The Clone Wars Isn’t Done Just Yet

Depending on what Star Wars camp you’re in you either love or hate the Clone Wars. The animated TV series takes place between Episodes 2 and 3 of the Star Wars Saga and charts the three odd years of the intergalactic civil war that played a pivotal role in Darth Sidious’ plan for ultimate domination. Now, if you’re a fan of the series you would have been upset to hear that the Disney takeover of Lucas Film spelled the end for the cartoon action after 5 series, but it would appear that it’s not over.

star_wars_the_clone_wars_background_wallpaper

If you’re unfamiliar with the Clone Wars TV series, and as a Star Wars fan you really should be, the series followed the adventures of the good guys and bad guys through the Clone Wars! (Not just a clever title) Taking us through battles, strategies, blockades, trade negotiations and tax hikes that span the entire Star Wars universe and introduced a lot of great new characters, as well as keeping us in touch with some of the universes favourites, the series came to an end after five full seasons. But now it would seem that we are not quite done with war time adventures just yet.

The Jedi have been fighting a war with an army that was commissioned by one of their own, Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas. But who was Sifo-Dyas, and what happened to him? The dark lord of the Sith has woven an intricate web to ensnare the Jedi, but it is not full-proof and sometimes a small clue, and a bit of chance, can lead to the unraveling of the best-laid plans.

Those are the words of Clone Wars Supervising Director Dave Filoni, dropping hints around where the cartoon is heading and some of the questions yet to be answers (He was talking to the USA Today, for more and a sneak peek at some unseen footage click HERE). When the announcement was made about the cartoon coming to an end it was revealed that there were a good few hours of footage that had already been made hanging around and plenty of other stories still in the works that haven’t yet been made. It’s not yet clear if the show will continue on another channel or straight to DVD but it’s clear that they’re coming.

Right, time to flex that Star Wars muscle!

Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas

Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas

Filoni hinted at one of the major story lines centring around Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas, the Jedi who supposedly ordered the creation of the Clone army to serve the Jedi and protect the Republic. In Episode 2: Attack of the Clones it is understood that Master Dyas was presumed dead 10 years prior to the events in the movie. Also in the movie it is revealed that the template for the Clone army was a Mandalorian Bounty Hunter by the name of Jango Fett. Fett tells Obi-Wan that he was recruited for the assignment by a Lord Tyrannus, not Sifo-Dyas. Here is where things get interesting, and extra nerdy, Lord Tyrannus is the name given to Count Dooku after his fall to the Dark Side of the Force. Meaning that the creation of the Clone army was engineered from the beginning for the destruction of the Jedi and Sifo-Dyas was merely another porn in the Emperors great end game.

Now, here is where it gets tricky. If you follow the extended universe then the creation of the Clone wars goes deeper than that. It tells us that each of the Clone batches is developed for a specific task. Some are simple fighters with less intellect and more obedience all the way up to the top flight troopers, the ARC (Advanced Recon Commando) troopers, that are basically straight clones of Jango, with all of the Mandalorians battle skill and cunning. These ARC troopers are assigned to each Jedi as a second in command, meaning each Jedi basically had his own Jango following him around at all times. Jango Fett was most famed for one thing, the killing of six Jedi with his bare hands at the Battle of Galidraan. So, when order 66 came through each Jedi was accompanied by their very own, highly skilled, Jedi killing Mo-Fo. Job done, perfect.

clone-wars-9

However, where the Clone Wars cartoon is concerned most of the story has changed. It would appear that all of the Clones are created equal and given different training to obtain their rank. This coupled with a number of other things could have a bearing on the story of Sifo-Dyas that we are about to see. They will have to handle it carefully though as there is no mention of the seemingly ill-fated Dyas in the third movie AND if Sifo-Dyas’ fate is discovered then surly it would lead to, or at least raise questions about the creation of the Clone Army that should make the Jedi think!

Duchess Satine Kryze

Duchess Satine Kryze

One of the other things that changed in the animated series was the current state of Mandalor. In the extended universe Mandalore was still a self-governed planet of worriers, all about honor and brotherhood. In the TV series Mandalore is now a pacifist world living in fear of the return of the Death Watch, a Mandalorian terrorist faction. This was both good and bad. The extended universe version was both the more exciting and interesting guise, but the cartoon version allowed us some more insight in to the character of Obi-Wan.  Turns out that good old Kenobi considered tending his resignation to the Jedi for the love of Satine Kryze, Duchess of New Mandalore, helping to humanize the Jedi Master and strengthen the bond between him and Anakin as master confides in former apprentice.

Ahsoka Tano

Ahsoka Tano

Another addition to the universe thanks to the series is the introduction of Anakin’s war time Padawan learner, Ahsoka Tano. Ahsoka’s introduction, as well as being a kick ass little Jedi, serves as more attachment for Anakin and a keenly felt loss that builds towards his final fall. At the end of season 5 of the Clone Wars the young Jedi walked away from it all. Accused of a crime that she didn’t commit the young Togruta turned her back on the order to walk off in to the sunset (Becoming a Dark Jedi, a trained force user that leans neither to the dark or the light, one would assume!). This leaves a lot of possibilities for her character to return, either later in the animated series or maybe even in Movie form!!!!

On the whole Star Wars The Clone Wars has done a lot of good for the franchise. For a start, Anakin is a hell of a lot less annoying then he is in the movies, which is a massive plus, and it has gone a long way in giving us more information surrounding his role as the Chosen One and his intended purpose in the force. It has helped us get to know a lot of brand new characters and learn more about some of the universes finest and gone on to introduce Star Wars to a new and younger fan base insuring ticket and DVD sales will be astronomical for years to come. I’m glad that the series is not yet done and am very much looking forward to what is coming next. There have also been hints at another animated series set in another timeframe in Star Wars history, no doubt that will mess up some more amazing books, but should be fun and as a fan of comics I’m used to things constantly changing and nothing really making any sense. It seems that everything is still very up in the air and nobody knows what’s going on since the Disney take over. I’m sure it’ll all sort itself out in time. Until then all that’s left for us hardcore fans to do is sit and s#@t ourselves about how bad they are going to screw up all of the movies that Disney are going to bang out in the next few years. *SIGH*

The WordSearch of the Nerd – Failed TV Shows Edition!

TV shows. We love our entertainment in bite sized, weekly servings. But some shows don’t make it more than one or two seasons (some not even to that, Day One for example, one of my favorites from last years upfronts never saw the light of day.) So today’s WordSearch of the Nerd features TV shows whose followings don’t believe they received a fair run . We proudly present The WordSearch of the Nerd – Failed TV Shows Edition!

The Walking Dead Continue To Take Over The World

So, you have a hit comic that is then made into an even more popular TV series, what do you do next?  Why not do as so many others have done before and make a magazine about your hit comic and TV series? Well that’s what the Walking Dead boys have gone and done.

wd-weekly-1a-logoLike almost every other series you can see or read, Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead released its official magazine last month to add to this ever-growing franchise. The magazine is said to feature cast and crew interviews and supply the reader with all they need to know about the comic or TV series, so if simply watching/reading them is not enough for you anymore, then this is the mag for you. Think of it as DVD special features you read that constantly updates on a monthly basis both in print and digital forms.

“This magazine will be your one-stop destination for all the news pertaining to the comic, TV show, video games, and whatever else exists in the ever-expanding Walking Dead universe!” – Robert Kirkman

wd-weekly-1a-logoWith the TV series into its massively popular third season and the comics just tipping over issue #100, this freight train full of rotting walking corpses shows no sign of slowing. But, if you think about it, we’ve seen it all before. There have been almost countless zombie apocalypse comics, movies, etc., so what makes this so different?

If you look at the franchise from a purely logical perspective there is nothing that makes this franchise stand apart from other recent zombie-based stuff. All are based on the survivor/group of survivors struggling to stay alive in a world gone dead, no real explanation for the outbreak of zombies, the survivors look for a safe haven, never finding any and going to extreme lengths to live. Take this simple formula and repeat to create your own hit zombie franchise. So again, why is this one so popular?

There is no doubt that both the comic and TV show are very well written with some great characters, but so were others that came before. The art in the books is incredible, but again, nothing new there. The actors in the TV series are all amazing and the likenesses to the comic characters is phenomenal, but this again is nothing new. I suspect that it was simply a case of coming out at the right time that catapulted this highly addictive franchise into the hearts and minds of millions, me among them. I have no doubt that this new addition will follow in this popularity.

Fanatical Fans, The Battles!!

fansEverything has fans. From wildlife, to trains, to pictures someone somewhere will love it and spend a healthy (or unhealthy depending on how you look at it) amount of time devoted to their chosen subject. Fans come in all shapes and sizes and tend to range from, ‘meh’ to ‘I would gladly step on my mother’s face to get the latest Harry Potter DVD.’ My point is everyone cares about something, whether it be sports or the dreaded Justin Bieber, they all have fans that have devoted their lives to the subject and will defend them at length.

Nerdy subjects take up a large portion of fanboy/girlness and have some of the most dedicated fans on the planet and that got us at WOTN thinking who has the most fans and the types of things us loveable geeks will go through for our passions. With this in mind I’m going to pit a number of the biggest Nerdy subjects against one another in a couple of popularity contests to see who comes out on top. Of course I will have an opinion on each of these subjects but I will attempt to remain subjective until the end. So, without further ado let’s get it on……………

Twilight vs. Harry Potter

versus_twilight_vs_harry_potter_xlarge

Teen literature is at an all-time high at the moment, but without doubt these two are the biggest. Don’t get me wrong, the Hunger Games trilogy is coming up fast and the fact that younger fans are quite fickle I imagine that in a couple of years we will be talking about two different franchises with no mention of them, but for now here we are. So let’s look at some stats

harry-potter-vs-twilight_240Harry Potter – 7 Books, 8 Movies, 2 theme parks, around 15 video games, more merchandise than you can shake a wand at and as a brand is worth an estimates £15 billion.

Twilight – 4 Books, 5 Movies, rumoured video game in production, Movies have grossed over £2 Billion worldwide with one still to come, Over 150 million books sold worldwide.

Alright, I admit it is a little unfair to compare the two. With just a few stats it is clear that the Potter franchise out does Twilight by almost three times. That’s mainly due to the fact there is so much more stuff available surrounding Potter. However that doesn’t mean the fans of Twilight are any less committed, case and point:-

But, having said that:-

However I think there is more to it than that. With Harry Potter, J.K Rowling has created an entirely new universe, behind our own, for her stories to take place in making the story possibilities endless, as if bringing the Star Wars universe to earth. As opposed to Twilight which is simply a softer look at a genre that is meant to terrify people.  The one thing Twilight has over Potter is the cast. Due to the fact that it was aimed more at a teen audience the cast was older and became sex symbols, whereas the stars of the Potter franchise were seen more as lovable child actors. But this has also been a bonus for Harry Potter as their world of witches and wizards is suitable for everyone, from the very young to the very old, boosting sales a ridiculous amount.

Winner: Harry Potter

My Thoughts

Twilight lost me when we saw the vampires sparkle in the sun whereas the Potter films/books just got better and better. I think this sums my feelings up on the subject nicely.

Harry-Potter-vs-Twilight-by-Stephen-King-e1311143812906

Don’t think Stephen King did say this, but hey.

Star Wars v. Star Trek

star-wars-vs-star-trek

Now, on to more important matters. This is an argument that has gone on since long before I was alive and I’m sure that goes for most of you reading this as well. Fans of these two franchises are some of the best and most dedicated in the business of fanaticism. The two subjects have a lot in common, both set in space, both full of English speaking aliens and both have their own internal arguments. In Star Trek, is it the original or the next generation? With Star Wars do you accept the prequels or not? Whatever fence you come down on, if you are into any of these two brands, the chances are you are very passionate about them.

wars-vs-trekStar Wars – First released in 1977, 6 Movies with a few spin offs, 1 TV series on to its 6th season with a live action series coming in a couple of years, Hundreds of books, more merchandise than you can hope to imagine, a ride at Disney world, an epic amount of video games.

Star Trek – First released in 1966, 2 main series with multiple seasons and 4 spin off (including animated) series each with many seasons, 11 movies with another out next year and they continue to be made, toys, conventions and books all connected to each series, at least 2 museums dedicated to props.

I think the two main differences between these two massively successful franchises are best summed up by this quote from the New York Times:-

Trek fandom revolves around technology because the Star Trek universe was founded on ham-fisted dialogue and Gong Show-caliber acting. But the fictional science has always been brilliant. The science in Star Wars is nonsense, and everyone knows it. But no one cares because Star Wars isn’t about science. It’s epic drama. It’s about those incredibly well-developed characters and the moral decisions they face. People don’t get into debates about how the second Death Star works. They get into debates about the ethics of blowing it up.

That to me sounds about right. As with Harry Potter, Star Wars does seem more accessible to a younger audience, explained best by the above quote. But this doesn’t make Star Trek any less popular or the fans any less nuts. Both sets of fans are more passionate and dedicated then any I have ever seen. Whether it be watching them in their various forms, dressing up or going as far as learning Klingon/Huttese they are always an interesting group that I am proud to be a part of, sometimes(more on that later). But due to the fans reaction to the prequel movies, the special editions and the spin offs/ extended universe………………

Winner – Star Trek

star-wars-vs-star-trek1My Thoughts

I’m a fan of both of these franchises but for me Star Wars wins, by a mile. You can cram your Phasers and Batelths up your arse, Lightsabers rule. This is where my crazy fandom kicks in as I love everything about Star wars, from the prequels, to the Clone Wars, to the extended universe, it’s all good. I have over 130 books from the extended universe, a display of six lightsabers on my wall and a bunch of other crap all over the show. Star Trek is good but can’t compete.

kapowComics

This is a massive field consisting of thousands of contributors each of which with their own dedicated and passionate fan following. People will travel miles and wait hours at conventions to meet their favourite creators, who I have to say are some of the nicest people you could hope to meet. Fans spend hours working on costumes of characters and creations from different universes as well as creating amazing works of fan fiction and art in homage to every book released. There is more than a lot to choose from, but for the purpose of this piece I am going to go with the obvious and biggest:-

Marvel v. DC

dc-comics_vs_marvel

I think it’s safe to say that everyone here at WOTN is a lover of comics. Between the members of staff here I think we pretty much cover every facet and genre of the comic book world but we all dip in to the DC and Marvel bags from time to time. Unlike the other subjects covered so far it seems completely socially acceptable to be a fan of both publishers, as well as any others, without being vilified by friends and family, but everyone does tend to have a favourite. So, on to a few stats:-

DC Entertainment – Founded in 1934 and is part of Warner Brothers, 33 live action movies(so far) based on DC characters, around 61 animated movies, 15 live action TV series with 6 in development, 36 animated series and loads of toys and clothing etc.

Marvel – Started as Marvel Mystery Comics in the early 1930s, now owned by Disney, 33 live action movies with 8 in production, 9 full length animated movies, 7 live action TV series with 4 in production, 32 animated series with 2 in production also loads of toys and clothes etc.

DC vs MarvelThese two massive entertainment brands are very much about keeping up with the Jones’ in everything they produce. Last year DCs New 52 were launched taking them above Marvel in profit and sales for the first time in six years. That spurred Marvel to announce Marvel Now and a complete rework of their universe. This year also saw the release of The Avengers movie that shot up to number tree in the list of biggest movies ever which in turn prompted DC to announce a Justice League movie and so on and so forth until we’re all dead.

As far as results go to date, in the way of movies Marvel win due to the way The Avengers was built up in amongst all of the other great movies, but in comics DC have it. AvX was good but the New 52, or some of them, have been a great hit. So…….

Winner: – Draw.

My Thoughts

I read a lot of book from both of these creators as I am very much mainstream in my comic taste, but my favourite is Marvel. For a lot of reasons I enjoy reading about the characters more and have loved pretty much all of the movie adaptation. That said I’m very much enjoying some of the New 52 books, mainly Batman and Justice league, and The Dark Knight trilogy are some of the best movies ever made. My main issue with DC is Superman. He is a great character and I love reading the books but when you have him why do you really need anyone else? He can be anywhere in a matter of seconds and is pretty much indestructible, there is no need for any other heroes. If he used his head he would make a lead suit, collect all of the Kryptonite on Earth and throw it in to the sun. Job done. Then all he needs to worry about is magic.

Summing Up

san_diego_comic_con_1I know there are many other things in the world of geekery that I could of used that are just as popular and have just as crazy fans. Dr Who, Buffy, Stargate, Firefly, the list is almost endless. But fans, are fans, are fans, they all have a lot in common. They love what they love and will argue until they pass out to protect their opinion on the subject. They will go out of their way to get the latest toy/book/DVD/game before anyone else. They will spend hundreds of money and hours to be part of a convention and to meet the biggest stars or creators and spend time with like-minded people. You will never find a better place on earth than a convention with thousands of people who love what you love.  In some ways it’s a lot like religion, but its cooler and you don’t have to kill or oppress people that don’t like the same thing as you.

Fandom is something that includes everyone no matter what race, sexuality, gender, fat, thin, young or old. It is a beautiful thing that unites people and for the most part is good. There is an ugly side however. Some people go too far. The biggest movie stars can’t walk down the street without being harassed and god forbid you make something that fans don’t approve of!!

large_jonas-run

Fans chase Jonas Brothers

This year Star Wars creator George Lucas announced that he was retiring from making big budget blockbuster movies. He was asked whether fan reaction to the prequels and the special editions had anything to do with his decision and he had this to say:-

Why would I make any more……… when everybody yells at you all the time and says what a terrible person you are?

This makes me sad on so many levels. For a start and before even to getting to any of the Star Wars stuff or whether you love or hate the guy this is a man doing what he loves and is passionate about at the very top level and has had to take a step back because people think they know better than him about his work. Sometimes people can go too far, especially on this subject. Fans have said that in doing the special editions of the original trilogy that he has ruined or messed with their childhood. For a start there would be no Star Wars in the first place without Lucas and secondly the movies are his and if he thinks that they need additions to make then closer to his original vision then it is up to him, no one else. I don’t know anyone that would leave anything they care about that much unfinished. As for the prequels, they are what they were meant and needed to be made to complete the Saga, so if you don’t like it then don’t watch them.

I guess my point is that it is possible to love or hate something and keep it to yourself. This is just one example, which I’m clearly very passionate about, of where fandom has worked in a negative way, making someone feel bad and costing us some possibly great movies/comics/TV that would have been produced in the future. While obsessive fandom is normally a positive thing and can do a lot of good do we really have the right to make people feel bad about their passions just because we don’t like or agree with them?

Nerd to Know #05: The Munsters vs. The Addams Family

Beverly Hills Cop Makes Jump To Small Screen

The proposed series has a similar fish-out-of-water setup and centers on Axel Foley’s blue-collar police officer son, Aaron, who helps take down the criminal elements of the rich and famous in Beverly Hills while trying to escape the shadow of his larger-than-life father.

Sound good so far? Well, thankfully, it gets better.

When you hear about movies being made in to TV series it’s normally a cause for concern. Someone buys the franchise and takes it in a completely different direction from where the films looked to be heading. The three Beverly Hills Cop movies were sheer 80s class with an amazing theme tune to boot (until those crazy frog w#@kers got hold of it). Following a Detroit cop with a big mouth Axel Foley who, for various reasons, finds himself in the midst of high society and investigating crimes in the heart of Beverly Hills. And, if the description above is to be believed, it would appear that we are in for a weekly dose of the same thing.

bhctrilogy

So, as far as I can find out the basic premise of the series sees Axel Foley’s son, Aaron, trying to escape from being in his father’s shadow by joining a police force (not a good start). Instead of patrolling the mean streets of Detroit, like his father, he works the Beverly Hills area, assumingly arresting people for using someone’s pool without permission, or using the wrong fork over dinner.

The pilot, to be shown by CBS, will feature Eddie Murphy reprising his role as daddy Foley and will make regular cameos if the pilot is successful. The other cast slots still appear to be up for grabs. Rumors of people in line for the lead, Axel’s son Aaron, include Saturday Night Lives Jay Pharoah among others. There is still no word on whether Eddies movie co-stars, Judge Reinhold and John Ashton, will make an appearance.

BHC3

Show running, writing and fifty percent of production duties fall to, seemingly greedy, creator of The Shield Shawn Ryan, which is the first bit of good news. The second would be that the other fifty percent of production duties will be taken up by Axel Foley himself–Eddie Murphy. Hopefully, with Murphy on board, most of the feel of original movies can be captured in the series which would make it worth a watch. If it’s too different it will be rubbish and upset a lot of people. We shall see.

The World Still Wants More Firefly

fireflybanner

If you’re even the littlest bit nerdy then there is no way you haven’t herd of Joss Whedon’s Firefly. The fourteen episode series and follow up feature film still suffer with a seemingly incurable case of popularity. The cast are still very much in demand to appear at comic and movie cons all over the world and not a week goes by without someone bugging poor old Whedon about another series.

If for some odd reason, maybe death, you’ve never heard of Firefly then here’s what it was basically about:-

Imagine if the Millennium Falcon had a full crew, only instead of a Wookie there was a ginger man with an amazing array of Hawaiian shirts and a whole lot more sarcasm.

There, good right?

SerenityPosterShip

All of this epicness started as a series of fourteen episodes in 2002 on the Fox network, but was cancelled for no apparent reason after only eleven were aired. Following its cancellation the cast and crew were reunited for the follow up movie, Serenity, which followed on from the ill-fated series as a kind of last hurrah to give everything something of an ending. Both series and movie followed the crew of the Firefly class smuggling starship named Serenity (name of the series and movie all in one ship, clever) as they did whatever they could to keep on keeping on.  The crew’s luck took a turn for the worse when they took on two passengers who, unbeknown to the crew, happened to be the most wanted pair in the galaxy. Hilarity and fights ensue.

So now here we sit ten years on and people are still eager to see more, and that got me to thinking, just where could they go from where the movie finished?

Before we go any further the rest of the piece contains !!SPOILERS!! So, if you’ve not seen the series or movie then go and watch them and come back to finish. It won’t take long, me and the missus watched them all twice in two weeks and you will not be disappointed.

So, at the end of the movie the galaxy found out the truth, that the evil ruling body known as the Alliance created the psychotic, rapey and murderey strain of humanity known as Revers in a failed experiment to control a population through drugs. A couple of favourites end up dead but the majority are still left standing.

As I see it there are a number of options for the show’s creators if they were to give the fans what they want and continue the story on screen.

1. Another Series

Unfortunately this is probably the least likely of the choices. This is mainly down to the popularity of the cast and creators making them too busy to commit. On the subject Joss Whedon has said that in order to make another series you would have to:

Step 1 would be to create a Kickstarter to raise the money to make it!

Step 2: Cancel Castle. Step 3: Cancel Homeland. Step 4: Generally destroy everybody’s careers. Step 5: Avoid Step 2

I think we all know that Joss is pretty tied up with the Avengers sequel but what about the main cast?

Nathan Fillion (Captain Malcolm Reynolds) – Currently starring in the TV series Castle, has two movies coming out and is currently filming with Robot Chicken as the voice of Green Lantern.

Gina Torres (Zoe Washburne) – Staring in the TV series Suits and is a voice in Transformers Prime.

Alan Tudyk (Hoban Washburne) – Has a crap load of movies coming out including Wreck-It Ralph and is currently working on Premature. Although he did die in the movie so probably wouldn’t appear.

Morena Baccarin (Inara Serra) – In TV series Homeland and is in the movie Old Days to be released next year.

Adam Baldwin (Jayne Cobb) – Currently appearing in, well everything, from Chuck to Leverage to Castle.

Jewel Staite (Kaylee Frye) – Currently in TV series The LA Complex but popping up here there and everywhere, like in Supernatural.

Sean Maher (Dr. Simon Tam) – TV series Make It or Break It with Much Ado About Nothing coming out this year.

Summer Glau (River Tam) – A little bit of Gray’s Anatomy with a TV movie to be released shortly.

Ron Glass (Shepard Book) – He was in CSI: NY last year and has a movie coming out later this year but was also killed off in the Serenity movie.

firefly_1

So, with the cost of production and the cost to the US TV and movie industry to assemble the cast it looks like it will never happen.

2. A Follow Up Movie

More likely maybe? Serenity the feature film cost around 39 mil to create and took about the same amount of money at the box office. Add in the ridicules amount of DVD and Blu-Ray sales to that and the popularity the franchise now has another movie would definitely be a huge money spinner. There is also a better time frame for the cast, meaning there could be the possibility of squeezing a movie in between shooting various massive TV series. And if golden balls Whedon was involved I don’t think many production companies would turn their noses up.

serenity

3. Spin Off

We have already seen that the full cast are all over the place working their arses off, but if one or two of them were free would a spin-off work? In reality I think only a couple of the main characters could pull off a spin-off series. Jayne or Mal may be able to support a solo series, but let’s face it they are never the same and all you think of while watching is how good the original series was. We wouldn’t want to end up with another Joey!

4. Copy Star Trek

Star Trek has given us many fine TV series. Plenty of spin off and loose tie-ins. But by far the most interesting are the different generations. There are three different TV series, set in three different time frames all revolving around the starship Enterprise. Yeah, it was different Enterprises and blar blar, but why could this not work for Firefly? Same ship, different cast, constant nods and respect to the original, original character tie-ins and appearing in flash backs, what’s not to like? It wouldn’t have exactly the same magic but it could work well with the right cast and is the only sure fire way to not upset fans. It’s is also my favorite idea and if Joss finds himself too busy I could step in and take over writing duties, but I imagine I would be at the bottom of a very large and talented pile if that job ever came up.

So that’s about it, the way that I see it. All we need now is for everyone to get together and make something happen. Come on guys, the world would be much shinier with more Firefly in it!

Bryan Singer Still Working On Battlestar Galactica Movie

Is Starbuck a man or a woman?

The answer to that question depends, in the most part, on your age.

If you’re a little older, then you’ll remember Starbuck as a kind of cheap Han Solo who looked remarkably like Face from the A-Team.

If you’re a little younger, then Starbuck to you is an extremely sexy, mid-twenties, blond girl who wears very tight tops. Both full of attitude, both can kick some Cylon ass and both equally as fancyable (although one would have meant a very different lifestyle choice for me).

starbucks

Starbuck and Starbuck in Starbucks. This picture is magical!

My point is this, although the 1978 and 2004 series are very different, the premise is still very much the same: Cylons come, people get killed, last people get on the Galactica and try to find earth while fending off numerous and weekly Cylon attacks. I don’t imagine many fans, of either series, wouldn’t like to see a big screen adaptation?

battlestar_galactica_cast_1a

Well, you’re in luck.

There has been talk about a movie for quite a while, but things have gone a little quiet recently. Step in IGN with an interview with would be Battlestar director Bryan Singer about what the plan his for the movie and where they are at the minute. And they were nice enough to film it for us. Have a look.

So, if you managed to miss any of those 57 seconds here’s a quick recap:-

Script, Cool.

Fits in well with both different universes.

Developments, recent.

Hope to do it.

And that’s about the length of it. But at least we know for definite that it’s still in the works. More than that, it seems that Singer is very conscious of the differences between the two series and is doing his best to satisfy both sets of fans. It will be very interesting to see what he, and script writer John Orloff, can come up with because you can count on one sure thing- fans of both series will be very precious over this property and if the movie turns out to be trump I imagine both sets of fans will unite in slamming the movie all the way back to the twelve colonies. My fingers are crossed for you Mr Singer.

Live Action Halo??? YES PLEASE

Just when you think you have seen all the hype possible over a Halo game they go and do this. The following is the trailer for a live action, digital Halo series that will set the stage for the next massive Halo game. This five part series, brought to us by 343 Industries and Microsoft, is set to premier on 5th October on the Machinima Prime channel and Halo Waypoint and is set to have fans of this massive franchise weeing in anticipation for hours of wasted life playing on Halo 4, due on 4th November.

So have a quick watch of this…………………. It’s f#%king cool………… Halo: Forward Unto Dawn….

Live action Halo has been a long time coming. With all the hype around the supposed Halo movie, which is still looking pretty hopeful for the future (Spielberg!!!), fans have been waiting for this for a long ass time.

And now, official series bumf….

Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn tells an exciting story of heroism and sacrifice on a scale never before seen in the “Halo” universe, taking fans back to the beginning of the human and Covenant war and leading into the events of Halo 4. Set against the backdrop of a United Nations Space Command (UNSC) military academy, a group of highborn cadets are training to be the next generation of soldiers in the UNSC’s on-going war with insurrectionists in the outer colonial planets. Among these cadets, Thomas Lasky struggles with his doubts about this war, and with the burden of expectations he may not be able to carry. As Lasky comes to terms with his potential as a military leader, the terrifying alien alliance known as the Covenant arrives and turns his world upside down. Inspired by the Master Chief, he must decide what it means to be a hero.

“Halo” fans who experience Lasky’s thrilling origin story in Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn will be rewarded with special insights into the story of Halo 4 and the “Halo Infinity Multiplayer” experience.

Directed by Stewart Hendler (“H+,” Sorority Row) and written by Todd Helbing and Aaron Helbing (“Smallville,” “Spartacus”), Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn features a diverse cast of established and up-and-coming Hollywood talent, including Tom Green as Thomas Lasky, Anna Popplewell (The Chronicles of Narnia) as Chyler Silva, Daniel Cudmore (X2, X-Men: The Last Stand, “The Twilight Saga”) as the Master Chief, Ayelet Zurer (Angels & Demons, Munich) as Mehaffey, Mike Dopud (Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol) as General Black, Enisha Brewster (Footloose) as April Orenski, Masam Holden (“Grey’s Anatomy,”Elizabethtown) as Michael “Sully” Sullivan, Osric Chau (2012) as JJ Chen, Iain Belcher (“Supernatural”) as Vickers, and Kat De Lieva as Dimah.

A lot of big names making an equally big noise. I will be honest and say I am not too sure how long the episodes are, but what I can tell you is that……..

An extended, 90-minute Special Edition featuring additional footage and bonus content will be available Nov. 6 in the “Halo 4” Limited Edition and on on-demand video services.

So, it looks as if the whole thing has about an hour and half run time. Good enough for me.

And when the series is over?

And when life goes back to a meaningless nothing?

What are we to do??

Oh yeah………………

Review: IDW’s TNG/Doctor Who Assimilation2 #2

I’ll admit it, I’m a sucker for a good crossover. In this reviewer’s opinion, the comic/television crossover that is the gold standard for comparison are the X-Men/Star Trek crossover comics and novel from the mid 90s.  If IDW’s Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who Assimilation2  crossover keeps going at the rate it is, I strongly suspect it will take that earlier project’s place. Unfortunately, we aren’t there yet.

Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who Assimilation2 (which shall henceforth known as DW/TNG, due to the fact that A) I’m not a very strong typist and B) My editors tell me that DW/TNG Ass MIGHT be a little misleading) had a very strong first issue. The bad guy reveal is towards the beginning, which is sort of unusual in these types of books, but the pairing of the villains could not have been more logical. It played like the first act of an episode of Doctor Who, ending with The Doctor and The Ponds showing up on the Holodeck during a “Dixon Hill” simulation.

The script by Scott and David Tipton, and Tony Lee is tight, as with the first issue, and the art by J.K. Woodward is top-notch. The story moves along at a fast rate, with the characterizations being spot on. The dialog fits with the source material, and you can tell this was a well planned story.

The only problem I have with issue two is that it also feels like a first act, though this time from TNG. We get the backstory of what the Enterprise crew was doing leading up to the Doctor’s appearance on the Holodeck. I understand that a project like this is a huge undertaking, and any missed opportunity will be sure to upset some fans, but are two first issues really needed in a series such as this? Or is this what we can expect from the rest of the series? A four act story, split between 8 issues? While I can see the appeal of this tactic, it does tend to detract from the flow of the story. Time will tell with issue 3 being released on 7/25.

Bryan Fuller and Bryan Singer May Team For Star Trek Television Series

Bryan Fuller is making plans for a Star Trek reboot television series. It has been seven years since a series within the Star Trek franchise has aired new episodes. J. J. Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek reboot film brought discussion of a show back into the collective consciousness and many are clamoring to see the new timeline established by that film displayed on the small screen. Abrams’ Star Trek sequel, for which no title has been announced, is set to premiere in 2013 and there has been recent buzz that a former Star Trek: Voyager producer wishes to bring the science-fiction show back to television. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bryan Fuller discussed the likelihood of achieving that, with the help of producer Bryan Singer, whose big project currently is the X-Men reboot franchise.

“Bryan and I are big fans of Trek and have discussed a take on what we would do, and we would love to do it,” Fuller says. “I don’t think anything is going to happen in any official capacity until after the next movie comes out. And I’m sure it would be wisely under J.J. Abrams’ purview of what happens. He’s the guardian of Trek right now.”

Reports have said that Abrams has been tight-lipped on his allowance of a Star Trek television series, but with the interest that Fuller and Singer are showing, they may be the best candidates for a new Trek show. The only thing that may stand in their way is Paramount Pictures and J. J. Abrams himself; their approval would have to be met before any reboot television program could premiere and would probably have to work with the schedules for any subsequent films in the Star Trek movie franchise.

Bryan Singer in Star Trek: Nemesis

Bryan Singer in Star Trek: Nemesis

Both Fuller and Singer are well acquainted with the Star Trek universe. Bryan Fuller was a writer and producer on Star Trek: Voyager and also wrote a couple of episodes for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. He is a self-proclaimed Star Trek nerd who says that he got into writing specifically to write for Star Trek. Bryan Singer appeared in the film Star Trek: Nemesis. Both filmmakers are currently busy and Fuller is talking Star Trek when has two other series either in development or currently filming. Hannibal, which has a 13 episode deal on NBC, is about the early years of criminal mastermind Hannibal Lecter and his involvement with Will Graham; he also has in development Mockingbird Lane, a Munsters reboot.

The only problem with Fuller that I can see is that not all of his series seem to last. He has a string of great shows like Pushing DaisiesDead Like Me, and Heroes, but they were all cancelled after relatively short runs. I hope that a new Star Trek series might have more staying power.

The real question is, what would be the subject of a Star Trek series? Abrams’ Star Trek reboot franchise has established a new timeline. We have seen every incarnation of the previous timeline on television up to this point, with Enterprise being a prequel to The Original Series. If new details emerge, we will report the news here on Word of the Nerd.

Have you hugged a STAR TREK nerd today?

Doctor Who is Filming in New York

Doctor Who Cast SoHo NYC |Tumblr Doctor Who

Being born and raised in New York City, my first exposure to the Weeping Angels in the incredibly popular Doctor Who episode “Blink,” scared me to my core. The Weeping Angels, once voted #3 of All-Time Scariest TV Characters by Aol TV (now Huffpost TV), are “a group of statue-like creatures that ‘kill’ their victims by sending them backwards through time to live out their lives before their birth.” It may seem like a merciful way to go – at least you live, right? – but I promise, once you have been introduced to the Weeping Angels,  you will never trust another statue as long as you live. As a New Yorker, this makes hanging out around town a bit nerve-wracking. However, one could always make a silly little safety leap in their mind by saying things like, “Maybe the Weeping Angels can only blend in among the really  old statues in Europe. Perhaps our ‘new world’ designs and architecture will keep us safe…”

Weeping Angel

That is, of course, until Steven Moffat decides it would be great fun to start filming some Doctor Who  for the new season on location in New York. Fraser McAlpine from BBC America asked Moffat in an interview earlier this month if he could tell him anything about what happens in New York; Moffat replied with the devious laugh of a creator set to scare the pants off American Whovians everywhere when he said, “O! Tragedy! There will be Weeping Angels there,” and he ended it with a smile. Fraser McAlpine’s gasp barely mirrored my own.

On the one hand, I am ecstatic my Doctor is coming to New York.  On the other, I am on pins and needles thinking of the horrible images that will be brought to life in my hometown. Moffat ensured Alpine that he will make full use of the iconic images and architecture of this well-known city, and, with that, there is one lady I have largely on my mind:

The Statue of Liberty and ManhattanWill Moffat make my Lady Liberty into a Weeping Angel? That is one thing I have always feared!

Just one more thing for us to think about while we wait for this epic 50th Anniversary season of Doctor Who. I suddenly feel inspired to go take a stroll in Central Park, find a bench, and theorize… Maybe I’ll find a Doctor there who can help me work this out!

Wibbly-Wobbly Doctor Who Season Seven Spoilers

Doctor Who Season 7This weekend DoctorWhoSpoilers.Com released some preliminary information about the upcoming season that may catch some Whovians by surprise. As we wait for what’s to come, here’s the latest and greatest from the Doctor Who rumor mill:

First of all, it is assumed that the season (series) will be played in two segments. Part of the season will be shown in 2012, including the  Christmas Special, and then the conclusion of the season will happen during 2013. The first spoilers relate to the timing of things…

What we’ve been told is that the first five episodes of the series will air in 2012 from mid-November and these episode will act as a swan song for Amy and Rory.

This would mean that the new companion will join The Doctor in the Christmas special.

Watchful Whovians have known about the loss of the Ponds and the highly anticipated arrival of the “new” companion ever since Steven Moffat uttered these words back in February:

“Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary is coming. In Cardiff, we’re gearing up for the biggest, the best and the most ambitious season we’ve ever made. There will be shocks, surprises and heartbreak – the Doctor is about to say goodbye to his very best friends, Amy and Rory.

“And then he’s about to say hello to someone very different – the Doctor is going to meet someone very new in the very last place he could ever have expected…” RadioTimes

So, if the DoctorWhoSpoilers are legit, we now have a timeline for our new arrival (which really just translates into a deadline for all of our theories about who this “someone very new” could be). However, they did not stop there. They added,

Fans of the classic series might discover that Christmas was merely the tip of the iceberg.

Although DoctorWhoSpoilers did give a disclaimer at the end of their post (“Of course, all of this comes from untested sources. So we’d advise you to take this with as much salt as you feel necessary.”), I feel this last spoiler, with a nod to classic fans, holds some weight when carried with the following, often retweeted, quote from a RadioTimes interview held back in January:

“There will never be a better time to be a Doctor Who fan, I absolutely promise you that,” says showrunner Steven Moffat on the topic of the series’ forthcoming 50th anniversary in 2013.

What could be more appealing to a Doctor Who fan than some timey-wimey, wibbly-wobbly way of recapturing the classic, or any former Doctor Who in our current timeline?

I can’t think of anything. Can you?If so, please share!

For my part, I am going to go brush up on my classic Doctor Who in order to prepare for the season of a lifetime!

Geeky Super Bowl Commercials

Super bowl commercials are as old as the game itself. In fact, the championship that pits the two best teams in American Football turns 45 this year. The Super Bowl is the most watched event of the year and the ad space is worth millions of dollars, but who cares about sports? Seriously, folks, why does everyone watch the game now if not for the commercials? In the past few weeks, the 2012 Super Bowl commercials have been unveiled and are being shared on Facebook walls across the world. With the Avengers spot, the G.I. Joe Retaliation commercial, and an homage to Star Wars on the slate this year, I thought we could take a look at Super Bowl commercials of years past.

Macintosh – 1984
This commercial, directed by Ridley Scott, was envisioned by a young Steve Jobs, who wanted to introduce the Macintosh personal computer to the world. The commercial’s plot seems to be ripped from the pages of George Orwell’s “Nineteen Eighty-Four” where IBM is represented as “Big Brother” and Apple are the liberators which will put the power of information back into the hands of the people.

Xerox – Monks discover the copy machine
This commercial shows a monastery in which manuscripts are in high demand. Rather than copy them all by hand, one monk decides to enlist the help of his friends at Xerox, who have developed a new product that can help make his copies.

Radio Shack TRS 80 – The Dawn of a New Era
Here, TV’s Dr. David Banner, Bill Bixby, advertises the Tandy by Radio Shack. It just so happens to come the same year as the introduction of Macintosh, 1984 was certainly a year of technological innovation. Bixby was still a household name in 1984, The Incredible Hulk having just ended in 1982.

Dante’s Inferno – Go to Hell
This ad from 2010 showcases the Electronic Arts game Dante’s Inferno with the song “Ain’t No Sunshine” by Bill Withers. Dante descends into the circles of Hell in search of his love Beatrice in the video game named after Inferno, the first canticle of The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri.

Apple – HAL
Another commercial from Apple takes a note from 2001: A Space Odyssey. In this commercial, HAL 9000 explains the Y2K bug and confesses that Macintosh computers are the only computers that are able to resist problems of the year 2000.

Volkswagen – The Force
In 2011, Volkswagen used the force to sell their new Passat. In this commercial, a tiny Darth Vader displays his skills throughout the house, finally using it to start his parents’ new car.

So here they are, some of Super Bowl history’s geekiest commercials. Which top your list? Check out Ad Land to view forty years of commercials and share your favorites!

Preview: Kapow! Comic Con 2012

Kapow! logoKapow! This May, Mark Millar‘s Kapow! Comic Convention will be returning to the business design centre in Islington, London, England. Taking place over two days (19th and 20th of May), the convention has everything for your nerdy needs, it covers TV and Film, videos games and all major (plus some indies self promoting their books at the Con) comics companies.

Last year was epic. Some of the panels last year included one for Marvel‘s “Thor“, British alien flick “Attack the Block“, James Wan‘s (Director of the “Saw” series) “Insidious“… And that was just the movie side of things! There was also a variety for TV shows including ones for The Walking Dead, Falling Skies, and my personal favourite, Misfits. Loads of comic panels and free signings, artists doing commissions in artist alley too, and if you got bored (which was very hard to do) you could go and play video games in the IGN arena. It was a fun atmosphere throughout the weekend, lots of Cos-Players walking around and loads of people who just looked happy to be there!

The full comic book guest line up for this year was due to be announced February 2nd, but Mark Millar being the industries biggest hype man, tweeted telling eager attendees that he’s waiting for confirmation from his “Guest of Honour” before he announces the guests… Hype hype hype. Some guests are confirmed already, highlights include big names like Frank Quitely, Kieron Gillen, Dave Gibbons, Paul Cornell and Peter Milligan… More to be announced once Millar has his Guest of Honour sorted.

Kapow! Crowd

I chose this photo because I'm in it... Where's Tresson?

When that full line-up is announced you’ll be able to view the full list of guests here. As for panels and schedule and media guests in attendance, they will be announced closer to the event.

Last year’s event was probably one of the best weekends I’ve ever had. Ever. I met a few artists and writers when I was there and got some of my collection signed by them. Personal highlights include meeting Simon Bisley, who signed one of my books twice for some reason, amongst other things (I don’t want to get anyone in trouble so I’ll leave it at that, haha). I think it’s well worth you guys making a trip to London to be part of it. Tickets cost £35 which is around the $55 dollar mark (Buy them here), but bear in mind, hotels and travel with cost you an arm and a leg (London is ridiculously over priced on EVERYTHING.) but it would be great to have you guys from the states make the trip across the pond and be part of one of the UK’s biggest Comic Cons.

Expect a follow-up to this article once panels, media guests and events are announced… And if you haven’t read about my failings from last year’s convention, you can do so here.

AND, if you’d like more information on comic cons in the UK, please feel free to check out comicconventions.co.uk. It’s a brilliant site and has all the information you’d need on where to find comic cons in the UK!

It’s going to be an epic event and I hope you can make it to Kapow! 2012 with me!

Keep it nerdy!

Green Arrow TV Series From CW

Green Arrow Cover ArtGreen Arrow fans get ready!  The CW is creeping ever closer to a live action series for your beloved masked archer, adding yet another DC hero to their growing resume.  Very few details area available at this time, but we do know that the executive producers/writers are Greg Berlanti (Brothers & Sisters) and Marc Guggenheim (FlashForward), both of whom worked on the recent Green Lantern film and Andrew Kreisberg (Vampire Diaries, Fringe, Green Arrow Comic) is involved as well.  I am sorry to report to fan girls that Justin Hartley, who played Green Arrow in Smallville, is not part of this new project.

I am hopeful that the CW can harness the success of Smallville and create another gem of a series with “Arrow”, as the show will be called.  I’d love to see the Green Arrow I’ve grown to love on the Justice League cartoon come to life.  His brand of wit and snark is always a welcome respite for me.  Fingers crossed that the CW can make this happen.

Star Trek 2 Filming Has Begun

If you’re like me you’ve probably been counting down the days since 2009 waiting to hear that the second movie has begun filming.  Well fans wait no more, we can now start counting down the days till it hits theatres on May 17, 2013 in 3D.  An official press release from Paramount Pictures via TrekMovie.com made it official on January, 14.

Paramount Pictures announced that principal photography has commenced in Los Angeles, CA on the sequel to STAR TREK from director J.J. Abrams. The film will be released on May 17, 2013 in 3D. The 2009 re-launch of the “Star Trek” franchise by Abrams was met with critical acclaim and a worldwide gross of over $385 million at the box office.

Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions present a Bad Robot Production of a J.J. Abrams Film. Returning to their posts on the Enterprise are John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, and Anton Yelchin. They are joined by new cast members Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve and Peter Weller.

Now if you will excuse me, I need to go drool all over Karl Urban.

Building A Better Wonder Woman

Thanks to some guys over at Topless Robot, we’ve got some alternate and somewhat improved images of the Wonder Woman costume that was released (original post here) on Friday.  Check out the alternate images below, then read the full article here.

I Was Wrong…Woman Woman Is Going To Suck!!!!

This is not at all what I was expecting.  If this is going to be how the new Wonder Woman looks, I don’t think I will bother to watch.  Like Halle Berry in Catwoman, it just looked too stupid to even bother wasting money on.  If this is the Wonder Woman we’re going to get, the cast and crew better no unpack their bags because this is going to be a short trip.

First of all the costume itself isn’t terrible, Adrianne Palicki just looks terrible in it.  Her hair looks cheap and fake and her makeup is overdone.  She looks more like a cheap porn movie version of Wonder Woman.  Perhaps a good first try but I hope to the Gods this isn’t the final product.  The long tight pants look great and the gauntlets are awesome; but the boots need to be red.  The emblem across her breaticles looks great and it more in line with a modern version of the character.
