wednesday, written by Garth Ennis and Drawn by Aaron Campbell.

Until next time Nerds!

Press Release: Gambit Stacks The Deck This August

That’s right – The Ragin’ Cajun has dealt himself a new series, due to release this April! And here’s the oh-so-revealing image they released to us:

Gambit Promo Image

That’s right.  The series about Gambit… will be called Gambit.  One hopes for something a little more substantial, non? Oh, look – I’m already talking like him.  My wife’s gonna looove the next few months.

Marvel is prepared to release more details about the project on Sunday, April 15 at the Next Big Thing panel, 11am Central, during C2E2 2012.

With the tight editorial and creative team in charge of the current X-Men, it’s clear that this new series or mini-series has been planned for a while.  We also know that Gambit and Captain America will square off in an upcoming issue of AvX Versus.  Assuming the upcoming arc isn’t a flashback, that would place this new series during the aftermath of the Avengers’ assault on Utopia.  Pretty much anything could happen between then and now, right? We’ll find out soon enough!

Hush, Hush Graphic Novel from Sea Lion Books

Hush Hush CoverYoung adult novels are all the craze right now, and why not? They feature adolescent characters dealing with enough drama, romance and conflict in their own minds that the world around them is a super-charged with emotion from the get. Add to this that many of our protagonists are then faced with fantastic exterior scenarios that most grown adults would have little knowledge of how to deal with them, and you have a recipe for hit after hit page turning intrigue. Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick is the first of a wildly successful series of novels due to conclude in the Fall of 2012 with its fourth book Finale. However, while fans anxiously await the conclusion,  Sea Lion Books has a project due for release that may keep them sated for the time being.

On April 18th Sea Lion Books will be releasing the beautifully rendered graphic novel of Hush, Hush featuring an all-new original story by Becca Fitzpatrick herself. While the new story would typically be enough to get most fans super-excited about this release alone, Sea Lions books has done even more to ensure the built-in fan-base has been invested in this graphic novel throughout the process. On Becca Fitzpatrick’s website, she said, “Sea Lion Books has been so great about involving the fans in developing the character sketches for the graphic novel,’ thereby ensuring as many fans are pleased with Jennyson Romero’s rendering of Nora Grey, her best friend, Vee, and the mysterious, possibly dangerous, love interest, Patch. There have been numerous redesigns in the process due to fan feedback, but it looks like the book is finally ready for printing.

Sea Lion Books sent a preview to Word of the Nerd of the final look of the first six pages of the book to share with you while you wait one more week for the book’s release:

Preview: Secret #1

20120408-131544.jpgIt’s time for an Image Comics preview!

Here I have Secret #1 from Image Comics and the creative team of Jonathan Hickman and Ryan Bodenheim, the same team that brought you the 2008 limited series, A Red Mass For Mars which was also produced for Image Comics.

Secret is an espionage thriller which is said to ‘take a deep look into the shadow world existing between the government and private security firms’. Sounds interesting enough, here’s a little about the first issue of this new ongoing series from Image’s website:

“TEETH, WITH WHICH TO EAT”

A man gets shot in London, a law firm gets broken into in Washington, an accountant gives away the password to his computer, and something put to sleep 20 years ago awakens. What is the unsavory relationship all these things share, and how could it bring down two of the largest governments in the history of the world?

Ok, having read the first ish, I only have one thing to say: Wow. Obviously I can’t leave it at that though, so I’ll tell you a little more.

20120408-131536.jpg

The book is super cool right from the first page, immediately you are hit by Bodenheim’s awesome artwork and the unique colour scheme (it looks brilliant), the story is intense and will leave you wanting the second issue immediately after you’ve reached the last page of issue number one.

After reading this and Hickman’s other book, The Manhattan Projects, I’ve come to the conclusion that this year is going to be a very good year for him. Both titles have been brilliant and I can see this one going back for second (maybe third) printings.

You should know by now, I don’t just tell you to go get comics for the fun of it. I tell you because these books I review/preview are truly awesome books! I gain nothing from telling you to go get it, I just think you guys will enjoy them as much as I do.

Go get Secret on Wednesday and you’ll see what I mean.

Until then,

Preview: Peter Panzerfaust #3

No one can complain about this issue of Peter Panzerfaust being dull!

As always, this rendition of the beloved story of Peter Pan continues to deliver on the entertainment front, and as always, I find myself completely drawn into the story. Anyone who knows me, or who has read any of my previous reviews, previews and the like, knows that stories are very important to me. Artists come and go and are prone to being either replaced or temporarily switched, but so long as the story continues to be well-written, I will keep coming back for more in spite of the artistic changes.

In this issue, Peter and his ‘Lost Boys’ escape Calais and make their way for Paris in the hopes of finding it to be better fortified against the Nazi invasion.

Two key characters from the lore make their appearances in this issue, and the story continues to move forward as a result. Without giving away any spoilers, I can say that Peter goes up against Captain Hook (or in this case, Kapitan Haken), and we bear witness to just how he loses his hand. FYI, it’s not at all the way it happened in the original story. The issue ends with Peter meeting (and rescuing) none other than Wendy Darling

Again, while it’s not a direct retelling of the story (no pixie dust, no immortality, Peter can not actually fly, etc), there are nevertheless a few allusions. For example, as one of the aged Lost Boys reminisces about his time with Peter, he notes how the passage of time did not seem to apply to them.

When I was young, I thought I would never grow old. In Peter’s company, time worked differently somehow. You didn’t realize the passing of days.

All in all, this issue is a wonderful addition to what is shaping up to be an awesome new series, and I highly recommend that you get into it, if you have not already done so.

Brought to you by Image Comics, Peter Panzerfaust will hit the shelves of comic book stores everywhere next week, so be sure to pick up your copy! :)

Image Comics preview time!

This one I had to preview simply because I am a big fan of the writer, not only for his writing ability but also for the fact I’ve been watching him on TV for years. That writer of course is Jonathan Ross and the comic I’m talking about is America’s Got Powers.

This comic is Ross’ second outing in the medium of comics, the first being the sensational smash hit, Turf, a five issue limited series with Tommy Lee Edwards (Bullet Points, Marvel 1985). That book was set in 1920′s New York and dealt with gangsters, aliens and vampires. This new book however, is something completely different… Here’s what the blurb from Image Comics’ site has to say for the first issue says:

Welcome to AMERICA’S GOT POWERS! It’s the biggest TV show on Earth, where the chance to win fame, fortune and get laid are dangled in front of a generation of super-powered teens. All they have to do is WIN. Who is the fastest, the strongest or the greatest? Who survives? Young Tommy Watt’s dreams of being the greatest hero of them all might just be shattered when the greatest show on the planet begins to reveal its dark heart.

It’s a complete departure from Ross’ previous title and having read it already, I can tell you that this is one book you do not want to miss! It’s crazy brilliant. The concept of the book is fascinating, and I think the whole idea of what is pretty much a talent show for superheroes mirrors the kind of society we live in today. There are a fair few talent shows out there, and everyone wants to be the winners. This is the same concept, just with some kick ass superpowers thrown into the mix.

I reckon this one will be a sell out the creative team and Image for sure. Especially with artist Bryan Hitch (The Ultimates) on board. The artwork is superb, Hitch was definitely the right choice for this title, his art is the perfect fit for the story being told and it shows exactly what Bryan Hitch does best.

AGP Art

I strongly suggest getting this title on Wednesday, it’s a great story, the art is brilliant and I think you will all be very impressed with what has been produced by the pair. Add this title to your pull list!

America’s Got Powers #1 is out on Wednesday 11th April from Image Comics, written by Jonathan Ross and drawn by Bryan Hitch.

Until next time…
