Cinema Blend uploaded a new poster today for the upcoming film Oz: the Great and Powerful from Disney and director Sam Raimi scheduled for 2013. The image reveals a lush, green world beset by a tornado with a man, I’m guessing Oz himself, in a hot air balloon getting swept up.
Cinema Blend suggests that the film will cover goings-on in the world of Oz before Dorothy gets there, much like the novel and play versions of Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West did. This latest endeavor delves into the back story of the famous wizard Oz himself, aka Oscar Diggs, played by James Franco.
The website claims that Oz must prove his worth before three witches, played by Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams, and Mila Kunis. How he does this, and how he eventually becomes Oz’s ruler (which he is when Dorothy gets there later in The Wizard of Oz storyline) remains to be seen, but will likely be this modern movie’s plot.
The premise is intriguing, and tales from the land of Oz have certainly proved to be timeless, since we’re still reading and watching them decades after The Wizard of Oz came out in 1939.
Check out the poster below to see what you think. (Click on it for a super large version).
