The Main Man is a popular character with fans and writers alike. Conceived originally as a space biker in the 80s, his popularity skyrocketed when Keith Griffen took over the character in the 90s. This surge in popularity kind of baffles Griffen. He thought he was making a dig at heroes like the Punisher and Wolverine by doing what those characters do and cranking it up to 11. However, the audience did not get the satire and wanted more of this version of Lobo.
When rumors of a movie came out earlier this year, it was met with suspicion. At the time it was just talk and nothing else. In Hollywood, there’s talk of just about every project known to man. This time around, the rumors had one name attached to it: former WWE superstar Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson.
During a Twitter conversation a few days ago, the rumors were confirmed by the Rock. A fan bold face asked the Rock “Are you going to play Lobo in an upcoming movie?” The Rock said yes, he was interested in playing Lobo. He also said that Brad Peyton and Joel Silver are working on it.
This confirmation proves that someone is working on a Lobo script and that it is serious enough to try to pin down a star. But do not get your hopes up just yet. One thing that following Hollywood teaches you is that nothing is final until the day the film is released.
Until then, might I suggest that you track down the Lobo Paramilitary Christmas Special. It is a short film made by a few film school students a decade ago. This is an adaptation of a comic book of the same name. Tired of being the second most popular holiday character, the Easter Bunny hires Lobo to take out Kris “Crusher” Kringle. It is a violent little 12 minute fan short that looks professionally made.
So, do you think the Great One would make an excellent Lobo? Do you think such a movie should be made? Please leave comments below.
About Joseph Furguson
This child of the 80s does not look upon it as some gold age where everything is better. He is well aware that the filter of time causes the best stuff to rise to the top. Every era has terrible and awesome things, but most are downright mediocre. He loves to highlight the forgotten good and the deserving bad items of all generations.

I’ve never been a big fan of Lobo, or The Rock for that matter. However, I do know a thing or two about comic books and comic book movies. I can buy The Rock in the new G.I. Joe flick, but there is NO WAY I am going to accept him as Lobo. There has to be at least a half dozen other actors who I would cast long before The Rock.
This is going to be another flop for DC along with lines of how awful Ghost Rider was for Marvel. Nice concept, but poorly executed.
As long as fans of the character don’t write the movie, it will be fine. The successful stories are limited stories with 1-4 characters and little else. That way, they won’t write us to the intersections of exposition blvd and continuity lane. That’s why Watchmen failed. It was too faithful to the source book.
