5 Comics Not To Miss This Week

Two women who share a face either stand together or die together, the final chapter starts of a fan-favorite amateur, a world changing decision is made, another world changing decision is made, and almost assuredly no decision is made.  No, this isn’t the breakdown of what’s going on next season on American Idol; we’ve gone through this week’s comic releases and determined the 5 Comics Not to Miss This Week!

Supergirl 20Supergirl #20

Issue #19 of this book had both Supergirl and Powergirl1 facing down Sanctuary as it assumed that one of them was a clone and needed to be destroyed. Supergirl had not yet fully recovered from her severe kryptonite poisoning, and was suffering a relapse. Got it so far? Good.

Well for issue 20, DC is saying that Kara (Supergirl) will be dying, and Karen (Powergirl) will be taking her place. Will it last? Probably not, but it will at least make for a read that you don’t want to miss this week.

1 So, as of now, the number of people who know that Karen and Helena are in this dimension seems to be limited to Kara, and a dead 10-year-old. How long before the rest of the DCU know there is something amiss?

KA3-1Kick-Ass 3 #1

When we last saw our intrepid band of amateur superheroes, Justice Forever had just saved the citizens of New York, Kick-Ass was on the run, and Hit-Girl was being arrested.

So what does Dave do now that he is the leader of Justice Forever? His first step is to free Mindy, which may be a lot harder to do now that he is being hunted by both criminals and the police. Make sure not to miss the first installment in the Last Kick-Ass story!

AoU 8Age of Ultron #8

Against everyone’s better judgement, Wolverine and Sue Storm traveled back in time to kill Hank Pym before he was able to create Ultron. In the manner these types of stories usually progress, they return to their own time to find that they’ve completely screwed up history.

So what now? Well in this issue, we find out who is in charge of the world in this altered timeline (my money, as always, is on Doop), and, according to Marvel, “a reality-spanning choice is made this issue that will affect the Marvel Universe for years and years to come.”

BSG01CovRossBattlestar Galactica #1

2013 is the 35th anniversary of the original Battlestar Galactica. So Dynamite is helping fans celebrate with this new ongoing title. And what is the best way to remember this classic series? By erasing its continuity from history, of course.

After a devastating surprise Cylon attack, Commander Adama is left with no choice but to utilize Dr. Zee’s (remember him? From Galactica 1980? No? Lucky you.) experimental temporal weaponry against them. Well faster than you can say “experimental temporal weaponry” something goes wrong and leaves Apollo and Starbuck stranded in an alternate reality, without Galactica, and no way home.

Fans of the classic TV series should not miss this one!

RegularShow_CVARegular Show #1

If you are anything like me, and can’t get enough of the unadulterated insanity that is Cartoon Network’s Regular Show, then I don’t need to tell you about this book. If not, well, here is what is all about, straight from BOOM! Studio’s solicitation:

“Mordecai the Bluejay and Rigby the Raccoon, a couple of best bros in their twenties just tryin’ to chill for a bit, man. But when you’re livin’ in as crazy a world as they are, no day can be called…regular!”

Reviewer’s Word – Superman Unbound

If you’ve followed Word of the Nerd for very long you’ve probably picked up that I am a huge fan of DC’s line of animated films.  Although I have been critical of some, as a whole the entire line of films have set a standard in comic book adaptations that is hard to surpass.  It has been often said by many of the writers here that if Warner Bros. could put that kind of quality film making into their live action comic book movies, they would be beating Marvel Entertainment by leaps and bounds.  Sadly, that’s not how it is and the true upside is that twice a year we are treated to at least two new animated films from DC.  So now that that is out of the way, let’s get to the real meat and potatoes of this review.

As a rule so far, the Superman films have not been my favorites, with the exception of All Star Superman, I found them to be lacking quite a bit.  It seems that only when paired with Batman or teamed up with the Justice League does Superman really have a chance to shine.  There is a new exception to that…Superman Unbound.  Although far from perfect, Superman Unbound does score quite high on my personal list of best DC animated films.  And even though I was not a fan of the animation style I saw in the trailer, it did not matter to me in the end.

The story was based on a 2008 story arc written by Geoff Johns; Superman: Brainiac.  If you are a fan of DC Comics, you know that Johns can tell a story and it comes through perfectly.  The script written by Bob Goodman adapts Johns’ original story quite nicely particularly the portrayal of Brainiac, voiced by Fringe star John Noble.  Animated to look almost Borg-like in appearance, along with Noble’s voice acting, the character of Brainiac was truly sinister and frightening, a true match for Superman and a far departure from the Brainiac we’ve seen in Superman The Animated Series, Justice League and Justice League Unlimited.  The cold and calculating machine is replaced with a fearsome human quality that Noble performs perfectly.

Aside from John Noble the other voice talent in this film, which the producers have a knack of bringing a unique list of talent to all of the films, is surprisingly well done.  Matt Bomer (White Collar) and Stana Katic (Castle) do justice to the characters of Clark Kent/Superman and Lois Lane.  Although I was not all that pleased with the appearance of Lois Lane.  Though she was voiced beautifully by Katic, her look reminded me of a woman trying to look much younger than she is.  Whether intentional or not, the psuedo-goth look Lois was sporting wasn’t at all like Lois Lane, but more like The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.  For me it was Molly Quinn‘s (Castle) portrayal of Kara Zor-El/Supergirl that was really excellent in the film.  For that matter, Supergirl’s entire presence made me enjoy this film so much.

Quinn’s Supergirl was neither as shy nor as innocent as you would think her to be.  Supergirl takes on the role of badass superhero and a darker shadow to her cousin Superman quite well.  Her introduction in the opening sequence of the film was pure magic and actually had me talking to the screen more than once.  I know for certain that I let slip a “oh no, now you’re in for it” when the bad guys try to flee from a determined Supergirl.  A teenage girl with angst and superpowers is not to be trifled with.

Overall this was another feather in the cap of DC and Warner Bros.  I was skeptical at first due to my disappointment in past solo Superman films, but I found myself enjoying it immensely and would definitely recommend it to the uninitiated.  In writing this review I realized that Superman Unbound is the 16th in the series of stand alone films with hopefully no end in sight anytime soon.  Additional voice talent includes Frances Conroy, Wade Williams, Diedrich Bader, Stephen Root and Alexander Gould.

The Nerd gives Superman Unbound – 4 out of 5

5 Comics Not to Miss This Week – Mar. 6th 2013

The X-Men and their never-ending time-travel drama continues, the Superman family may or may not experience a life-changing event, Ultron gets an upgrade in threat level, and Dr. Fate gets an upgrade—period—in this week’s 5 Comics Not to Miss This Week.

xmen
All-NEW X-MEN #8

The adventures of the time-displaced X-Men continue, and things are sure to heat up. When we last left off, young Cyclops met Mystique for the first time, and she was up to her usual manipulative no-good. How will their interaction affect the other X-Men, both young and old? Hard to say, and we may not find out the answers in this issue, as the solicitations tease that the Avengers make a guest appearance in issue #8. How will their involvement change things for our merry, confused, tortured mutants? There’s only one way to find out. Read it!

earth2EARTH 2 #10

The new Dr. Fate’s origin will likely come to bear in this issue, and it could be intriguing if writer James Robinson plays his cards right. After all, this is our first real glimpse into the retelling of one of DC’s most famous and powerful magic users. The New 52′s revamp of the Justice Society provides DC’s storytellers with an excellent opportunity to “update” classic characters, like Dr. Fate, who is DC’s version of Dr. Strange. Let’s see what the new, and possibly improved, Dr. Fate will be like.

helonearthSUPERMAN #17

The “H’El on Earth” crossover concludes this issue, and hopefully, it’ll be worth it. Admittedly, “H’El on Earth” hasn’t been the jaw-dropping, earth-shattering crossover that it could have been for the Superman family. It has spanned the Superman, Supergirl, and Superboy titles for months, and so far, it has seemed pretty… ordinary. So why is its conclusion one of the 5 comics not to miss this week? Because of all the issues in this crossover, the final one is the one that’s most likely to have the storyline’s best scene. Will something happen that shakes the dynamic between Superman, Supergirl, and Superboy to their core? Or will it be a lackluster finale that changes absolutely nothing for any of their characters? Chances are, it will be the former.

avengersAVENGERS #7

What’s the White Event? What’s so special about Captain Universe? How hard sci-fi can series writer Jonathan Hickman take a team like the Avengers in a storyline? And, most importantly, whose food will Spider-Man eat next even though they don’t want him to? All these questions will likely be answered in Avengers #7 this week and in future issues! Hickman’s cerebral take on the team contains a dash of humor and fish-out-of-water interaction as traditional heroes like Spider-Man clash with outsiders like Sunspot and Cannonball. Seeing people who don’t usually communicate band together is a sight to behold, and Hickman’s style of storytelling is interesting and engaging.

ultron
AGE OF ULTRON #1

Marvel’s next big crossover event starts here. Ultron is one of the Avengers’ deadliest and most persistent adversaries, and now he’s apparently threatening other heroes too, so Marvel’s given him an upgrade, of sorts. It’s kind of a big deal for a villain to jump from being one team’s problem to being a problem for the entire superhero universe that team resides in. Will Age of Ultron be as interesting as Secret Invasion or Civil War? This week, we’ll find out.

Wayne’s Comics: Episode 84

Gianluca Glazer, Deathmatch, Paul Jenkins, Inhumans, BOOM! Studios, Dragonfly, Wayne's Comics, Wayne Hall It’s the 84th episode of the Wayne’s Comics podcast, and it features the return of Michael Alan Nelson, one of my favorite comics creators! He’s got a lot of projects coming you should know about, including Supergirl for DC and The Orphans for BOOM! Studios. He also talks about a comic I already miss, Valen [...]

DC Sends the Superman Family to ‘H’El’ for Their First New 52 Crossover

Here we are, about a year into the New 52 universe, and Superman, Supergirl, and Superboy have yet to join forces in their own crossover. In fact, Superboy and Superman haven’t even met yet.

Well, come November, DC’s changing that in the ‘H’el on Earth’ crossover that spans the #14 issues of the Superman, Supergirl, and Superboy books.

According to the DC Comics blog, an alien of unknown Kryptonian origin comes gunning for Superboy, which pits him and the other Supers against the villain, named H’el, who debuts in Superman #13 in October.

Apparently, H’el’s “not only more powerful than Superman, but is also smarter than Supergirl and more lethal than Superboy. How will Superman combat a threat of this magnitude?” Or at least, that’s what the press release on the blog post says. But it’s a given that, since this a superhero storyline, our favorite Kryptonian good guys will find a way to prevail, as superheroes often do.

Here’s a quick creative team rundown:

  • Superboy #14 (on sale November 14), written by Tom DeFalco and illustrated by R.B. Silva and Rob Lean,
  • Supergirl #14 (on sale November 21), written by Mike Johnson and illustrated by Mahmud Asrar, and
  • Superman #14 (on sale November 28), written by Scott Lobdell and illustrated by Kenneth Rocafort.

Will this be the family reunion Superboy needs?

The most interesting part of this storyline for me will be the character interplay between the Supers, especially Superboy.

In our latest DC Confidential podcast on August 9, we brought up poor Kon-El’s sorry state of affairs in the current DCU. He’s a half-Kryptonian clone who’s been rapidly aged into his teenaged years even though he’s only a few months old. He knows nothing of his origin, and he’s trying to fit into normal Earth society, and he’s doing it in near isolation. Sure, he’s got the Teen Titans now, but he’s just met them, and he doesn’t hang out with many of them on his personal time. He needs Superman to help him out, and it’s about time they met.

And the meeting can’t come soon enough as far as the Word of the Nerd’s Jason Padua’s concerned. Jason put poor Superboy on blast on the podcast for being an uninteresting character post-New 52. In his opinion, Kon-El needs something in the storyline to make him more interesting, and meeting Superman might be what does it.

I agree that meeting Superman and being officially introduced and absorbed into the Super family will help Kon, but I don’t agree that Superboy has been uninteresting in the New 52. Superboy was a favorite character of mine in his Project Cadmus days before the relaunch, and he’s become a favorite character of mine again since the relaunch. I like the fish-out-of-water clone aspect of him, and he seems more intellectual these days than he’s been portrayed in the past.

Yet, his current origin as a clone being raised and manipulated by a mysterious scientific organization puts him on more dangerous and psychologically damaging footing than he was on before. In the old days, Project Cadmus was a better influence. It wasn’t perfect or anything, but Kon had Dubbilex, Guardian, and the Cadmus personnel to help guide him — much better than those N.O.W.H.E.R.E. maniacs he’s dealing with these days.

I’m confident that this crossover will be the beginning of Superboy’s indoctrination into the Super universe proper and the stable (for comics anyway) support group that he desperately needs.

Geeky Wardrobe Woes

So, as you all know by now, a month ago I gave birth to my daughter (Girlygeek2.0/GG2.0) who has since taken over every aspect of my life in the most wonderful of ways. With that in mind, is it any surprise that this post is using her as the primary focus?

Anywho, as parents (geek parents to be precise), hubby and I are constantly keeping our eyes open for anything remotely geek oriented and designed for children any time we go shopping. Don’t misunderstand me, we’re not planning on forcing GG2.0 to be a geek; rather, we’re trying to show her (yes, even at this young age) that it’s okay to be one. It’s okay to like comic books and video games as well as fantasy and scifi. Knick-knacks, DVDs and toys aren’t a problem to find, but clothing…

That’s where we see a distinctive lack of encouragement for girls to pursue the geeky and nerdy wonders that life has to offer.

Case in point, a couple weeks ago, hubby went to Walmart to pick up a few things that we needed. But while he was there, he ambled over to the children’s section (as we both do now regardless of whether we’re shopping for GG2.0 on that particular trip or not), and proceeded to look through the girls clothing in the hopes of finding something comic book or otherwise superhero-related to bring home to his little girl.

I don’t need to tell you that he was rewarded with not one single thing.

However, as he passed the boys section, he came across quite the plethora of superhero-themed clothing and he thereby grabbed a Batman-themed tank top and shorts set. Naturally, because it is in point of fact a boy’s outfit, it looks like a boy’s outfit. When you look at it, there’s no mistaking that it was designed with boys in mind.

Now, don’t misunderstand me…

I don’t have a problem with GG2.0 wearing a boy’s outfit. Seriously, I was a tomboy as a child and even now as an adult, I’m what hubby affectionately calls ‘fella-girly’. Basically, I LOVE shoes and all things cute and fluffy…but I throw like a boy and love movies like The Godfather and The Terminator. But aside from that, with the exception of one shirt I got at SDCC, all of my geeky shirts are from the boys/men’s section of stores because unless I’m shopping online, there are no geeky girl shirts to be found. Not even my comic book shop carries them, I’m very sad to say, and it’s through no fault of their own because it’s simply the way of things…boys get clothing emblazoned with beloved super heroes while girls are forced to wear clothing with Disney princesses.

Keep in mind that I have no quarrel with the Disney princesses (Belle is my favorite because as a fellow bookworm, I can relate to her), but I am however annoyed at the fact that little girls are told from a young age through fashion that comic book heroes are only for boys.

I’m sorry…are clothing companies unaware of Wonder Woman, Batgirl and Supergirl?! How about Storm, Rogue or Black Widow? And those are just to name a few…there’s PLENTY more where that came from.

Clothing companies should take into account that there are in fact female comic book heroes and emblazon a few of them across the clothing they design for girls…and not just of the child variety, but of the adult variety as well.

The clothes don’t even have to be comic book related…

Seriously how adorable would it be to have little girl shirts with chibi Chewbaccas, chibi Ninja Turtles, or Adiposes on the front? What’s an Adipose? Just look below…

Adorable, right???

Seriously…what’s it going to take before clothing companies realize that girls can and often do like the same thing as boys?

Comic Movies That Should Be Made And Who Should Play The Hero

Everyone loves a good comic book movie, right?

Everyone would love to see more of them, right?

Well, the two major studios, DC and Marvel, tend to stick to their A-team where movies are concerned, as they are the ones guaranteed to make the money. But, I can’t be the only one that would love to see some secondary/side characters get a movie outing and that got me to thinking. When I’m rich and famous, who am I going to cast as some of my favourite heroes for their very own movie outing?

So, have a look at what I came up with and see what you think.

Marvel

X23

X-23 – For the lovely, ex-prostitute clone of Wolverine I have ex-lover of a young Superman, Kristin Kreuk. I love X-23 and a movie of her solo comics would be awesome.

Luke Cage.1

Luke Cage – For the hero for hire I put forward 2 Fast 2 Furious star Tyrese Gibson. Cage is a cool character and would make for an interesting lead.

Miss Marvel

Miss Marvel – For Marvels leading lady, I think Amber Heard would do more than suit the roll. She is smoking hot and can easily give the attitude and leadership of the character.

Captian Britain

Captain Britain – Captain America gets a film so why not us? This dude needed to be British and I think the I Am Number Four star, Alex Pettyfer, would suit the role nicely.

Wasp.1

Wasp – Now, she’s probably going to appear in the upcoming Ant-Man movie, but I’m getting in first with Olga Kurylenko, ex James Bond star.

MoonKnight.1

Moon Knight – Johnny Depp would be great as the hero who encompasses all of the best Avengers in one messed up head. You could do some cool stuff with a Moon Knight movie and Depp does weird very well!

DC

The DC universe is a bit more challenging. Everyone wants a JLA movie and I think some of the others I’ve chosen could be in the works or planned for the future, but here we go.

Wonder Women

Wonder Women – There may be a bit of an age difference, but I think you can forgive me for that, seeing as it’s Sandra Bullock that I have for DCs leading lady.

Flash

Flash – I think that Dexter front man Michael C. Hall would be an excellent candidate for the fastest man alive. He’s an excellent actor and he would certainly be able to handle all that super hero angst that movie makers are so fond of.

Supergirl.1

Supergirl – We know she can sing and dance, and she can defiantly rock a mini skirt, but I think that Glee star Dianna Agron has the talent and the innocence to give the cousin of Superman a big screen outing.

Aquaman.1

Aquaman – We know he can kick some ghost ass, but can he talk to fish? Jensen Ackles would be great as one of DC’s most underrated heroes.

Batgirl.1

Batgirl – It wold be interesting to see a more serious take on this character and I think the lovely and funny Amy Adams could do a great job.

Cyborg

Cyborg – Can you smell something? Oh, it must be what The Rock is cooking with his handy lasers as Cyborg!

I know that some of these have been cast in the past, either on TV or in movies, but I think they would all be good as the lead in a future big screen outing. Feel free to let me know if you think a different actor could do better!

But, with respect, you’re wrong.

Marvel NOW! Announcement

Entertainment Weekly just broke a story in their Comic-Con edition about a new initiative from comics publisher Marvel beginning in October. Marvel NOW! is a line-wide launch (or relaunch) of the Marvel Universe, and Editor in Chief Axel Alonso is quoted as saying:

“This ain’t no reboot, it’s a new beginning!”

There aren’t many details yet, but we do have three confirmed titles from the article, launching at the end of the year. From the iFanboy piece on the announcement.

  • Uncanny Avengers - written by Rick Remender, artist unknown – Shipping in October,  a direct spinoff from Avengers vs. X-Men, Remender says “It’s a bridge book, something that can delve into both worlds”
  • All New X-Men - written by Brian Michael Bendis, artist unknown – Shipping in November, the rumors of Bendis taking over the X-Men appear to be true. We saw an image of Jean Grey yesterday, and it appears that is indeed her as Bendis uses time travel to bring the original five X-Men to the present day as Bendis describes, “It’s not a time travel story like Back to the Future. It’s a time travel story like Pleasantville
  • Avengers - written by Jonathan Hickman, artist unknown – Shipping in December, Hickman picks up the Avengers reins from Bendis has he expands the scope of The Avengers. Hickman is quoted as saying, “It’s not six Avengers, it’s 18 or more”.  The new title will be bi-weekly and will be a combination of one-shot stories and longer, “galaxy spanning multi-issue arcs” as they protect the entire universe and become an Avengers for the 21st century.

Let me be the first to say, and I say this as a non-comic book reader but not for a lack of trying: here we go again.

Much like DCs New 52 initiative, this project is going to promise big things for those already invested in the comics as well as for those trying to break into the worlds these comics bring to readers every month. And just like the New 52, it’s going to fall far short of actually doing that.

Yes, the New 52 brought some great titles to the table that actually did what they promised and wiped away years of continuity. Aquaman, Supergirl, and the Justice League are all heroes or groups that got fresh starts, and there were some new heroes that made their first appearance, such as the African superhero Batwing, a part of the Batman Inc. line.

But many of the other stories proved to be just as dense and hard to get into as before. I personally grabbed a couple of the Batman issues, ready to get re-introduced to the character and was quickly disappointed and then frustrated when I found out that not only was this not a “fresh look” at the Batman character, but that the years of continuity and issues he had dealt with were still there. All they had really done in some of these issues were to start a new story arc and slap a #1 on the cover. And let’s not even get into the Batgirl debacle.

I fear this is where Marvel is headed with their “relaunch.”

Let’s take a walk down “What if?” lane for a minute. What would Marvel be risking with a line-wide reboot? Fans groaning? They’re already doing that even before this “relaunch” and are going to be doing it more in the coming weeks and months. So you upset some fans. Not much new there.

But who wouldn’t be stoked about being able to pick up X-Men #1 and having it be the beginning of the X-Men story for this day and age? How many more people would be willing to grab some issues and get into comic books with a “real” continuity wipe? Yes, it might just be a temporary fix to a bleeding wound when and if sales drop back to the numbers before the reboot, but isn’t it worth a try?

Hell, even a trial run. Just say, “we’re going to release a trial run of several of our core characters, completely rebooted and ready for a brand new reader.” See how it’s received. Go from there based on that data.

After all, it’s not like they haven’t been doing that with several of their big name characters on the big screen for the past couple of years.

I’m keen to hear your thoughts. Is this viable? Is this something that you’d like to see?

And as for the “relaunch/reboot?” Let’s just call it what it is at the moment – a publicity stunt.

Superman group August solicitations

Here are the August solicits from DC Comics for Superman and Superman related titles. I myself have just started collecting the new Superman books and I am very pleased with them so far.  With so many titles coming out of the D.C. New 52 series, it’s really difficult to choose the ones I want to buy, but so far I’m sticking with the main flagship characters.  We’ll see what happens later on down the road, they all look really interesting and I’m sure as the year goes by, I will be asking my local comic shop to hold more and more for me. Okay, let’s get to it.  The Superman group is comprised of five books which are Action Comics #12, Superman # 12, Superman Annual # 1, Superboy # 12, and las,t but certainly not least, Supergirl # 12.

Feature – Comic Wallpaper Of The Day

Yes I know, there hasn’t been a wallpaper posted in at least a week.  You can blame me…I suck.  Nevertheless we are back with a couple of new wallpapers today.  I am feeling a little strange today, so my choices of wallpapers are probably going to reflect my mood.  It’s Friday and I am in a relatively good mood and rather wired thanks to the extra-large energy drink I just sucked down.  I am also excited that next week I will be getting a brand new iPad 3 to replace my first gen iPad.  I am slowly becoming an Apple convert, much to Jason Padua’s dismay.

Earth 2 Sketches: Supergirl

Supergirl Earth 2

The New 52 “Second Wave” initiative, slated to hit shelves in May, will be delving into new storylines and taking our beloved heroes into some very new territory with the addition of a parallel world. It also means new costumes for your favorite heroes and heroines!!  Kevin Maguire has released his sketches for Supergirl and they are wow!

“Superman’s cousin loves her adopted world with a passion, seeing how the people of Earth have adopted her and taken her to their hearts,” said EARTH 2 writer James Robinson. “She is the definitely brightest light among this first group of Earth 2 heroes.”

“Meet the Earth 2 Supergirl, aka Karen Starr,” said WORLDS’ FINEST editor Wil Moss. “As readers of MISTER TERRIFIC already know, Karen has been busy since she arrived on the main DCU Earth, creating a successful company and dating the brilliant Michael Holt. But what are her true motives behind those actions? How did she get here? And what incident prompts her to take up her new identity of Power Girl? Find out in WORLDS’ FINEST #1!”

Karen’s new look really pops off the page. I love how the ‘S’ was enlarged to cover her entire chest and up to her shoulders.  The gloves are a nice subtle touch as well as taking the collar up the neck.  Course Supergirl wouldn’t be herself without legs that go for days clad in boots made for kicking evil in the noggin.  What do you think of this new look for her?  Are you loving it?

If you pay attention at all to this site, you’ll notice we are really big DC Comics fans here.  We don’t intentionally ignore or neglect other comic publishers, but our love and attention always seems to swing toward DC Comics.  Believe it or not, I do buy Marvel and comics from other publishers, but the deck is always stacked.  So you probably noticed the majority of our reviews and previews are from publishers other than DC Comics.  I have found out that fair and balanced actually means something in this line of work.  Just the mere hint of favoritism is uncomfortable to me.  So I try to balance things out as much as I can.  I take the image of Word of the Nerd very seriously and at times I will admit that  I am a bit over protective of it.  Integrity in this business is something I also take very seriously and that goes along with our reputation as journalists.  Some would argue that we aren’t journalists.  I take issue with that.  Perhaps not in the strictest sense of the word by today’s standards, but I believe that each of us here are journalists.  Just because we happen to be fans of our particular field doesn’t make us any less credible.  I believe it makes us more passionate and eager to maintain our journalistic integrity.

Feature – Comic Wallpaper Of The Day

It’s Super Bowl Sunday.  To a lot of hardcore nerds out there, this day is completely meaningless.  But there are a lot of us who consider ourselves nerds (proudly) and still appreciate sports and other non-nerd things.  I for one am a life-long football fan and I look forward to days like this.  The Super Bowl is a big deal in American culture.  I look forward to watching the game with an equal amount of excitement and sadness.  The sadness revolves around the end of the NFL Football season.  Another part of the sadness revolves around the fact that my team isn’t in this year’s game, such is life I suppose.  That’s one of the great things about being a nerd in this day and age.  Nerds aren’t looked down on as we once were.  A point that I always maintained is that there is a little nerd in everyone, it is one of the slogans of this very website.  There is a heaping helping of truth in that statement.  Nerds are considered cool now, and people are no longer ashamed to show off their nerdiness.  To those of us who have always known this day would come, I say, “Bravo my friends, we made it!”

Today’s wallpaper is courtesy of…well that isn’t exactly known.  I found this little gem on the interwebs.  It’s by the late Michael Turner and there is a certain amount of irony in that.  My brother was named Michael Turner as well, and he tragically lost his life to lung cancer a year ago.  We had his funeral exactly a year ago this Monday.  He was a huge football fan and he missed one of the days he looked forward to the almost every year…Super Bowl Sunday.  So this post and this wallpaper is dedicated to my big brother Mike.  I miss you so much!

So if I intentionally step on some toes for posting this, I want to give full credit to the source, whomever that is.  I used your wallpaper.

Feature – Comic Wallpaper Of The Day

I rather enjoy these daily wallpaper pieces.  It gives me a change to write up something really quick about the status of things here at Word of the Nerd or about what’s on my mind at that particular moment.  I have been working hard on the website, recruiting for new writers and recording our very first podcast.  Oh yeah, we have our own podcast now…I think I mentioned that yesterday.  It will be live in the next few days so keep checking back.  I am rather proud of the work we’ve done over a very short period of time.  I am really lucky to have a such a fine group of people on the staff who do so much work in their spare time to ensure Word of the Nerd is successful.  Without them and of course without you, our loyal readers, none of this would be possible.  If there is anything you think we could be doing better or just something you particularly like, please post a comment and let us know.
