The ‘Bark’ Side: Volkswagen’s Imperial March

Ah, the good ol’ Super Bowl Ad. The best ads always show during the Superbowl. Unfortunately, living in Canada, we don’t get the same ads you get in the States. We get 4 commercials that are repeated every single time a commercial break occurs. So we have to go online to find the great ads that we missed after the game. To be fair, the NFL is popular up here (way more popular than our own CFL), but we have hockey, and that is our sporting event of choice (well most of us anyway).

Growing up I never really had an interest in watching the Superbowl. I never understood the rules of football and would usually choose the team with the best logo/team mascot. So, for me, the fun came with the commercials. Back in the day, we did get all of the great ads you got and we loved them. I remember the old Budweiser ads and the beer commercial with the infamous penguin (Do bee Dobee Dooo…).

Now being a little older, I can appreciate the game and watch the Superbowl for all of its glory, sport and commercial entertainment alike. Which brings me to the point of this article! We have a new add from Volkswagen, courtesy of YouTube, that is too good to miss. Now, this isn’t their Superbowl ad, but it is a prelude to whatever is going to come on February 5th. Take a look!

How awesome is that?! Not only is it the Imperial March but it’s dogs barking the Imperial March! I am going to figure out a way to accomplish this in my personal life. I am going to go all Ceasar Milan and dog whisper the crap out of all of my friends canine companion. Calm and Assertive, I shall be the pack leader (or rogue leader- badump tsh!).

Some of the things you may notice if you slow it down or watch it a couple of times (which I have…three or four times over). Most of the dogs have some sort of Star Wars paraphernalia, attached to them. Some you might have noticed are:

The Black Lab wearing Darth Vader’s chest piece, the terrier wearing Chewbacca’s ammo utility sling/belt. One wears the chest piece of C3PO, one of the smaller ones is sporting Princess Leia’s infamous hairdo, while the pup next to it is armed with a lightsaber. And finally the afghan hound comes enters in full out AT-AT walker outfit. If you’re a Star Wars fan, and this doesn’t put a smile on your face, I don’t know what will (because it probably won’t be Episode 1 in 3D – ZING!).

This is Volkswagen’s second run with the Star Wars themed Superbowl Ad. Last year they ran a piece with a kid dressed up as the Sith Lord, trying to use the force on various things in the house until his parent’s finally give him the helping hand he needs. It became a huge hit. If you haven’t seen that one (I’m sure we all have, especially if you like Star Wars…Or the Superbowl…Or Cars) you can check it out here:

With this commercial, I am now more excited to check out what else is in store for the ads during the Superbowl. I’m sure we will have a few trailers to geek out about, most of which we will probably cover here. So stay tuned for that!

Nerd Up!
