Cosplay: The United Mighty

Ripples were sent through the collective Geek community recently when a comic book artist named Tony Harris went off on a four alarm diatribe about his frustration with really attractive (i.e. busty) cosplay women pretending to be full on geeks in an effort to appease their low self esteem issues by surrounding themselves with young, horny males geeks who, according to Tony, don’t stand a chance with such a comic book goddess.

Apparently this scenario happens ALL THE TIME in front of Tony’s table at every Con he’s attended. If there’s any truth to this statement, perhaps Tony should a) move his table, or b) shut his mouth and enjoy the view.

A lot of the Nerd writers around here felt it was best to leave well enough alone regarding Harris’s rant and call any more attention to his ignorant (and sexist) attack against the cosplay community than he’s already received, but he touched a nerve within the nerd collective that can’t be so quickly dismissed.

Cosplay (short for “costume play,” a type of performance art where people dress up in costumes of their favorite characters, be it books, movies, games, etc.) has always been under scrutiny from the general public. Many associate cosplay with this famous image of some poor, obese male individual clad in a Batman costume with nary a hot chick in sight. For years these people have been the scourge of conventions, easy targets for a good chuckle as you strolled the aisles with an armload of comics and toys.

Two things would turn the tide in the nerd collective’s favor: the growing acceptance of geek culture in the mainstream public (through venues like the San Diego Comic Con, film, and television), and model quality women in skin-tight superhero garb strolling the aisles alongside the unwashed nerd collectors.

Somewhere along the line the “booth babe” line had been broken. Attractive women (and men) were no longer confined to just handing out free gear. They were now as nerdy as you! See? They’re wearing a Black Widow costume! They openly admit to reading comics! They play video games and drink Mountain Dew, just like us!

Nerds once knew their place within society. They knew booth babes were simply a commodity hired by a vendor to pretend they loved something just so you’d pause by a table and drool. Now the lines have been blurred, partially due to pop culture media outlets like G4 TV where we see young, attractive women playing games all the time.

Once cosplay hit the mainstream, it became big business. Fewer and fewer half-assed ensembles are seen roaming the showroom floor, as cosplay designers work year round filling orders for various (and often expensive) creations. Many of these outfits end up looking better than the source material they originated from. As a result, there came a growing respect for these artists showcasing their work within this venue. Savvy social media marketers, quick to expand their brands, wasted no time displaying their ‘assets’ to the general public, even if they didn’t grow up as basement dwellers and closets fans

Inevitably a backlash from within the community would emerge, as these once idolized cosplay women would now be seen as “fake geek girls.” This is the heart and soul of Harris’s rant, attacking faux cosplay sirens for luring unsuspecting male nerds in with promises of Halo 4 deathmatches and Lord of the Rings marathons, then crashing them on the shores of disappointment.

Who’s to say if these women are soulless opportunists, and if so, who cares? A fake geek girl doesn’t diminish the essence of the nerd collective any more than a karaoke singer does to pop music. It’s not fair to whittle down the entire cosplay community to a few overly sexy individuals who may or may not really be comic books fans.

If anything, these performance artists should command your respect.

Look, when I attend a convention, I don’t envision cosplayers as fat douchebags and fake chicks with big tits. You know what I see? Heroes. Villains. Cinematic and comic book characters come to LIFE. These are brave individuals expressing their love for a genre. Their costumes are a reflection of their soul, and they’re sharing something with you they may keep bottled up for most of the year. They aren’t getting paid for all the hard work involved in making and displaying their interests, and that includes hours of gym time to make sure that costume fits properly.

Cosplay makes fantasy a reality, if only for a few briefs moments as you snap a pic of your favorite character, shake their hand, and compliment them on a great costume. In this day and age of global warming and shaky politics, we need those moments more than ever.

There will always be cosplay naysayers, but so long as there are artists out there willing to bare their souls, there will always be cosplay. As a fellow Browncoat once said, “We have done the impossible, and that makes us mighty.”

Video of the Week

San Diego Comic Con may have come and gone but it lives on through Video of the Week. During the Iron Man 3 panel, Robert Downey Jr. made a surprise entrance for fans, really going for it.

During his entrance, he acts more like Tony Stark rather than himself and it makes the entrance that much more enjoyable.

“How much do I love you?”

“jhklasfgjewbfjlwqbfkeq”

“How much do you love me?”

“jhklasfgjewbfjlwqbfkeq”

“Why aren’t we watching any footage yet?”

“jhklasfgjewbfjlwqbfkeq”

Also, got to love the Iron Man glove he is wearing.

Unfortunately, the video can only be watched on Youtube so click here to watch it.

The Walking Dead Season 3 News and Trailer

During the panel for The Walking Dead at San Diego Comic Con, fans were given the chance to see some of the faces involved with the hit AMC show, including some of the cast. It was during this panel that the audience was given some information about the much anticipated third season, as well as some insight on the past two. They were also shown a new trailer that features the hardships the group will have to face, newcomers Michonne and The Governor, and what people always like to see: massive amounts of zombie killing.

First lets take a look at the new trailer so that we can all be caught up to speed:

I will admit, I was really happy with what I saw during that preview. There are obviously a few things altered from the original comic books, but there have been plenty of those changes in the past, and it made for great television, even if it wasn’t an exact match to the source material. Still, it is great to see that most of the plot-points are being hit this season and that we are definitely in for some surprises along the way.

During the panel, the actors were able to discuss the new season and what people can expect from their characters. We all know that Rick snapped a bit at the end of the second season and Andrew Lincoln, the actor portraying Rick said this:

Rick gets pushed and pushed, and this season there’s a point at which he reaches that point where he breaks. I believe the expression is ‘bat-shit crazy.’ The past few weeks have been crazy.

Fan favorite Daryl, played by Norman Reedus, also spoke about the changes in his character and what to expect during the third season:

Daryl is Merle’s younger brother, and he’s been constantly put down and humiliated and was never really good enough. Once Merle is out of the picture and other people start to see Daryl’s worth, he starts feeling like he’s part of the group. They welcome him in; it’s the reverse role of the rest of [Rick's group]: They’re being torn away from things, and he’s found a world that he can flourish in.

There was a bunch more to come out of the Comic Book Convention in San Diego, and for more details about the third season, head on over to Hollywood Reporter. I didn’t want to go into TOO much detail about the other pieces of news that we learned this past week. I leave that up to you?

Personally, I am very excited to see this new season. I am already beyond this point in the comic books and am looking forward to see how things differ in the show and what they decide to keep in. The books that this season is based on have plenty of twists and gut wrenching moments, and I hope to see some of those appear. The only downside to this news is that the season will be AGAIN separated into two 8 episode chunks, which means we are going to be without the Walking Dead for the winter time.
The Walking Dead is set to air in October 14th 2012 and will finish up February 2013.
What do you think fellow nerds? Are you excited for the Walking Dead? Or are the other shows that are higher up on your list? Let us know in the comments below!!

Meme of the Week

Homeland is one of my favourite TV programmes at the moment. It’s gripping and tense and I can’t wait for the second season. In the build up to that second season, Showtime have made a few funny memes to promote the show at San Diego Comic Con. There are also memes for Dexter, Shameless, House of Lies, and Episodes. The fill line up can be seen here.

Hellboy Returns, Sort of

With San Diego Comic Con just around the corner, we are all expecting big things. News will flow over the next couple of days of things to look forward to over the coming year. However, some people like to let things slip a little early.

This is just such a thing. It seems Dark Horse Comics couldn’t wait to let fans know that one big character will be back this December. There is a slight catch though – he will still be dead from the looks of it.

Recently Hellboy was killed off in comics and it seemed to be the end of him for a while. There had been no news about the character up until this point, leaving fans a little disappointed. But in December a new book, Hellboy in Hell, will be launched.

This implies that the character will remain dead but whether he will be by the end is yet to be seen.

It also comes with the tagline, Death was only the beginning. What more could Hellboy get up to in the after life and will his name have anything to do with it? It does seem fitting that Hellboy is now in hell…

Daredevil Director Drops Duties

San Diego Comic Con began today but it isn’t all good news coming from the biggest Con in the world. 20th Century Fox seems to be in a big of a dilemma.

They had a script they liked, they had a director they liked, they were even about to start shooting.

However, it turns out that David Slade has dropped his directing duties for the new Daredevil film because it clashes with his time schedule for the pilot series, Hannibal.

But it gets worse for Fox and a whole lot better for Marvel. According to Deadline, if Fox don’t get it into production by August, less than a month away, then the rights will revert back to Marvel.

That sounds like a bummer for the company but could not be better for Marvel and fans of their film universe. It wouldn’t take the Disney owned company long to Daredevil to work, seeing him appear not long after the next Avengers film.

Would you like to see Daredevil included in the Marvel universe instead? Should Daredevil appear in the next Avengers film?

Item 47 Poster Arrives

Agent Coulson may be dead, but the show must go on and so must the short films that Marvel have been putting out to accompany the DVD and Blu-Ray release of their films.

We recently got wind of the new Marvel short to accompany The Avengers. Now we have a poster and it only increases our anticipation.

After the attack on the city in The Avengers, it seems a weapon gets left behind and this will be the centre point for the short film.  The 12 minute short film will see the weapon fall into the wrong hands. Two crooks (Lizzy Caplan and Jesse Bradford) find the weapon and when they get it working they start hitting some banks in the city – a real crime capper.

S.H.I.E.L.D agents (Titus Welliver and Maximiliano Hernández) are soon on the case though and it’s only a matter of time before the mysterious weapon is in the right hands.

This will be the first of a series of proposed short films to debut at San Diego Comic Con over the weekend and will be a new way into the Marvel film universe.

It seems these shorts have been a real hit with the fans but what do you think? Is this going to far now or should Marvel put out even more?

New Promo Poster Reveals a Giant Robot From ‘Pacific Rim’

On July 7, ScienceFiction.com posted the latest Comic-Con promo poster for next year’s robot-on-robot action film Pacific Rim, and this new image features, you guessed it, an image of a giant robot.

Take a peek!

The movie is about humans who pilot large robots in order to fight off alien invaders. It’s directed by Guillermo del Toro and stars Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, and Charlie Hunnam… and I’ve got to tell my sister, because she’s in LUUURRVE with Idris Elba. ☺

But anyhoo…

Since this is a Comic-Con-specific poster, and since the movie will have its own panel there, it’s to be expected that del Toro and company will bring some nice footage for fans.

Next year, those Transformers are going to have to watch their backs, because there’s a new band of ginormous automatons nipping at their heels at the box office.

Nerdist + Star Wars + Walking Dead = Joy Across the Geek ‘Verse

If you are reading this post, or any other post on Word of the Nerd for that matter, you likely are well aware that the San Diego Comic-Con is being held this weekend.  Hundreds of vendors, panels, and celebrity guests are gearing up to spread the joy of geekery to thousands of fans (and vise-verse) over a three day period.  Lucky for those of us who can’t be there in person, there are plenty of ways to get in on the action before, during and after the convention.

For example, Nerdist Channel on YouTube just posted an 8-minute short movie, “A LIghtsaber’s Journey to Comic-Con.”  The premise is simple: Chris Hardwick must travel from LucasFilm’s Industrial Light and Magic to the Santa Monica Pier with the titular lightsaber safely in-hand and deliver it to Course of the Force organizers before the start of the convention.

Peppered with cameos from the likes of Breckin Meyer (listen closely, you’ll hear him) and Robert Kirkman (Walking Dead spoiler alert!…sort of), this is a funny and charming 8-minute masterpiece. Enjoy, my fellow nerds.

If you just can’t get enough Chris Hardwick, check out my review of the Nerdist Live! Podcast taped in Atlanta, GA this past spring.

Dark Horse To Release Good Luck Troll Dolls On July 25th.

Since their creation almost 50 years ago, Good Luck Troll Dolls have been a consistent best seller. It is also recognized as one of the hundred best toys ever made. Since 2003, troll dolls have all but disappeared from the market place. Now, after a decade hiatus, Dark Horse is bringing back troll dolls in a unique way: in a collector series format.

The first collection of Troll dolls will be 15 unique designs in a variety of colors, patterns and designs each meant to pique the interest of collectors. Included in the first collection will be metallic, glitter, flecked, glow-in-the-dark and black-light sensitive variants. These variants will be scattered though the more common variants in a random assortment.

To offer some variety in the standard troll doll, Dark Horse is going to vary the colors of the hairs. Some will be green haired, some pink and every other color you can think of.

Attendees of the San Diego Comic Con who are also fans of Troll Dolls are encouraged to swing by the Dark Horse booth to purchase a limited edition white haired troll doll. Limited to 1500 units, this exclusive doll is also responsive to a Black Light.

Her Universe and BBC To Launch ‘Doctor Who’ Fashion Line on July 11th!

Her Universe, a company specializing in female sci-fi and fantasy genre merchandise, announced this week the acquisition of a license with BBC Worldwide to create Doctor Who apparel for the show’s female fans.

The Doctor Who goodies will debut on July 11, and items will be on-sale at San Diego Comic-Con during the convention’s run that same week. Her Universe will sell the apparel and merchandise at other conventions throughout 2012. The apparel and accessories will also be sold in the United States and Canada at www.heruniverseshop.com; www.bbcamericashop.com; and retail chains, including Hot Topic.

And this could be quite the financially savvy move for the Her Universe brand, since Doctor Who is the longest-running sci-fi television series ever and will likely go on for who knows how much longer. That means the company could be selling clothing, jewelry, and other themed products for a very long time.

It’s definitely a pop culture coup for Ashley Eckstein, Her Universe founder and the voice of Ahsoka Tano on Star Wars: The Clone Wars. She designed and created her company’s merchandise for throngs of customers.

“Her Universe is a line for the fans,” said Eckstein. “Many of our design choices and decisions are influenced by our fans and Doctor Who was the #1 requested license by fangirls for us to pursue next. It was truly a dream come true when BBC Worldwide asked us to do their female merchandise and I am beyond excited to share this extraordinary announcement with our girls today! In the words of the Doctor, I feel like screaming Geronimo!”

Check out more pics of Eckstein modeling her clothes below!

Stan Lee’s World of Heroes YouTube Channel To Premiere at San Diego Comic-Con

Hey nerds!

Gearing up for San Diego Comic-Con next month? If you are, here’s one more thing for you to look forward to.

Comic book icon Stan Lee will announce his new YouTube channel, Stan Lee’s World of Heroes, during a panel on Thursday, July 12, the convention’s first day. The programs will comprise scripted and unscripted shows, including Stan Lee’s Super.Model, FanWars, Stan Lee’s Academy of Heroes, Super Fans, Cocktails with Stan, DIY Geek, Geek Therapy, Head Cases, and more.

Vuguru, a cross-platform entertainment studio, announced yesterday that it will host the panel and feature clips there. Celebrities scheduled to appear are Stan Lee himself, writer Peter David, producer Jace Hall, actresses Bonnie Burton and Adrianne Curry, and actress and host America Young.

Even though the announcement is being labeled as the channel’s premiere, Stan Lee’s World of Heroes has already been available for viewing and subscription on YouTube, and it has a Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ presence as well as its own website. According to the YouTube page, Stan Lee’s World of Heroes channel will air “all things related to the hero lifestyle and enthusiast culture.”

Vuguru’s content has been distributed in more than 40 countries, and its other projects include Prom Queen; The Millionaire Tour; Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell; and Little Women BIG CARS.

Next month’s Stan Lee’s World of Heroes Comic-Con panel will run from 11:45 am to 12:45 pm at the San Diego Convention Center.

Avengers EMH Cancelled

For the last 6 weeks, the scuttlebutt surrounding Avengers Earth’s Mightiest Heroes said that it will end after season 2. These rumors were all but confirmed yesterday when Marvel announced that EMH will not be coming back for a third season.

But the Avengers is not completely leaving the animated format. In 2013, there will be a new Avengers cartoon called Avengers Assemble. Based on the teaser image alone, this team will be more in line with the movie iteration. Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor are on the team, so are Hawkeye, Black Widow, and Hulk. Falcon takes the 7th team member spot. A promo trailer will be unveiled at the San Diego Comic Con next month.

Is this disheartening? Yes. It would be nice to see where this version of Marvel could go. Am I upset? No. I enjoyed the show, but it needs to end on its own terms. Also, it’s good to shake things from time to time. New writers means new directions for the characters. It also means new storylines.
