Think Dead Terrorists Are A Good Thing? – Osombie

When I first heard about this movie I had a vision in my head of a badly shot and very low budget B movie made in the worst taste. Needless to say I was very excited, and then I watch the advert. From the ad it looks to be a well-made, relatively average-budget movie that actually looks quite good!?! Have a quick look for yourself:-

That’s right. Osama bin Laden, formerly of Al-Qaeda before he was shot in the face by some U.S. Marines, is back from the dead and kicking up a right old stink in his old stomping ground of Afghanistan. And best of all, the movie’s called Osombie. Win.

The story follows Dusty, a yoga instructor from Colorado, who is on a desperate rescue mission to save her crazy brother Derek, a conspiracy theorist who is convinced Osama bin Laden is still alive, despite having been buried at sea. In Afghanistan, Dusty falls in with a team of NATO Special Forces on a secret assignment. Turns out Derek is not so crazy after all, and that Osama has returned from his watery grave and is making an army of zombie terrorists. When the group crashes headlong into the growing zombie apocalypse, Dusty and the troops must find and destroy the root of the zombie insurgency before it infests the rest of the world.

Osombie – IMDb

It also features a nifty little cast for a B movie. Corey Sevier, Eva Mauro, and Jasen Wade take the leads and Walter A. Carmona brings the world’s most famous terrorist back to life. Written by Kurt Hale, writer of such epics as The Singles Ward and The R.M. (no, me neither), and directed by John Lyde, from One Man’s Treasure and You’re So Cupid! fame(?) Osombie is available from iTunes and on DVD and Blu-Ray from all over the place, give it a look!

10 Movie Monsters That’ll Haunt Your Nightmares – Part II

A few days ago, we posted Part I of this series about the creepy monster villains you’ve seen in movies. Part II classifies entire groups of monsters who are so pernicious, they’ve appeared in movies and other media for decades.

Most of entries 6-10 feature  bad guys who popped up in scary bedtime stories and tales centuries before you were even born. It’s evil on a whole new level.

6. Spiders, Ants, and Bugs, Oh My!

Let’s face it, insects are pretty scary. You know it, I know it, and so do filmmakers. That’s why dozens upon dozens of scary movies have featured armies of killer insects, giant insects, or some kind of human-insect hybrids who munch on humans like candy. The Mist, Arachnophobia, The Fly, Eight-Legged Freaks, Ticks… the list is endless. They keep making these movies for a reason: some of the scariest things out there already exist in nature, which makes them the perfect stars for a horror flick.

7. Vampires

Don’t let recent stories fool you. Vampires are gangsta, even if they appear to have lost some monster cred in the past few years. You see them all sparkly, pretty, and lovey-dovey in those Twilight movies, and they’re super dreamy in Vampire Diaries and True Blood, aren’t they? But watch out. You cross those mofos and they’ll mess you up. Vampires would already be scary because of their superpowers and thirst for your blood (and flesh, depending on the story), but they’re even scarier because they might want to hump you too. I mean, c’mon, what’s more terrifying, a monster, or a monster who’s also your ex? Talk about head games. YIKES!

8. Werewolves

An angry wolf is not to be played with, especially if he or she is as big as you are and possibly as smart too. A werewolf is one of those monsters who’ll kill you pretty painfully, guaranteed. Maybe Jason Voorhees or Michael Myers will stab you or cut your head off or something, which would be relatively quick, but a werewolf will eat you alive, which is a special kind of suffering. You’ll actually like, see it taking you apart, and it won’t be pretty. Those things are hairy too, so it would likely be smelly as well. Ick, and… oh yeah, SCARY!

9. Zombies

Speaking of painful ways to go, zombie deaths are probably right there at the top. Being eaten alive by an army of rabid ghouls pretty much sucks, doesn’t it? Or at least, it sure does seem that way in the movies. It’s hard to say exactly why, but zombies and zombie apocalypses are more popular than other kinds from monsters that are just as dangerous. I mean, zombies turn people into other zombies by scratching and biting them, which is exactly how werewolves do it, but we don’t talk about werewolf apocalypses that often, do we? Zombies are especially frightening because they’re similar to us in appearance, so it’s easy for us to have nightmares about friends and loved ones who are cannibalistic undead, and about what it would be like to join them.

10. Ghosts and Spirits

There have been dozens of movies with spooky spirits that jump into people’s bodies and turn them into crazed killers. The Shining, The Exorcist, and those Paranormal Activity films are a few. Others, like The Entity, feature spirits that wreck lives without possessing anyone at all. But beyond their menacing aspects, ghosts are creepy because they’re probably the most personal of all monsters. We all know at least one person who’s claimed to see one, and maybe you’ve claimed the same yourself. Zombies, werewolves, and vampires? You probably haven’t met many people who’ve said they’ve seen one of those, now have you? Nope, it’s ghosts that are the most relevant to our real lives, which makes them especially creepy.

Reviewer’s Word: Resident Evil: Retribution

Let me first say to the ladies and any male fans of cosmetics – rest assured, apparently even after a zombie apocalypse, there is an abundance of hair dye and eyeliner.

Movie goers will either love Resident Evil: Retribution or hate it.  The franchise has proven to be fairly polarizing and this fifth installment is no exception.  If the Resident Evil movies haven’t won you over yet, you will find nothing redeeming in this latest chapter. But, if Alice’s adventures in kicking Umbrella ass have been enjoyable in Resident EvilRE: ApocalypseRE: Extinction, and RE: Afterlife, Retribution is a grand edition to the mix.

The film starts off where Afterlife ended.  The beginning few minutes are some of the best in  Resident Evil film history.  With no deeper of a plot than escaping the ultimate in Umbrella labs, Alice (Milla Jovovich)  is joined by some familiar faces from films past and gets help from a very questionable source.  The film also introduces some familiar characters from the Capcom game series.  The first film started as more of a prequel to the game series but has slowly developed its own canon while sharing a universe with the game and mingling with game characters.  While the Redfields are curiously missing this go round, Jill Valentine (Sienna Guillory) makes her return and we are introduced Barry Burton (Kevin Durand), Leon S. Kennedy (the oh so handsome Johann Urb), and Ada Wong (Li Bingbing).  And of course how can we forget Albert Wesker (Shawn Roberts)- Alice’s greatest nemesis (no pun intended) is back.

Bingbing as Ada just looks unreal in the most awesome way

While Kevin Durand playing a more heroic type instead of a creepy villain is the freshest thing about the film, Johan Urb is really really nice to look at, and Li Bingbing makes a dazzling entry.  I don’t know if it was intentional on the director’s part, but Wong in her fitted red dress with thigh high slit almost looks as if the actual character was sliced out of the video game and superimposed into the movie’s screen. It was enough to make me question for a moment if Li Bingbing was a real person.

The zombie effects were perfect; I jumped out of my seat during a few scenes, and Milla is in top form with commentary such as “You’ve got to be kidding?” when seeing the two more outrageous villains she has to contend with. Her exasperation made her more human, offered a laugh, and mirrored what many viewers were probably thinking.  Fan favorite monsters appear in company with the usual zombies that started it all.

The film is pretty much nonstop action for about 90 minutes and we are not left with a story tied in a tidy bow (were you really expecting that anyway). We are left with an ending of epic proportions and a hint at what could be the most ambitious, fantastic story in the arc if they continue with a sixth film.  Milla has stated that director/writer Paul W. S. Anderson already has a rough outline of the story and if the sales for Retribution are good, a sequel could happen. The film has taken first place this week with an expected 21.1 million, so chances are in favor of that part six.

What works in the film is the audience’s love of Milla. Milla moves through her stunts effortlessly while looking awesome. And even when infected with a mutant virus, her character Alice is still human and the heart of the story and Milla portrays that believably. Wesker is deliciously sleazy and fun to hate.  The music by Tomandandy is incredible and never overpowers the action on screen. And even after five films, I still think the good old fashioned original zombie mutants are scary as hell.  And the ending. The last shot left me in awe. Visually stunning graphic masterpiece with a fabulous score and wardrobe.

What doesn’t work so well is a very narrow plot that could have been a little more expanded on. It’s very predictable. And the acting? Well, my better half asked “Do they intentionally act bad for these films?”  While certainly not on par with some of those Syfy TV movies, it’s not going to win any awards. Also, with the huge catalog of monsters available in the Resident Evil world, it was disappointing to see them not take advantage of new baddies.

In a nutshell, if you’re a fan, by all means see this in the theater. If you are generally not disposed to liking inspired by video game films, this isn’t going to change your mind on them.  Unfortunately I can’t offer an opinion on the 3D. 3D films tend to give me headaches, so I had to stick with good old 2d. But I have to admit there was only one scene where I thought I may have missed something awesome by going 2D.

ZombieU Brings M-Content to WiiU

Throughout the last few years as the Wii gained insane popularity and subsequently began to fall off the marketplace for hardcore games, we recognized that Nintendo had tapped an entirely new market. This market was a huge group of casual gamers looking for family-friendly entertainment, and the Wii was able to deliver that.

But the WiiU is looking to change the face of Nintendo home consoles as we knew them.

Ubisoft revealed ZombieU at this year’s E3 convention. The gory, zombie-fest is set to hit shelves in November, right around the launch of the WiiU console itself. The zombie apocalypse is set in 2012 London and is described as a survival-horror game.

A recent Ubisoft press release described the game as follows:

In the game, an outbreak has infected the population turning them into mindless monsters preying on the flesh of the few remaining survivors. This fear-fueled first-person shooter takes all the best elements of the horror genre and adds original interactive elements including a unique death mechanic that puts players in the body of a different survivor each time they die, allowing them to take down their old, infected characters and recover their life-saving equipment.

This implies a substantial change in the way we’ve seen zombie games work before. Your character can become infected by a zombie, and when you start up a new character, you can literally hunt down your former (now infected) zombie self in order to regain all the equipment you had been carrying.

The official ZombieU website describes the game as thus:

For the second time in history, a great plague has enveloped London in a fog of death. Big Ben tolls as hundreds upon thousands of the unprepared die or are infected by a sickness worse than death…

You are still breathing for now; but how long will you survive in the labyrinth of London streets and underground? The horrifying remains of humanity ravaged by the foul disease shuffle through the streets waiting to prey on your living flesh at every turn!

ZombiU is built from the ground up to take full advantage of the Wii U™ and its revolutionary controller that will test your will to survive in a fear-fueled zombie Survival Horror First Person Shooter. So grab hold of the Swiss Knife of survival kits – your Nintendo Wii U controller and make every second count; you only get one chance.

Stay human, we are a dying breed.

This game is definitely a Mature game, as is noted in the ESRB rating the game has received. Beyond that, the game seems to be creating some definite horror – a type of game the original Wii was sorely lacking. Ubisoft has a new trailer up on their Youtube Channel as well. The trailer can be found here (youtube login required)

Also, check out these awesome screenshots! (Click for full-sized images!)

So, what do you think? Is the WiiU doing enough to bring mature content to gamers who need more than just Kirby and Mario? Do you feel the zombie apocalypse game is simply too played out at this point to have the impact that Ubisoft wants it to have? Do you like what you’re seeing with the WiiU tablet-controller functionality? Let us know in the comments below!

Note: For all my fellow Trophy Whores (yes, that’s our proper name) 15 points = Bronze, 30 = Silver and 90 = Gold.

With its claimed play time of 30+ hours, it’s no surprise that a lot of that list is campaign based. The majority of the rest are the typical “Do this thing 10 times” “Collect this many things” we’ve come to expect. A few others may actually reveal some plot points. Could “Ada’s Demise” be literal? Could it be a spoiler of the death of one of the most well-liked characters of the series? “Big Trouble in China” and “Tragedy in Europe” are almost certainly revealing, albeit vaguely, the settings for some sections of the game.

With the enormous critical acclaim of Resident Evil 4 and the surprisingly successful successor that was Resident Evil 5, it should be very interesting to see what kind of game Capcom will be releasing in October.

Day Z Announced as Standalone Game

What began as an ARMA II mod is now going to be a standalone game. But we wouldn’t recommend standing alone in Chernarus for too long.

Day Z was a wildly successful mod, hitting one million players in just four months. It is a realistic survival, open world multiplayer game, pitting you and other players against the living dead. You need to scavenge for supplies, select your weapons, avoid infection, kill off zombies, and beware your fellow players. It has been called one of the best mods of all time, and according to PC Gamer, Day Z is one of the most important things to happen to PC Gaming in 2012.

Now, thanks to Bohemia Interactive and Dean “Rocket” Hall, the mod’s lead developer, you will no longer need ARMA II to join in the fun. According to Hall, “The project will follow the Minecraft development model; fast iterations with the community alpha available for a heavily discounted price.”

There hasn’t been a price announced just yet, nor is there a release date. Heck, the official website at www.dayzgame.com isn’t even up and running yet. But the devs assure us that answers to all these questions will be coming in the next few weeks. Stay tuned.

Cockneys vs. Zombies- Preview

Prepare yourself, undead fans. Zombies will once again gait their way onto the big screen, this time in London, in the upcoming movie Cockneys vs. Zombies. The film will debut at the London FrightFest, on August 23rd, and unfortunately doesn’t yet have a stateside release date. I can’t wait to hear when it is though, because on top of the typical fare (blood, gore, and cursing like a sailor), there are also old people. With guns. And hey, the English accents add into the fun too.

The film stars Bionic Woman actress Michelle Ryan,  Honor BlackmanAlan Ford, and Richard Briers. Watch the trailer below!

The Walking Dead #97-99 Will Be Reprinted

These days, it’s hard to escape the immense success of The Walking Dead. What with the multiple Emmy nominations

for the hit television series, (Series Three will be smashing onto our screens this October) and the comic book series going from strength to strength since its inception back in 2003, garnering international acclaim, including a highly-sought after Eisner Award for Best Continuing Series. As well as this, issue #100 became the best-selling comic in fifteen years, when it sold 380,000 copies in July, and went back for more reprints.  So it is perhaps unsurprising that many issues of this killer series are being reprinted!

The popularity of the TV series has done wonders for the comic book series, prompting Image to reprint each issue in a ‘Walking Dead Weekly’ style, with each issue being reprinted every week as of 2010.  Due to the success of issue #100, which featured eight alternate covers from the talents of Charlie Adlard, Marc Silvestri, Frank Quitely, Todd Macfarlane, Sean Phillips, Bryan Hitch, and Ryan Ottley, issues #97-99 will also be getting a reprint, with covers that combine to create a large, landscape image which will feature the newest villain Negan, and his infamous baseball bat, Lucille, who have been key players in the series-changing story arc, aptly named “Something To Fear.”

Issues #97, 98 and 99 of Robert Kirkman’s zombie juggernaut, published by Image Comics, have sold out, however, the reprints of The Walking Dead #97-99 are scheduled to be in stores on August 22 and are available for pre-order.

So, what do you think to the success of The Walking Dead? Will you be picking up the reprint variant covers? Does Negan terrify you as much as he does me? Let us know in the comments section below!

Third Flavour of Cornetto Greenlit – The World’s End

Director Edgar Wright has long said that he would do three films with chums Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. He’s cheekily referred to the planned comedy trilogy as the “Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy” (or the “Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy”) after the frozen British ice cream treat that will appear in all three films.

The red strawberry Cornetto appeared in his first film, Shaun of the Dead, as red was a recurring theme, seen in all the zombie gore, the color of Shaun’s tie, and the great line, “You’ve got red on you.” The British buddy cop comedy Hot Fuzz featured the original blue Cornetto, a nod to the boys in blue themselves.

News comes today that the third film, The World’s End, has been greenlit (that’s a hint to the final ice cream right there). Way back in 2008, Wright confirmed that the third flavor flavour would be green: mint chocolate chip. Why green? The World’s End is going to be a sci fi flick.

20 years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hellbent on trying the drinking marathon again.  They are convinced to stage an encore by mate Gary King, a 40-year old man trapped at the cigarette end of his teens, who drags his reluctant pals to their hometown and once again attempts to reach the fabled pub – The World’s End.  As they attempt to reconcile the past and present, they realize the real struggle is for the future, not just theirs but humankind’s.  Reaching The World’s End is the least of their worries.

The film is currently in pre-production, and will star Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.

Two New Walking Dead Games On The Way

The Walking Dead has been thrilling comic fans and TV zombie buffs for almost nine years, but video game enthusiasts will soon have two new games to sink their teeth into, both taking different approaches to the monster franchise.

TellTale Games has been very successful in creating their episodic Walking Dead comic book side story, simply known as The Walking Dead, for the PC, Playstation Network and Xbox Live Arcade digital download service. After receiving critical acclaim for the first two episodes, TellTale has announced that Episode three, titled “Long Road Ahead”, will be available for an August release.

TellTale has had some trouble with the development cycle for their Walking Dead, the second episode was delayed a number of weeks and now episode three has only a loose release window of “August 2012”. Hopefully TellTale can get on top of the release scheduling and players can expect more regular releases in the coming months.

But while TellTale is hard at work on the spin-off series for the comics, Activision announced last week that it will be publishing a first person action game to act as the prequel to the Walking Dead television series. Information is scarce on the project, but it is being developed by Terminal Reality, the studio behind Ghost Busters the Video Game and Star Wars Kinect.

The publisher promises to allow players to choose how they engage the shamblers, with the choice to fight, flee or hide in hopes of the monsters moving on without noticing them. Apparently supplies will also be scarce so players will be made to make some tough choices in how to proceed in some tense situations. The Walking Dead Video Game will be available on the Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and PC in 2013.

Is Ada Wong a Playable Character in Resident Evil 6?

The demo of the upcoming Resident Evil 6 came out earlier this week, and once again, hidden within the files was a surprise for RE fans: a playable Ada Wong.

Ada Wong first appeared in Resident Evil 2 back in 1998, and went on to make appearances in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis and Resident Evil 4.

While Resident Evil 6 will focus on two characters, Leon Kennedy and Chris Redfield, an additional campaign featuring everyone’s favorite femme fatale appears to be a storyline bonus. She’ll even be armed with a Hookshot grapple.

Ada’s inclusion has not yet been confirmed by Capcom, and it’s possible that she will be an unlockable DLC. However, due to the fan outrage over purchasing additional unlockable content already present in past games (we’re looking at you, Street Fighter X Tekken), this is unlikely.

Resident Evil 6 is due out October 2, 2012.

Rex Zombie Killer- Not Your Usual Zombie Hunters

Rob Anderson’s Rex Zombie Killer.  I saw the cover and thought “A cat, golden retriever, a gorilla with a baseball bat, and zombies? WTF.” And just like that, I knew the comic had to be mine. My second thought was “Oh no, an animal is going to die and I’m going to cry.” But we all suffer for what we love, and I love zombie stories.

The comic prefaces the story in this nutshell “In the wake of a zombie apocalypse, a small pack of animals, led by a golden retriever named Rex, begin their journey across the country in the hope of finding safety…and a home.”

Going into any story that revolves around animals is tempting fate if you are an over-emotional animal lover.  Something sad always happens.  Until now, Grant Morrison’s We3, which the author listed as an influence, was my only foray into animals being represented by a comic book.  We3, the story of three pets kidnapped by scientists for an evil plan, left me fairly disconsolate.  I braced myself for the worst and started to read Rex.

Within a few pages, I was falling head over heels for each of the animals.  Titular Rex the golden retriever  was raised in a lab by a kind scientist and knows of darker things to worry about than the zombies that he will not trouble the others with. Solemn Kenji, a gorilla raised in a language institute who is fluent in sign language and baseball bat. Kenji believes the best about humans and feels guilty about having to off the “rotters” with his bat. Brutus the pit bull raised by a drug dealer; he has seen the worst of life as a dog, but won’t go down without a fight. Buttercup is a corgi mix, brave and optimistic; she wants to make the others proud.  And last but not least, the precious and pampered “*Cordelia” of the group, Snowball.

Although the pages mostly feature cartoon animals, they are drawn conveying a range of emotion.  I enjoyed the good use of colors in a zombie world.  Black and white is reserved for the animal’s flashbacks.  Zombies at this point are so overdone, but Anderson has brought something new to the table.  The art does the story justice and creates a perfect balance without overshadowing the emotional depth of their journey with too grotesque images as is the norm in the genre.

Anderson says the story was inspired because he was wondering about what happens to all the pets after a zombie apocalypse.  Animals have a chance of surviving it seems; they are quick and sneaky but dogs and cats couldn’t open doors or food containers or gather things to take with them (enter a gorilla with opposable thumbs).

I highly recommend this book if you are a lover of animals, or just good storytelling.  I found myself laughing, especially at Snowball because only a cat would want to take a nap when zombies are in the proximity.  Realizing a lump was making a home in the back of my throat as I was running along with Buttercup and preparing for the worst. Seeing all the good, loyal dogs I’ve known in Rex as he mapped out a plan to save Brutus. In short, this story was overwhelming in a beautiful way and I think if you do not read it, you will be missing something wonderful.  What more can you ask from a story than to be touched by it? Rex Zombie Killer is one of the best surprises of the year.  As an aside, the gorilla with the baseball bat may be the strongest selling point, but for me, it is the corgi with the song that packs the most power.

Out now. Rex Zombie Killer from Big Dog Ink. Written by Rob Anderson with art by Dafu Yu, colors by Kevin Volo, and lettering and design by E.T. Dollman

Retails for $3.50 (worth every penny).

Fanboys Versus Zombies 3 – Undead Fun at Comic Con Continues

FvZ cover 2So, I drew short straw again amongst the comic book staff at Word of the Nerd and was assigned to review Fanboys *VS* Zombies 3 from BOOM Studios – what a chore.

Actually, I’m lying. In reality, when the post came through that FvZ was up for review again, I basically jumped at the chance, knocked the other writers out of the way and shamelessly begged my section editors to let me do it again. And you know, I regret nothing! NOTHING!

Written by Sam Humphries (Fraggle Rock; CBGB: The Comic Book) with art by Jerry Gaylord (Pulp Girls, Hollywood Highways, The BrotherhoodFanboys vs Zombies #3 sees our intrepid, heat-of-the-moment warriors, ‘The Wrecking Crew’ still battling the zombies that have taken over ComicCon.

One of the things I love about the way this story is developing is that they are not writing weak, defenseless women — in fact the women are turning out to be more competent at defending the group against zombies than the men, Of course the lack of ‘male leadership’ could be due to the fact that the men are are either vain ‘cameos’ of certain ComicCon star-regulars, or spend most of their time fighting over the women in the group.

As seen in previous issues, issue 3 is loaded with geeky references sure to make any fangirl or fanboy ‘squee’ with delight (the fact that one of the characters uses a working mech to dispatch a horde of zombies was one of my ‘total-squee’ moments).

Additionally, with a zombie oriented plot-line, it would be so easy for the graphics to devolve into a gore-fest, yet Gaylord resists that temptation. There is enough ‘gore’ splattered about that you can’t forget this is a zombie story, but it is done in such a way that you also won’t forget that at its core, FvZi  is FUNNY. Kudos to Humphries and Gaylord for the fine balancing act they are doing in this work — it isn’t easy to stay on target and balance gore with humor, but they are pulling it off.

And, not to give away a spoiler or anything, but you will NEVER look at energy drinks the same after reading this issue! In fact, I think I may add a case of the stuff to my ‘WTSHTF’ prep kit — just in case.  ;)

Runaway Success – The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead #97

The Walking Dead, if you are into comics or TV and have not heard of this series, then I assume you are a Zombie, or a shut in of some kind with no connection to the outside world. In either case, chances are you won’t be reading this so stuff ya.

Anyway.

The hit comic book and TV series have experienced success across the globe and both are still going strong. The latest offering from the comic series, The Walking Dead #97 – Something To Fear Part 1, shows that there is still hope among the rag tag bunch of survivors.

If you need a quick recap then here goes………… deep breath………..

Zombies come.

People get eaten.

Well, that about raps that up.

While it’s true that there is very little room to show us anything new in the Zombie genre, dead people come to life and eat brains, there is a lot to be said for this series. And in The Walking Dead’s defense, there is very little in this day in age that we haven’t seen before, but so as long as the story is presented and entertaining, I’m in.

This latest issue of The Walking Dead comic sees the start of a new story arch and hope spreading through the people of the Hill top community. While heading back to the community with supplies, Rick has a run in with Negan and lines are drawn. Could this be the start of a new optimistic future for the residents of the Hill top or a new reason to fear? Only time will tell.

This is an exciting series with a lot of good characters and is easy to follow at any point. Written by Robert Kirkman and featuring art by Charlie Adlard and Cliff Rathburn, this series shows no sign of slowing down or letting us take a breath. Which is good; who needs to breath any way?

Look out for The Walking Dead #97 from 9th May, 2012, and the return of The Walking Dead TV series in October.

Five Comics You Shouldn’t Miss – 25/04/12

This week, something that stems from 1929, heroes fighting, vampires, death, and a game tie-in. Plenty of variety then.

Popeye #1

I remember watching the Popeye cartoons when I was a kid, just wishing I was that strong after eating my greens, it certainly did make me eat more of them. Now Popeye is finally back thanks to IDW as they reboot the series through comics, which is the perfect stage as it did begin as a comic strip. Popeye also goes all the way back to 1929 so let’s hope that Roger Langridge can do it justice. Also, a lovely cover that plays on Action Comics #1.

AvX Vs. #1

For those of you out there that think the main Avengers Vs X-Men comic is too wordy or complicated, well here is your escape. 22 pages of heroes just smashing the hell out of each other and nothing else, well maybe a way for Marvel to make more money off you. Still, the fights have been short in the main story so this could add something to it, maybe…

New Deadwardians #2

This was by far the best books to come out of the four new Vertigo #1’s. Now the New Deadwardians is onto issue two and is set to expand the mystery that little further. I won’t spoil it for any of you but issue 1 ended on one hell of a cliffhanger. It’s a clever book involving vampires, zombies and mysteries. Where will it take us next?

Garth Ennis Jennifer Blood #12

This is the DEATH ISSUE. Or so they say. To be honest, with Garth Ennis writing you should expect anything to happen. In the solicit they say to just whack the characters on a card and play bingo, literally anyone could come to horrible end. They also joke about whether or not they could call it Jennifer Blood if she is dead. Could this be the end to the series? Pick up a copy to find out.

Mass Effect Homeworlds #1

Mass Effect 3 is landing this year and is one of the most anticipated games for the year. I’m not normally a fan of tie-in comics but Mass Effect has such a vast universe this might help to answer a few questions here and there. Each issue will focus on a different character. This week – James Vega.

The Drunknerd Tackles Zombies vs. Aliens

After a few rounds the other night a few co-workers and I stumbled our way into a rather juicy debate. If you were forced into a dire straits situation, which of the two would you rather be forced to deal with, surviving a zombie apocalypse or surviving an alien invasion? Like any debate there were a few “agreed” upon guidelines – for example, the invading aliens wouldn’t have ultra-sophisticated weaponry capable of wiping out the entire sapient race, you would have a 9mm pistol in your house as the undead began attacking, and it was agreed that survival would be a 50/50 hypothetical chance in either scenario.

So, using the same guidelines my intoxicated peers and I came up with let’s take a look at the facts, shall we?

Facing a zombie apocalypse sounds like it would be all fun and peachy right? After all, The Walking Dead and Resident Evil make it look so awesome when you shoot a zombie’s head off. Except when you get down to the meat and potatoes of the situation there’s one major problem…this wouldn’t be a movie or video game!

I know it makes things a tad bit less glamorous now, right? The truth of the matter is you would be in a similar situation like Dead Island or Dead Rising, where you are being pushed back against a wall constantly facing hordes of the undead stringing together whatever weapons you can find.

Although, the real unsettling part for me is if a zombie apocalypse did happen trivial everyday tasks like getting food or even going to the bathroom now turn into death traps. With thousands of brain-hungry zombies on the prowl you can’t even take a shower without feeling stressed and panicked likely giving you a case of IBS after day one. Personally, I enjoy not having to bring a twelve-gauge into the bathroom with me every time I’ve got to brush my teeth.

There is also the inevitable moral dilemma you’d be faced with in a zombie infested world. With nomadic survival tactics needed to survive there always comes a moment where a family member or someone in your crew will get bit and turn into a zombie; forcing you to kill a loved one or risk becoming infected yourself. I understand it’s a matter of survival, but personally I wouldn’t want to bear that burden, especially since it is likely to  happen more than once. Zombies just don’t do it for me – they epitomized stress and even though they do make easy targets for my 9mm I’m not sure I’m buying into having to fight them off everyday.

Then on the opposite end of things we have an imminent alien invasion. Perhaps, not as popular as zombies nowadays and a tad bit more unpredictable since we’re talking about a foreign species. However, what makes surviving an alien invasion more appealing than zombies is the fact you’re fighting alongside one another to save humanity. A Locust, Reaper, or say actual Alien threat would ultimately unite military forced and create militias and in doing so the situation creates a unified tactical means of survival compared to pure independent survival raised by a zombie outbreak.

It is within this ideal that I’d much rather face a bunch of blood-thirsty locust then a bunch of flesh-starving zombies. Both seem to point to our inevitable downfall, but I see a brighter future facing a bunch of aliens. After all, fighting an alien race isn’t just about your own survival – you would be fighting to save the entire planet! Plus, if it were a bunch of Locust or Reapers I definitely wouldn’t mind taking down a few of them with their own weapons unlike as I pointed out earlier some of those zombies I’d be picking off  used to be my friends.

To me there isn’t anything quite glorious in surviving a zombie apocalypse. It sounds more rad then it would be. However, if aliens did attack there’s a sense of nobility in fighting for all of humanity, isn’t there? At the end of the day the biggest difference is survival vs. war. Zombies are survival of the fittest and aliens instigate a war on all of humanity, personally I say bring the aliens on you can keep your T-Virus at home, thank you very much.

But enough rambling from me what do you all think? Comments are welcomed. Comment directly under the article or on Twitter @theMadCow9988. Till next week compadres.

Alterna Comics Zombie World War II Mayhem FUBAR

Back in November 2010, Alterna Comics released FUBAR Volume I-European Theater of the Damned.  Story and art led by Jeff McComsey with an assortment of other talents.  It’s currently in its second printing and worth a look.  If you are not familiar with the meaning of fubar, it originated in the 40′s as an acronym for “f’d up beyond repair.”  Which of course, lends itself perfectly to a zombie tale and a war story.

If you are a fan of the zombie genre and you missed this graphic novel the first the time around, it is worth a peek.  As McComsey asks in his intro, do we need another zombie story? Why yes.  Zombies are indeed a versatile so there is a lot of room to play. McComsey points out they are used for comedy, scares, social commentary and are about as “versatile as the f word.”

FUBAR is a collection of vignettes taking place during World War II.  No monster more than zombies can illustrate man’s inhumanity to man.  As the flesh tears and teeth gnash, the stories grow more disturbing and intense.  Do not expect any happy endings here. Or reasons; just the misfortunes of souls who trudge on to fight or fall victim to walking dead.

These are short stories so we do not get too familiarized with the characters. But knowing the narrative of World War II from history and movies, there is a kind of understanding of who these people are and the situation they are in that fills in the gaps.  The tales told are more disturbing and thoughtful than heartbreaking.

The black and white illustrations are misleadingly simple.  At first they seem minimal but looking closer at the panels you see so much more intricate detail, especially with the undead.  But sometimes there is a little trouble keeping the living characters distinguished from one another.

Alternacomics has released a fifth anniversary series of trading “sketch cards,” and though I am not sure if FUBAR is represented in the set, if it is, the card will definitely be a gnarly one.
