J.J. Abrams directs Star Wars Episode VII

A whole lot has gone down since late last year, primarily George Lucas selling Lucasfilm which includes but not limited to the rights to Indiana Jones and of course Star Wars to the Disney Empire who paid an incredible $4.05 billion dollars. Immediately Disney announced the making of the long speculated and continually denied Episode VII which if everything goes well will be released in 2015 with J.J. Abrams directing.

Soon after the rumor mill cranked up and has been churning ever since. J.J. Abrams was asked to direct and he respectfully declined only to come back early this year and accept the task while making history as a director who will soon have both Star Trek and Star Wars movies in his already impressive resume. If years ago someone would have told me that the same guy would one day direct Star Trek and Star Wars movies I would still be chuckling to this day as I’m sure many of you would as well.

Anyway in a recent interview, Playboy asked Abrams some questions fans have been a little more than curious about. First was why he had turned down the offer to direct Episode VII in which he talked about how different the two universes are and how his loyalty was to Star Trek in which he was finishing up. “It was like being on the most beautiful beach in the world and someone saying, “There’s this amazing mountain over here. Come take a look.” I couldn’t balance the two , so I passed on Star Wars.”

Everyone that is curious whether doing Star Wars will keep him away from doing another Trek, you can relax because I don’t think it will have any bearing at all on that. J.J. says it’s a possibility and like anything it begins with the story.

As far as Abrams finally taking on the job to direct Episode VII, I think we have Kathleen Kennedy and J.J.’s wife Katie to thank for that. Kennedy who is now the overseer of Lucasfilm, called Abrams, whom she has known for years, and during the conversation the realization of how great this could be slowly came to him. Finally it was his wife Katie that seemed to give him that final push and the rest will be history in the making.

J.J. Abrams also states that he will be looking to the original creator of the Star Wars universe for advice and guidance through the filmmaking process as Lucas will be staying on as a creative consultant. He says that this will be advantageous in making this film. This is an edge he didn’t have going into Star Trek because he of course did not have Gene Roddenberry to turn to when making what I consider to be two great Trek films. Needless to say,  I can hardly wait to see how Episode VII turns out as I am a huge Star Wars fan and have been waiting for another great one since The Empire Strikes Back as I’m sure many other fans feel the same way.

I mentioned earlier in this article the many rumors flying around. Of course we can’t put stock into any of these until we get confirmation from a reliable source. Among these rumors of course are the returning cast members from the original trilogy and as far as I know nothing is totally confirmed yet. I can tell you that it won’t surprise me if Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill make an appearance and not too long ago I would have said impossible to the chance of Harrison Ford being in this next installment, but seeing a couple of his recent interviews on how he skated around the subject instead of shooting it down like he has so many times in the past, I can say that this too is a good possibility, but I’ve been wrong before and I’m sure I will be again. As far as John Williams coming back to do the score, this is not yet confirmed but I feel it’s almost a given because it just wouldn’t be Star Wars without him conducting.

We have plenty of time to speculate between now and 2015. Until that time when we are all gathered in the theatre once more to see the next of what is said to be many installments of the now iconic saga, I have finally to say May The Force Be With You and more importantly may The Force Be With J.J. Abrams.

Nerd Bytes: News and Notes

Composer John Williams

Composer John Williams

Nerd Byte: J.J. Abrams recently announced that John Williams, who composed the music for all six previous Star Wars Movies will do the same for Episode VII.  Williams also composed the music for such classics as SupermanJaws, the Indiana Jones films, Jurassic ParkSchindler’s ListSaving Private RyanLincoln, and the first three Harry Potter films. As you can tell from this list, Williams is the king of setting the mood with music. Music in movies can often be overlooked, but who could ever forget the iconic music from the movies on the previous list?

Robert Downey Jr.

Robert Downey Jr.

Nerd Byte: It has been reported in several places that Iron Man 3 may well be Robert Downey, Jr.‘s last run as the enigmatic Tony Stark. What would that mean for  Avengers 2? I personally have a hard time picturing anyone playing the millionaire playboy turned superhero besides Downey, Jr. In my opinion, we won’t have to. Downey,  Jr. recently appeared on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. When asked about his future at Marvel he answered, “I don’t know… I had a long contract with them, and  now we’re gonna renegotiate.” Iron Man may well have put Marvel movies back on the map, time to pay the man!

Nerd Byte: Coming off of the Star Wars celebration weekend, “May the Fourth” be with you too, our friends at  Stunt People have made a sequel to their Darth Vader point of view (POV) Lightsaber battle called Vader Strikes Back. It stars Eric Jacobus, Alain Bloch, and Gary Ripper.

Allison Williams

Allison Williams

Nerd Byte: I’m not sure which part of this story is most interesting. The fact that Allison Williams, of HBO’s Girls, is up for a role in Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four, or the fact that people are this far into the discussions about making another Fantastic Four Movie. While the last offering, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, wasn’t bad enough to never release, like Roger Corman’s version, it certainly wasn’t good enough to warrant a third film. Now, five years and several great Marvel movies later, we’re talking Fantastic Four again. There is no word yet if Allison Williams is being considered for Sue Storm, or another character, but the talk itself is heartening for FF fans.

Boba Fett

Boba Fett

Nerd Byte: The San Diego Comic Con is coming up this July 18-21 and there will be guests aplenty. Among the creators, actors, celebrities, and pop-culture icons will be a special exclusive guest…an action figure of Boba Fett. It will be a highly detailed 6-inch Boba Fett action figure from the new Star Wars Black Series. If that’s not enough for you, it also comes packaged with two weapons, his iconic jet pack and the ultimate accessory: Han Solo frozen in carbonite. This Special Edition will be available at the HASBRO booth for $44.99.

Jim Lee

Jim Lee

Nerd Byte: Man of Steel may be one of the most anticipated movies since, well, Avengers. Granted, its success could make or break the future of DC Comics based movies including The Justice League. Speculation has been the game so far, but now we have our first actual review! This reviewer may be a bit biased, but I don’t think anyone doubts the credibility of DC Comics Artist and Executive Jim Lee. While promoting Free Comic Book Day, he told several networks, “It’s epic. It’s got a lot of heart. But one of the things that was missing from the last Superman movie was the action and this movie has it in spades. It is a visual thrill ride. It is amazing. You get to see all the powers of Superman in all its glory and I think people are going to be blown away.”  Wow, a Superman movie where the best fight scene isn’t against a 747? That might just be worth seeing.

Nerd Byte: You don’t have to raise a superhero to be an awesome Mom. My mother loved and nurtured me, but also gave me the common sense to make it in a world that can be cruel and unforgiving at times. I don’t live near her these days, but I treasure the times that we talk and can spend time together. On behalf of my Mom, I thank all of you great Moms out there. Happy Mother’s Day! Now get on the phone and give yours a call!

The Future of Star Wars Gaming Shows Promise

Star Wars Lense Flares

When Disney bought the rights to the Star Wars franchise, nerds everywhere became giddy at the idea of a new series of films in the hands of the same company that revived the superhero genre with titles like Iron Man and the Avengers.

Video game fans, however, were a bit more cautious. Disney Interactive’s video games catalog is spotty at best. What would the future hold for Star Wars video games? Nerdy fears were apparently realized when Disney shut down Lucasarts and abandoned all future titles the studio was working on. That studio was our last hope!

No. There is another.

Electronic Arts announced today that they have entered a multi-year, multi-title exclusive licensing agreement with  Lucasfilm Ltd. and Disney Interactive. According to the press release:

Industry leaders and creators of best-in-class blockbuster games, the development and publishing teams at EA will collaborate with the creative teams at Lucasfilm to provide audiences with all-new gaming experiences set in the ever-expanding Star Wars galaxy. As part of the agreement, EA studio teams DICE (Battlefield series) and Visceral (Dead Space series) will join BioWare (Mass Effect series, Star Wars: The Old Republic) in the development of new Star Wars games.

“Every developer dreams of creating games for the Star Wars universe,” said EA Labels President Frank Gibeau. “Three of our top studios will fulfill that dream, crafting epic adventures for Star Wars fans. The new experiences we create may borrow from films, but the games will be entirely original with all new stories and gameplay.”

Personally, I’ve never had a beef with EA. The MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic was underwhelming, but I’m going to blame the stale MMORPG genre for that. If EA allows their teams to focus on their individual strengths in single-player or multi-player games, this can only mean good things.

Imagine: DICE releasing a multi-player FPS that allows you to play as an Alliance grunt or Storm Trooper in a tough ground fight. Visceral puts you in the midst of the Sith, allowing you to see just how terrible the Dark Side can be. BioWare could bring us back to the classic Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and allow you to go even farther embracing either the Dark Side or the path of the Jedi.

The press release went on to state that Disney Interactive will focus on delivering new Star Wars games for casual audiences on mobile, social, tablet, and online gaming platforms.

The Clone Wars Isn’t Done Just Yet

Depending on what Star Wars camp you’re in you either love or hate the Clone Wars. The animated TV series takes place between Episodes 2 and 3 of the Star Wars Saga and charts the three odd years of the intergalactic civil war that played a pivotal role in Darth Sidious’ plan for ultimate domination. Now, if you’re a fan of the series you would have been upset to hear that the Disney takeover of Lucas Film spelled the end for the cartoon action after 5 series, but it would appear that it’s not over.

star_wars_the_clone_wars_background_wallpaper

If you’re unfamiliar with the Clone Wars TV series, and as a Star Wars fan you really should be, the series followed the adventures of the good guys and bad guys through the Clone Wars! (Not just a clever title) Taking us through battles, strategies, blockades, trade negotiations and tax hikes that span the entire Star Wars universe and introduced a lot of great new characters, as well as keeping us in touch with some of the universes favourites, the series came to an end after five full seasons. But now it would seem that we are not quite done with war time adventures just yet.

The Jedi have been fighting a war with an army that was commissioned by one of their own, Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas. But who was Sifo-Dyas, and what happened to him? The dark lord of the Sith has woven an intricate web to ensnare the Jedi, but it is not full-proof and sometimes a small clue, and a bit of chance, can lead to the unraveling of the best-laid plans.

Those are the words of Clone Wars Supervising Director Dave Filoni, dropping hints around where the cartoon is heading and some of the questions yet to be answers (He was talking to the USA Today, for more and a sneak peek at some unseen footage click HERE). When the announcement was made about the cartoon coming to an end it was revealed that there were a good few hours of footage that had already been made hanging around and plenty of other stories still in the works that haven’t yet been made. It’s not yet clear if the show will continue on another channel or straight to DVD but it’s clear that they’re coming.

Right, time to flex that Star Wars muscle!

Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas

Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas

Filoni hinted at one of the major story lines centring around Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas, the Jedi who supposedly ordered the creation of the Clone army to serve the Jedi and protect the Republic. In Episode 2: Attack of the Clones it is understood that Master Dyas was presumed dead 10 years prior to the events in the movie. Also in the movie it is revealed that the template for the Clone army was a Mandalorian Bounty Hunter by the name of Jango Fett. Fett tells Obi-Wan that he was recruited for the assignment by a Lord Tyrannus, not Sifo-Dyas. Here is where things get interesting, and extra nerdy, Lord Tyrannus is the name given to Count Dooku after his fall to the Dark Side of the Force. Meaning that the creation of the Clone army was engineered from the beginning for the destruction of the Jedi and Sifo-Dyas was merely another porn in the Emperors great end game.

Now, here is where it gets tricky. If you follow the extended universe then the creation of the Clone wars goes deeper than that. It tells us that each of the Clone batches is developed for a specific task. Some are simple fighters with less intellect and more obedience all the way up to the top flight troopers, the ARC (Advanced Recon Commando) troopers, that are basically straight clones of Jango, with all of the Mandalorians battle skill and cunning. These ARC troopers are assigned to each Jedi as a second in command, meaning each Jedi basically had his own Jango following him around at all times. Jango Fett was most famed for one thing, the killing of six Jedi with his bare hands at the Battle of Galidraan. So, when order 66 came through each Jedi was accompanied by their very own, highly skilled, Jedi killing Mo-Fo. Job done, perfect.

clone-wars-9

However, where the Clone Wars cartoon is concerned most of the story has changed. It would appear that all of the Clones are created equal and given different training to obtain their rank. This coupled with a number of other things could have a bearing on the story of Sifo-Dyas that we are about to see. They will have to handle it carefully though as there is no mention of the seemingly ill-fated Dyas in the third movie AND if Sifo-Dyas’ fate is discovered then surly it would lead to, or at least raise questions about the creation of the Clone Army that should make the Jedi think!

Duchess Satine Kryze

Duchess Satine Kryze

One of the other things that changed in the animated series was the current state of Mandalor. In the extended universe Mandalore was still a self-governed planet of worriers, all about honor and brotherhood. In the TV series Mandalore is now a pacifist world living in fear of the return of the Death Watch, a Mandalorian terrorist faction. This was both good and bad. The extended universe version was both the more exciting and interesting guise, but the cartoon version allowed us some more insight in to the character of Obi-Wan.  Turns out that good old Kenobi considered tending his resignation to the Jedi for the love of Satine Kryze, Duchess of New Mandalore, helping to humanize the Jedi Master and strengthen the bond between him and Anakin as master confides in former apprentice.

Ahsoka Tano

Ahsoka Tano

Another addition to the universe thanks to the series is the introduction of Anakin’s war time Padawan learner, Ahsoka Tano. Ahsoka’s introduction, as well as being a kick ass little Jedi, serves as more attachment for Anakin and a keenly felt loss that builds towards his final fall. At the end of season 5 of the Clone Wars the young Jedi walked away from it all. Accused of a crime that she didn’t commit the young Togruta turned her back on the order to walk off in to the sunset (Becoming a Dark Jedi, a trained force user that leans neither to the dark or the light, one would assume!). This leaves a lot of possibilities for her character to return, either later in the animated series or maybe even in Movie form!!!!

On the whole Star Wars The Clone Wars has done a lot of good for the franchise. For a start, Anakin is a hell of a lot less annoying then he is in the movies, which is a massive plus, and it has gone a long way in giving us more information surrounding his role as the Chosen One and his intended purpose in the force. It has helped us get to know a lot of brand new characters and learn more about some of the universes finest and gone on to introduce Star Wars to a new and younger fan base insuring ticket and DVD sales will be astronomical for years to come. I’m glad that the series is not yet done and am very much looking forward to what is coming next. There have also been hints at another animated series set in another timeframe in Star Wars history, no doubt that will mess up some more amazing books, but should be fun and as a fan of comics I’m used to things constantly changing and nothing really making any sense. It seems that everything is still very up in the air and nobody knows what’s going on since the Disney take over. I’m sure it’ll all sort itself out in time. Until then all that’s left for us hardcore fans to do is sit and s#@t ourselves about how bad they are going to screw up all of the movies that Disney are going to bang out in the next few years. *SIGH*

Previews: Star Wars: Darth Vader and the Ninth Assassin #1

Let’s get this out of the way before anything else.

I *want* to like this comic. I really do.

But the first issue makes it very hard for me to buy into the concept, and I’m not sure what to do about it.

Writer: Tim Siedell Penciller: Stephen Thompson Inker: Mark Irwin Colorist: Michael Atiyeh Cover Artist: Ariel Olivetti

Writer: Tim Siedell

Colorist: Michael Atiyeh
Cover Artist: Ariel Olivetti

Let me set the scene for you: In Dark Horse Comics Darth Vader and the Ninth Assassin #1. The Rebellion has just won a major victory against the Galactic Empire by destroying the planet destroying Death Star. And in order to make sure that they are no longer able to strike a blow like that again, Darth Vader is overseeing… contract renegotiation for a mining consortium between what are apparently the human executives and the Nautolan workers (I’m not sure, it’s never really made clear) on a faraway planet. Anyway, the humans are getting the raw end of the deal (something that flies completely in the face of all of the Empire’s uber-humanocentric policies, by the way), and so what is the immediate response? The son of one of the executives bursts through the door to assassinate the Nautolans. This is a bad idea with the Dark Lord of the Sith standing in the room and he leaps into action defending the aliens and killing the executives son.

Driven by a need for revenge, this executive – you know what? I’m just going to make a command decision and call him Ex for the rest of the review. He’s never given a proper name.

Anyway, Ex decides the only way he can get his revenge is to kill Darth Vader. But he’s not going to do it himself. Oh no. He hires assassins. Eight of them in fact. Predictably, they all fail, because it’s Darth Freaking Vader that they’re going up against. So Ex spends several life times worth of credits to track down the “ultimate assassin,” and seeks him out with a group of hired bodyguards, intruding into his sanctum in order to beg for his assistance (cue them finding the figure on the cover).

Now, I could have overlooked the bad exposition, the lack of proper characterization (or you know, a damn name), and minor inconsistencies in the lore. But then we actually meet the title character of “The Ninth Assassin” (who we’re going to call Number 9). And we meet him by way of having him kill dozens of hardened mercenaries and soldiers of fortune in less time than it takes you to say “The Ninth Assassin.” This is of course all done off-screen and is apparently absolutely silent, like it was ripped directly from the pages of realultimatepower.net

He flies through the air with the greatest of ease.He finds your lack of faith, more than disturbing.

He flies through the air with the greatest of ease.He finds your lack of faith, more than disturbing.

That’s right – the character on the cover isn’t even the assassin. He’s simply one of the assassin’s “associates.” So this mysterious “ultimate assassin” is apparently a humanoid, possibly cybernetic ninja with a sword and black body armor with a metal mask. Yeah, he kind of looks like Darth Vader. And to make matters worse, the mask looks exactly like HK-47, the assassin droid of Knights of the Old Republic fame (and if that’s the direction they decide to go with this comic, I’m out).

Anyway, it should come as no shock that the price that Ex has to pay to hire Number 9 has nothing to do with monetary wealth. Just what it is I won’t say, but it’s a little bit awkward to see in a Star Wars property. In fact, much of the last third of the comic just doesn’t jive with the Star Wars milieu. At it’s heart, it’s always been about the good finding the strength inside to overcome the more powerful and numerous forces of evil. A ninja-(possibly) cyborg assassin that hides in an invisible lair and demands unorthodox forms of payment is not that kind of story. It might work in other science fiction settings, but it just doesn’t feel like Star Wars.

Beyond that, the book is great. It’s gorgeous, with Stephen Thompson doing the pencils and Michael Atiyeh doing the colors. Ariel Olivetti’s cover invokes a certain something – it’s just a shame that the character on the cover apparently isn’t going to see more screen time. It’s no Jan Dursema artwork, but it’s very good. It’s just a shame that there’s nothing more than a thin skeleton of a story to drape that art around. That’s not to say that Tom Siedell’s script is bad, it’s just… lacking body.

Final Verdict: Skip this particular issue. You’re not going to be missing anything by jumping into this story at issue #2. And that’s only if they can get their feet back under them after the missteps of this issue.

Defiance is Heir to All Things Sci-Fi!

Defiance - Season 1

Looking at the Defiance IMDB page is like glancing at the Sci-Fi family tree. Created, written, and produced by veterans of the genre Rockne S. O’Bannon (Farscape, Alien Nation, SeaQuest), Kevin Murphy (Caprica, Reaper), and Michael Taylor (Battlestar Galactica, The Dead Zone, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager), the show has roots in so many different iterations of science fiction you’d be hard pressed not to find the trope from which any particular character or scene originated. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. While science fiction can be both provocative and action-packed (sometimes simultaneously), getting an audience invested in a non-franchise science fiction television show is no easy task. You need familiarity to get the casual viewers, but you also need a few good hooks to lure in the hardcore and genre savvy audiences. Defiance tends to lean more towards familiarity, but I’d argue that’s necessary for the pilot if only to retain an audience that will come back for more next week.

With very rare exceptions, pilot episodes of any new show are, if not the worst, then the least enticing episode to watch after the fact. When was the last time you truly watched the pilot episode of any show? Pilot’s need to establish two things: the characters and the premise, which requires a lot of exposition. It’s why the story contained within the pilot episode is usually as basic as possible – to allow for as much information as possible to be conveyed in a short amount of time. Luckily, Defiance’s two-hour pilot gives it enough time to tell a half-way decent story, establish the premise and characters, and present a mystery that will act as the umbrella narrative throughout the season’s 12 episode run. This also gives viewers an opportunity to play Sci-Fi Bingo as they check off everything that makes Defiance a hodgepodge of their favorite genre tropes. Ready? Let’s play!

In the not too distant future of 2043, Earth is a re-terraformed dystopia after the arrival of the Voltans in 2013 resulted in a war between species that devastated the planet. The wikipedia page actually gives you a lot of background on the lead-up to the series, but I’d prefer to keep this summary as basic as possible. I’ll leave it to the series to fill in the gaps…hopefully. Anyway, at some crucial point in the war, soldiers on both sides decided to defy their orders and band together to save civilians trapped in a burning building. Dubbed the Defiant Few, the actions of these soldiers triggered the war’s undoing. In their efforts to rebuild, some humans and the various species of the Voltans live together in relative peace within heavily fortified and guarded cities scattered around the world while others navigate the Bad Lands – basically everything in between settlements.

DefianceDefiance is the renamed St. Louis, Missouri that our lovable scamp of a hero, Nolan (Grant Bowler), and his adopted alien daughter Irisa (Stephanie Leonidas) stumble upon while fleeing from a group of scavengers. Nolan and Irisa are scavengers themselves, traveling from settlement to settlement, trying to get enough cash to get to Antarctica, which is rumored to be “paradise.” Defiance, under the leadership of recently elected Mayor Amanda Rosewater (Julie Benz), is host to every species of alien from the war and we learn very quickly who the power players are as mine owner Rafe McCawley (Graham Greene) and mob boss Datak Tarr (Tony Curran) vie for popularity during a ceremony honoring the Defiant Few. Their animosity for each other is palpable, and it also extends to their children…well most of their children. And though Nolan and Irisa are more than happy to move on – the mayor is especially keen on that in the beginning – they find reason to stay when the murder of McCawley’s son leaves an open spot for town Lawkeeper and coincides with a plot to destroy Defiance.

If you’ve been keeping track, we’ve basically covered Firefly, the original Star Wars Trilogy, Star Trek, Alien Nation, Farscape, The Postman, and Eureka, just to name a few. There’s also the Romeo and Juliet subplot, but you can figure out where that one’s going for yourselves. There’s nothing all that original about any of the major plots and subplots, so the creators and writers have to rely on execution and the strength of their characters. In that sense, I think Defiance succeeds. Defiance - Season 1

Nolan is a direct descendant of Han Solo and Mal Reynolds. He’s actually one of the Defiant Few and a rascally opportunist, which makes him the perfect lawman in a town where not everyone is on the up and up. But he’s also got a soft spot for kids and underdogs as seen in his somewhat paternal relationship with Irisa. Their dynamic is the most interesting thus far only because it feels like a real relationship that a man would have with his young adult daughter. The episode’s opening with Irisa giving Nolan the silent treatment over an off screen dispute, only to be won over by a half-assed apology and a Johnny Cash sing-a-long is actually quite endearing. The pilot does an excellent job of building both characters without entirely spelling everything out for the audience, which I appreciate. The smaller moments of revelation like Nolan telling the Mayor that he saved Irisa and raised her, which is then expanded upon more when Irisa reveals to the deputy that Nolan killed her parents, makes their relationship even more intriguing and complex. And that’s all you can really say in terms of character development in the pilot. Everyone else is relegated to generic roles that will hopefully be expanded upon, but your meat and potatoes (and really the one reason I want to keep watching) are Nolan and Irisa.

There’s also something to be said for the inclusion of aliens in a science fiction show! Post-rebranding, SyFy has been fairly thin on shows with practical effects, relying heavily on CGI to fill inDefiance - Season 1 the gaps on shows like Being Human, Warehouse 13, and all of their original movies. While there are a lot of visual effects in Defiance (the last thirty minutes especially), there’s something refreshing in seeing actual prosthetics and make-up used to create the aliens. There just isn’t a lot of this on television anymore unless you’re watching Doctor Who or Face-Off, and even that’s a reality-based competition show about special effects make-up. This is where Rockne S. O’Bannon’s influence factors in a great deal since Farscape was a technical marvel of make-up and puppetry. None of the aliens in Defiance quite reach the striking looks of D’Argo, Scorpius, or Zhaan, but there’s a hint of Chiana in how Irisa is visually depicted and the Indogene race of aliens at least look interesting. Hopefully we’ll get to see more alien make-up as the season progresses.

Final Thoughts: Though Defiance may borrow from pretty much everything we associate with science fiction television, it’s a fun show that holds a lot of potential. I plan to keep watching. What about you?

Are There More Stars Heading Back To The Star Wars Universe?

The rumour mill for Star Wars Episode VII rumbles on with yet more big players from the franchise hinting at their involvement. The latest in a long line of stars rumoured to be returning to a galaxy far, far away is the one and only Anthony Daniels, or C-3PO as you may know him. But, as with the rest of the former cast, good old 3PO is playing his cards close to his chest. I think that this sort of thing is going to be happening constantly until the release date of the movie, which is scheduled for sometime in 2015.

star-wars-episode-7

So what do we know so far?

Well, we know it’s to be directed by J.J. Abrams and written by Michael Arndt with some assistance from George Lucas. And that’s about the length of it. As far as casting is concerned pretty much everybody who has appeared in a Star Wars movie or anywhere near a Star Wars movie has been linked with none of them giving a definite yes or no answer.

So, let’s get a closer look at the heavy hitters.

Harrison Ford (Han Solo) – Said it’s almost true and is willing to reprise his role with the stipulation that Solo dies, as was the plan for the character at the end of the original trilogy.

Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) – Along with Fisher and Ford has had meetings with the writer and producer of the new movie, though nothing is set in stone. Has revealed that George Lucas stated that if the original three main actors were not interested in reprising their roles that the characters would be written out rather than re-cast.

Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia) – Pretty much in the same situation as the other two. Has joked that Leia would be in an intergalactic old folks home or that she is married to Han and subsequently responsible for his death.

Anthony Daniels (C-3PO) – Another one dropping hints. Says he’s not sitting by the phone but it’s always nice to hear things. (Yeah, I don’t know either.)

Kenny Baker (R2-D2) – Pleased about the announcement of the new trilogy but other than that has said nothing. (Surely you can’t have one without the other, whether they get on in real life or not)

Sir Alec Guinness (Ben ‘Obi-Wan’ Kenobi, original trilogy) – Dead, no further comments.

Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan Kenobi, prequel trilogy) – Has stated that he’d definitely reprise his role if needed.

Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) – Has expressed his pleasure about Disney bringing back Star Wars but as yet it is still unknown whether he intends to reappear. It’s a pretty safe bet to say he would considering he is currently involved in making a Chewy spin-off movie.

So there we go. Everybody else is either dead, character wise, or are not important enough for a mention. But as I say I imagine rumour after rumour after rumour after rumour after rumour after rumour will continue to pour out of the Disney camp until the day of release.

And remember kids, these are just the rumours surrounding the characters appearing in the main trilogy, we haven’t even touched on all the rumoured Star Wars spin-offs to make as much money as possible, sorry, to satisfy as much of the fans wanting as possible. I have to be honest I am really looking forward to the next trilogy. I can’t wait to see where it goes and I’m positive that with J.J. Abrams at the helm it will definitely be a move in the right direction.

Having said that I’m a massive fan of the extended universe. There are hundreds of books, games and comics spanning from 10,000 years before the battle to destroy the Deathstar over Yavin 4 and continuing up to 30 years after Return of the Jedi. This is where the announcement makes me a little sad. Depending on where the story goes and what they take into account the movies will no doubt make many of these amazing books defunct and change the story line once again, which sucks as many of those books would more than stand up to the big screen treatment.

And as for the spin-offs, God only knows. The main rumour concerning spin-off movies involves the story of Yoda. This would make a great and interesting film, if done in the correct manner, it’ll be good to see the fans reaction to seeing Yoda fronting his own movie. There’s a lot of material to go on since, as of now, the tiny green Jedi grandmaster has no origin story, and no one even knows his home planet. So there’s plenty to explore. As for other spin-offs it’s pretty much guaranteed that whoever is in charge will choose the wrong stories. It would be simple enough to take a trilogy of books from the extended universe and make them into a movie. I for one would love to see the Darth Bane trilogy on the big screen, a must read for any Star Wars fan, or maybe see the rise of Palpatine, his apprenticeship and on to his plans to destroy the Jedi and rule the universe. Basically any Sith fronted movie would be awesome, make it R rated and go in hard!!!!! But only time will tell, fingers crossed.

Disney to Remake Black Hole

Black Hole 1979

Over the last week Hollywood is buzzing about a potential Black Hole remake. The Black Hole is a Star Wars clone Disney produced in 1979, although it’s closer in tone to Star Trek. Costing a then impressive 18 million dollars to produce, it is praised as the best Star Wars clone made. Today, it is a forgotten movie that is mostly forgettable and boring.

There might be some legs to this one.  Disney hired John Spaihts to pen the script.  His credits include last Summer’s Prometheus and next year’s Mummy. In Hollywood, if a company hires a script writer, it usually means the studio wants to make progress. If the script falls into the an appropriate cost range, Disney will greenlight the project.

So, why remake the Black Hole? The simple answer is it’s Hollywood. Talks of remakes are commonplace in Hollywood and every movie made has a potential remake down the line. Before this week, Disney’s interest in remaking the Black Hole is similar to how Fox wants to remake Major League at some point. It is always an idea floating around, always on the back burner, and Hollywood is always looking for the right script.

This time, the pressure is on Disney to produce a Black Hole movie because of its recent acquisition of Star Wars from George Lucas. The company might want to prime the public for a slew of Science Fiction movies with a Black Hole one. Personally, I don’t see the logic in that line. It’s Star Wars and it will guarantee to make its money back regardless of the public being ready for it or not.

If successful, Could the Black Hole remake usher in and new era of remakes?Regardless of the reason, the Black Hole is an interesting choice for a remake. If it’s successful, it might usher in an era where kid friendly Science Fiction movies are redone. I can’t wait to see the Flight of the Navigator or a My Science Project remake.

Star Wars #4 Review

Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Writer: Brian Wood
Artist: Carlos D’Anda
Colorist: Gale Eltaeb
Release Date: 10th April 2013

If you are worried about these comics contradicting or re-treading plots from the Star Wars movies or the Extended Universe, fear not! This eponymous series explores the rarely touched upon few months between the end of Episode IV: A New Hope and the beginning of Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. Fortunately, it’s living up to some of the best stories that Star Wars has seen in recently years.

Of course, the first thing that will stand out to you as you pick up/download the issue is the gorgeous painted cover by the one and only Alex Ross. Ross has painted covers every issue and they are simply beautiful. As luck would have it, the beautiful artwork doesn’t stop there.

The combination of Carlos D’Anda‘s art and Gabe Eltaeb‘s coloring is, truly, a thing to behold. The art team seem to Star-Wars_4 Coverreally hit their stride with the various machines the Star Wars universe. The detail that has been poured into every spaceship, droid and even Darth Vader (hey, he’s more machine than man!) is nothing short of breath-taking. The TIE Interceptor has never looked so good! Accompanying these intricate ships and machines is Eltaeb’s lighting effects. From the engine of the Millenium Falcon to the shine of C-3PO and R2D2, the gorgeous lighting steals the show for me.

My main complaint with the book is definitely the faces of the main characters. None of them look like their movie counterparts or even anyone in particular. Luke Skywalker not only doesn’t look like Mark Hamill, he looks like any young blonde guy. This Han Solo could be almost any brown haired caucasian man. Even Chewbacca and Admiral Ackbar don’t look quite right. If the readers didn’t know better, they could be any Wookiee or Mon Calamari.

Right along side the art. Brian Wood‘s scripts are as solid as ever. While the upcoming twist probably won’t blow our minds (read the issue twice and you’ll almost definitely make the connections) but the dialogue is great throughout. The dynamic between Han and Chewie is fantastic and the few words that escape Vader’s are chilling as they’ve ever been.
It’s also very nice to see that the captions that had clogged some panels in the previous three issues are considerably toned down.

At this point, Dark Horse could easily be phoning these books in so it’s good to see that they are maintaining a high standard as their time with the Star Wars license comes to a close. Oh and if you can read those phonetic Shyriiwook (the main Wookiee dialect) balloons without reading them out loud with your best Chewie impression, you’re a better person than I am.

Disney Closes LucasArts, Lays Off All Staff

Disney has laid off approximately 150 LucasArts staff and cancelled Star Wars 1313 and Star Wars: First Assault, Kotaku reports.

“After evaluating our position in the games market, we’ve decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company’s risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games,” says LucasFilms in a statement, according to Kotaku.

This comes after months of rumors about trouble for the Star Wars developers since the LucasFilms purchase by Disney. Allegedly last September LucasArts froze all hiring and new game announcements following the Disney purchase and rumors of a studio closure followed last September. Today marks the first official word of the change of direction for LucasArts.

LucasArts first made a name for itself in the 1990’s with its classic adventure games. Games like Escape from Monkey Island and Maniac Mansion became popular with sharp writing and utilizing the Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion (SCUMM). SCUMM is a combination game engine and programming language for placing items, locations and inserting dialogue into the game. SCUMM was used up until 1998 when the games Grim Fandango and Escape From Monkey Island replaced it with GrimE.

In the 2000’s LucasArts shifted development over to primarily working on Star Wars licensed games. Some of their biggest hits include the massive team-based shooters in the Star Wars Battlefront series on the PlayStation 2 and Xbox and the physics playground Star Wars Unleashed on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Disney has expressed it plans to continue producing Star Wars video games, but since they say that LucasArts will fill the role of a “licensing model” odds are good that they will issue the licence for the game to other developers.
