TMNT seems to be back in fashion in a big way at the moment. With all of the hype and anger over Michael Bay’s plans for the movie reboot (just a side note, when Bay started to do press for the second Transformers movie, he did say there were no robots in it, and we all know how that turned out. So don’t believe anything until the movie’s out!) it’s good that we can find some comfort in some classic comics. Conveniently enough, IDW are getting them together for us in one handy bundle (well, three so far), nice.
The classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles action continues in the third volume of IDW’s Ultimate Collections! In this outing, find issues #12, 14, 15, 17, and 19–21, featuring stories like “Survivalists,” “The Unmentionables,” “Dome Doom,” and the multi-part “Return to New York.” Presented in oversize hardcover, and featuring annotations from Eastman and Laird, you’ve never seen the Turtles like this.

With art from Kevin Eastman and written by Peter Laird, this third black and white installment continues this run of Turtles graphic novels from IDW. The comics are always a little darker than the mainstream animated 80s series, generally being compared to the feature films over the cartoon. So, if you thought the films were pants (your wrong) then you might want to steer clear. But, I do suggest you give them a try as some of the stories, mainly one shots, are very entertaining and feature all of your favourite characters.
The one down side that I can see is the lack of colour. Being turtles, all four of them look the same and it does have a bearing on the writing as most of the time speech is used to identify who is talking and who is listening. Having said that, the main identifying feature of the turtles (besides their weapons) was their colour of their eye wear and on the full colour cover they’re all red, so it probably wouldn’t matter any way! Also the price is pretty impressive, costing $49.99 (about £35) for the 249 page book.
But, if you are a TMNT fan who feels like splashing out, look out for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Ultimate Collection, Vol 3 from 1st August.
