First Look Preview – Venom #23

In next month’s Venom #22, Rick Remender‘s seventeen month run with Flash Thompson comes to an end. Issues #18-22 have been co-wrote with the man who will taking over as sole writer with August 22nd’s Venom #23, Cullen Bunn.
Accompanying Bunn will be Thony Silas, taking over from Lan Medina.
With the new creative team comes a new story arc.
Here’s a sneak preview of the first 6 pages:

First of all, how awesome is that splash page? It’s so good, it’s my new desktop wallpaper. As well as some sweet looking art, Venom #23 also features the Flash’s first encounter with Daimon Hellstrom (the Son of Satan) since the recent fantastic Circle of Four mini-event. Of course, with Daimon come all manor of demonic menaces. In this instance Eugene Thompson will find himself face to fist with the Monsters of Evil. What could they possibly want with Venom? The only way to find out is in Marvel’s Venom #23.

Available in all comic stores and on ComiXology on the 22nd of August 2012.

And the Ultimate Comic Villain and Hero is….

As The Dark Knight Rises approaches, LoveFilm have put together a poll to find out who fans think is the ultimate villain and hero by creating the character. 3,500 took part in the poll and the result isn’t quite what you would expect.

The ultimate villain ended up looking like this:

It seems fans couldn’t decide on just one villain so this is the result; a rather odd-looking creature. LoveFilm worked with artist Jack Lawrence to create the creature once all of the votes had been counted.

What you see is a mixture of craziness, tentacles, shape-shifting, metal controlling and capes. Sounds like somebody’s wildest fantasy to me…

To create this villain we have the head (44%) and outfit (39%) from the Joker – Batman’s arch rival. But the suit is influenced by Venom (20%), one of Spider-Man’s most terrifying enemies.

The rest of his body and outfit comes from Dr. Octopus (21%) for the metal tentacles, Doctor Doom (9%) for the cape, and Kroenen (13%) from Hellboy for the mask.

When it comes to powers, Mystique gives it shape shifting power (25%) and the ability to control metal from Magneto (19%), meaning most if his abilities have come from the X-Men books.

When it comes to Ultimate Superhero, Batman is a clear favourite amongst fans and it shows within the character.

The ultimate superhero would have the mask of Rorshach (27%), Batman’s suit (27%) and the indestructible claws of Wolverine (38%).

As that doesn’t seem like all that much, to even the field a little, the hero would have a Batmobile (29%) and also Batman’s utility belt (17%). It still does not seem like that much as this is the ultimate superhero…

Editor of LOVEFiLM, Helen Cowley said: “With so many great superhero films out this summer we wanted to find out what film fans thought would make the ultimate enemy. Any caped crusader would have their hands full if they came face to face with The Ultimate Villain. Even The Ultimate Superhero would struggle to fend off this foe whose powers and accessories make for a very potent mix of weaponry!”

So what do you think of these two characters? Would the super villain easily win? Do the lack of powers from Superman or Iron Man say something? Who would you vote for?

Marvel Takes Over Club Penguin

Club Penguin is Disney’s premiere freemium service for children. In the game, you play as penguins through all sorts of free games and earn points to buy different costumes. Thanks to its use of live monitoring and advance filtering technology, it is also one of the safest web services available.

For their latest event, Marvel Super hero Takeover, the premise is simple. A meteor crash lands on Club Penguin Island, powering up the dangerous Destructobot. Players can choose to play as one of the good guys to defend Penguin Island. Or they can be one of the villains trying to takeover and/or destroy the island.

At launch, you are allowed to play one of 14 characters, each grouped into ones from the Avengers movie, (Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Nick Fury, and Loki) or from the Ultimate Spiderman cartoon (Spidey, Nova, Iron Fist, and Venom). A third group includes Ms. Marvel and Lizard.

Marvel Super hero Takeover begins on June 14th at ClubPenguin.com.

‘Chronicle’ Director Has a Vision for Fantastic Four Reboot

Fantastic FourThis weekend my husband and I watched Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer. Why, you ask? Well, we’re a comic book loving family and a bad comic book movie is better than no comic book movie at all. Wait… no. That’s not it. It’s because it was Sunday and we were both too lazy to get up and change the channel.

What the heck happened with those Fantastic Four movies? was the question of the day. I know we’re not the only ones to ask. In fact, Hollywood has been all a-flutter with talks of a desperately needed reboot to this franchise. The only problem is: who will get the job of leading this new project?

Josh Trank had been in the middle of the rumor mill even before his film Chronicle was in theaters. According to a February article in Screenrant, back then not even Trank had a clue about his involvement:

Josh Trank

I have not met about ‘Fantastic Four’ reboots. I was on the press tour and had to call everybody up and ask, what is this about? ‘Fantastic Four’ is at Fox, and I guess someone theorized about it, someone heard it, and ‘Variety’ was like, that’s happening! I can’t really speak on that, because I don’t know what to say.

Well, I guess Trank got on the phone with the right people since because, according to Fox CEO Tom Rothman, he is hard at work, in some capacity, on the Fantastic Four reboot project:

Josh Trank, who did Chronicle, I think this has been reported, is gonna come on and work on a take, or a vision, that he has for it, so we’re very excited about that.[...] there’s a possibility of [him directing].  I mean he’s gonna develop it now, and then it depends on the script.

So, let’s add it to Trank’s to-do list. He’s been linked to the Venom movie, the adaptation of the graphic novel The Red Star to screen, and the Chronicle sequel is in the works (although word is still out as to whether or not he will direct). Josh Trank says he has a “vision” for the Fantastic Four and after his unique “found footage” take in Chronicle it looks like it is something everyone wants to take a look at.

Feature – Comic Wallpaper Of The Day

Monday’s are always hard for us here in the Word of the Nerd basement.  Seeing as how the work here never stops, most of us work ten to twelve hour days, seven days a week.  If you take out the breaks when we have Nerf gun battles, we probably get in a good two or three hours of real work a day.  Today is Tuesday and we know you got cheated out of two wallpapers last week, so The Nerd thought up something extra cool this.  Enjoy your double dose of Venom.
