We are now less than a week from new Doctor Who. With Asylum of the Daleks exterminating the air waves this weekend, the fine folks at Word of the Nerd thought you might like a viral video primer to the best oddball Who-related videos pulsing through the intertubes. Sit back, have some Jelly Babies and wander with us through time, space and the internet.
There may be spoilers for you, so tread lightly if you worry about such things!
(If you haven’t seen the first two installments of our lead-up to new Who, please find them on the main page and enjoy! We wouldn’t want you to feel left out. Besides, it will feel like time travel as you begin in the middle and go back to the start before you get to the finish!)
Video 30: What About Everything by Babelcolour (song by Carbon Leaf)
Babelcolour (Stuart Humphryes) is the master of the fan video. Not only does he have an incredible eye for mixing and merging clips, but he must have an encyclopedic knowledge of just about every scene of Doctor Who. He has produced great fan tribute videos for most of the main characters of Who throughout the years and this video in particular is one of my favorites. I had never heard the song by Carbon Leaf before seeing this, but thanks to Stuart, moments from this video will play in my mind’s eye when I hear the song from now on!
Video 29: I Built A TARDIS by Sillysparrowness
A young German teacher decided to teach herself how to build a TARDIS, by building a TARDIS. She’s very funny and quirky, and the girl now has her own time/space vehicle. In her house. The video is very charming, and you can tell she had a lot of fun (and a lot of frustration) while making it. This is the kind of thing that makes me proud to be a fan of Doctor Who.
Video 28: Doctor Who Meets Metal by 331Erock
The title pretty much says it all. 331Erock’s “gig” is that he takes pop culture and makes it METAL! I’m not much of a metal fan myself, but I really dig this video. The guy has chops, and fingers that don’t stop! He takes the main theme and infuses it with I Am The Doctor and creates a little magic. Just don’t bang your head so hard that you wind up regenerating from the impact!
Video 27: The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Daleks by solidbronze
Solidbronze (Andrew Orton) has produced an entry for the Daleks in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, done in the style of the 1981 Hitchhiker’s television series. The voice of the book is a very close match for Peter Jones (the original voice of the book on radio and television) and I think Douglas Adams would have smiled on this effort.
Video 26: Doctor Who – Every Story, 1963 to Now by Babelcolour
This video is another solid win from Babelcolour! He has assembled clips from every episode of Doctor Who from the beginning until now (I suppose he will have to re-edit the video since we will soon have new episodes) and he manages to sneak in some fantastic, iconic moments. The soundtrack to the video is an amazing piece of work by itself, some great lines and moments mixed up with Sweet Dreams by the Eurythmics. I know it is very long for a youtube video, but he rewards you for watching the entire thing by wrapping up with a great version of Sylvester McCoy performing Matt Smith’s “Pandorica” speech! If you are only a fan of the new series of Doctor Who, this video will catch you up in mere minutes!
More to come tomorrow, yesterday and all this week.
Now pinch yourself and smile…there’s new Doctor Who at the end of the week! Be sure to leave comments below about your favorite videos!
