McKellen and Stewart Confirmed for Days of Future Past

In one fell tweet director of the forthcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past, Bryan Singer, solidified the frustratingly confusing timeline of the X-Men movie universe by confirming that Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Patrick Stewart would be reprising their roles as Erik Lensherr/Magneto and Charles Xavier/Prof. X. The two will be joining their younger counterparts Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy in one of the more well-known X-Men comic book storylines involving a plot that will result in a future where mutants are nearly hunted to extinction by Sentinel robots created in the wake of anti-mutant hysteria brought on by the very event The X-Men are trying to stop.

So I’m a details person. I like continuity within franchises because, if I’m going to believe that characters exist within a grounded reality, I need to know that the reality is consistently maintained. The X-Men movies spit in the face of all that by loosely tying their movies together through the use of the same actors in specific roles instead of, say, getting their stories straight. The first three X-Men movies laid the foundation for the X-Men universe on film (even if X-3 got everything wrong except for the concept of the mutant cure and Beast), but X-Men Origins: Wolverine started taking some liberties with the continuity in terms of how Logan got into the Weapon X program as established in X-2 and his interactions with other mutants he’d supposedly already met yet all seemed to have forgotten they met him when he was the one who lost his memory. Sabertooth and Cyclops come to mind – but Cyclops was blindfolded at the time, what’s Sabertooth’s excuse? X-Men: First Class was an opportunity to reboot the franchise by starting at the very beginning…which got mucked up by ignoring plot points from the previous films and using cameos from Hugh Jackman and Rebecca Romijn that locked the movie into the same continuity and created even more problems. How can Emma Frost be an adult in the 1960′s and a teenager in the 1980s? Why is Cyclops’ younger brother in the first class when Xavier stated in the first X-Men film that Scott, Jean, and Storm were among his first students? Why does Beast look like a nightmarish Furby with glasses?

Obviously I have a lot of time to think about these things.

There are, however, some positives that could come from this…sequel? If it involves the younger Charles and Magneto, then it’s still a prequel, but the sequel to the prequel. But if we also have the older versions, then does that make the movie a sequel to the original three X-Movies? Arrrgh! My head hurts. Positives! Focus on the positives. Right, so, one of the big positives is that we have four talented and amazing actors playing the two most important characters of the X-Men Universe. Sorry, Wolvie fans. In the first three movies, McKellen and Stewart embodied Magneto and Prof. X in such a way that fans couldn’t imagine anyone else playing them. Though skeptical of Fassbender and McAvoy’s casting in the beginning, they proved to be the strongest parts of X-Men: First Class. So much so that I really wish the entire movie had just been about young Erik and Charles going on mutant adventures! So, at the least, we know that some of the acting will be top notch!

The secondary positive is that Days of Future Past involves time travel and alternate realities…kinda. Written by Chris Claremont in 1981, the storyline involved an older Kitty Pryde transferring her mind from the future into her past self to stop the assassination of Senator Robert Kelly. Considering we already met Senator Kelly in the first X-Men movie, and he died, there may be some kajiggering of the plot. Then again, this is the X-Men, so why wouldn’t Kelly be a young senator in the 60′s/70′s and then a middle aged man in the year 2000? Which brings us back to the positive of this particular storyline. A useful crutch in comic books to fix certain “problems” that arise from continuity errors, time travel and alternate realities have already been utilized as a means of explaining rebooted franchises. Think JJ Abram’s Star Trek. Same characters in an alternate reality that doesn’t negate the old timeline established in the old series and the movies. Days of Future Past could explain some of the more blatant continuity errors in the X-franchise while telling an intriguing story about actions and consequences, racism, hysteria, and blah-blah-blah just get to the Sentinels already!

We won’t really know how the movie will play out until a synopsis appears on the internet. Maybe the whole X-franchise will be revealed as a dream and we’ll find Bobby Ewing in the shower acting like nothing’s changed…now I made myself sad (R.I.P. Larry Hagman). But, for the time being, we know that at least Magneto and Prof. X are secure in their past and future selves. How it all fits together is anybody’s guess, but hopefully Singer will fix this broken machine.

Update: In news that will surprise no one, Hugh Jackman may be in talks to reprise his role as Wolverine/Logan according to The Hollywood Reporter. Given that Old Man Logan is right there on the well-known cover to Days of Future Past, and the fact that Jackman has been in every X-Men film thus far…probably a safe bet.

Adventure Time #7 is a Great Time

If you don’t frequent Cartoon Network or have any cool kids in your life,  I am going to to do you a solid and let you know right now you need to be watching the Pendleton Ward created Adventure Time on Cartoon Network.  Adventure Time may be one of the best adult nerd friendly children’s cartoons of all time.  Taking place in a post-apocalyptic world called the Land of Ooo, you’ll find Jake the talking dog who serves as mentor and fellow adventurer to 14 year old human, Finn.  Jake and Finn’s friends are Princess Bubblegum, Wildberry Princess who has the occasion assassin after her, a goth rock moody vampire named Marceline, and villains like the Ice King.  And yes, there are adventures galore! And lucky for us, those adventures are now in comic book form now, published by KaBoom! (the children’s division of BOOM! Studios).

Adventure Time #7 features FOUR cover options, a story that can stand alone, and two bonus short stories. Cover A by Chris Houghton with colors by Kassandra Heller, my favorite – cover B by Jason Ho, cover C by Graham Annable, and cover D by Franco. The story is written by Ryan North with art by Shelli Paroline and Braden Lamb with letters by Steve Wands.  The two shorts are “Time Waits for No One” written and illustrated by Shannon Wheeler (creator of Too Much Coffee Man), and “Lumpy Space Drama” written and illustrated by Zac Gorman.

In #7 Jake is trying to fix Princess Bubblegum’s time machine and even utters the phrase dearest to Whovian hearts -”Timey wimey.” But of course, Jake being who he is (inspired by Bill Murray’s Meatballs character), he has to mess with time and we all know how that kind of behavior can have repercussions.  The results of Jake’s antics are a janked timeline that is not math, as Jake and Finn might say. Read Adventure Time #7 and find out what BMO is up to, if Jake and Finn learn to be more observant, and find out who exactly Queebles is.

“Time Waits For No One” features various philosophies, with apologies to Ray Bradbury and others, on time explained by Princess Bubblegum.  And  “Lumpy Space Drama”, well, that one is not as much crazy fun, but it does end the adventure on a moody, funny note kids may miss but adults will understand.

I just can’t say it enough, this comic book is one to make a trip to your local comic book store to grab off the shelf with great flourish.  You will read it from cover to cover again and again, and chuckling while the person next to you thinks you’ve lost your mind.  Heck, if you’re like me, you’ll be doing the voices and reading the painted signs aloud.

Release date, tomorrow August 22, 2012

Meme of the Week

The youth of today always seem to be coming up with new phrases and words that they like to throw around. Something that seems to be used a lot right now is YOLO. It means ‘You only live once’, and teenagers take this to mean ‘sit inside on Facebook and video games.’ I sound like an old man, god. I’m only 20.

Anyway, anger at the youth aside, YOLO doesn’t count for everyone. That’s right, everyone’s favorite time traveler has never heard, nor has need for, the expression. He regenerates and he still goes out and does more.

Kids aye?

Looper Trailer Time Travels to the Web

It seems Prometheus started quite a trend when they used teaser trailers, for actual trailers. Total Recall, The Avengers and Looper all following suit. But now, a full trailer for Looper has hit the web and the premise is staggering.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a looper, he explains during the trailer. They are a group of killers who assassinate people sent back in time by the mob. Time travel is illegal, meaning the only it’s only available on the black market and deaths in the past keep the mob out of trouble.

It all goes wrong for JGL though as his next assassination is his future self, played by Bruce Willis. He fails the kill and so begins a race against time to not only kill his future self, but avoid the mob killing his present self. Stay with me here. The trailer will explain it better. Have a watch.

The film looks like it may be one of the best sci-fi films this year. A twisting time travelling tale but backed up with a lot of meaty action. Bruce Willis also seems on top form, once again fighting for his life and isn’t it good to see him back in action?

The film also stars Emily Blunt, Jeff Daniels, Paul Dano and Piper Perabo. It’s directed by Rian Johnson.

Looper will be released on 28th September, it’s one I suggest you do not miss.

Virgin, BBC And Doctor Who

The BBC can sometimes be a little overprotective of its products, ensuring that they are theirs and theirs alone. When it comes to Doctor Who, this goes even further. Nobody else shall every touch it.

That’s why the BBC have demanded that Virgin kill a new advert that pushes its TiVo services in the UK. There doesn’t seem to be a connection at first, and even after you see the advert, there still really isn’t one but the BBC are taking on Virgin with everything they have.

The advert shows David Tennant sitting on a sofa browsing the service, even giving Doctor Who a bit of free advertising, and Richard Banson in the background fiddling with a time machine. Tennant doesn’t actually go in the time machine, but Branson does and returns as a younger version of himself. (Click the image for a full-size view!)

Seeing as Tennant played the Doctor for five years, and a time machine is featured in the advert, the BBC feel this more than enough for them to get a little upset, claiming that Virgin have stolen one of their properties.

In a statement they said: ”We should ensure that the BBC brand is not used to endorse outside companies or organisations. We can achieve this by ensuring commercial advertising, promotion and press releases by outside companies do not give the impression of BBC endorsement, and advertising does not ‘pass off’ BBC programmes.”

So far Virgin have fought back, claiming it’s “love of exploration” rather than coping Who.

This seems like quite a trivial matter to get involved with really, but what do you think? Are Virgin out of line or are BBC being overprotective? Check out the ad below and let me know.

Plot Point for Star Wars: Underworld Revealed

Darth Vader

Would a live-action Star Wars series ever work? This is the question that has been asked for years by members of the Star Wars fandom. Could George Lucas adapt his epic saga to the small screen and how could it happen with a live-action premise? Star Wars: The Clone Wars has been extremely successful, but a live-action series could engage more from the extended universe, or provde fans with something unique and original. Fans have been pining for this series for some time and it actually seems to be development!

Star Wars: Underworld is the title of this drama which is currently in development by George Lucas and crew. Picture this: Boardwalk Empire meets Star Wars. The Sopranos meets Star Wars. Yes, that’s absolutely correct: A gangster drama (ala The Godfather) in space, with bounty hunters. Really? The series, which may or may not even happen, has also been described as “Empire Strikes Back on steroids.” So, what’s all the fuss about then? Well, apparently the series will involve a “darker” side of the Star Wars universe, the underworld as it were, where criminal factions play a major part in the driving action.

In a post on Ain’t Cool News the following spoilers were posted. Disclaimer: Don’t read if you do not want this potential series to be spoiled.

One of the series’ first episodes will involve a group of  bandits acquiring the capability of time travel, and using it to travel back in time to stop Darth Vader from ever existing.

Okay, so, if someone was to go back in time and stop Darth Vader, then would that destroy the Star Wars universe as we know it? And what about the lore of Star Wars: The Old Republic? It seems that time travel exists in the Star Wars extended universe, but as it stands, we’ve not seen it implemented in the movies. So what if they do destroy Vader in, say, the first episode of the series. Would Lucas seriously reset the entire timeline? What would become of the franchise. Of course, this is all purely speculation at this point, but is the new 3D rendering the first step in completely remaking the Star Wars brand?

What are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments!

Bringing out the inner nerd in everyone!
