In June, superstar writer and artist Todd McFarlane returns as cover artist on Spawn for the rest of 2012, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the popular superhero he created at Image Comics in 1992. McFarlane’s debut will be issue #220, which he’ll also write.

Spawn’s left an impressive mark in entertainment since his first appearance in Spawn #1. The character’s launched toys, an animated series, a movie, spin-offs and starred in his titular comic book series through it all.

Some of the featured covers for the anniversary will include:

  • The first of nine McFarlane covers will be Spawn #220’s “Savage Spawn” image, a version inspired by the first issue Erik Larsen’s Savage Dragon series; an original cover by McFarlane; and a variant cover paying homage to Rod Liefeld’s Youngblood #1. A black-and-white variant of each cover will be available as incentive to retailers, and
  • There will be a cover for the Spawn: 20th Anniversary Collector’s Special illustrated by Szymon Kudranski for #220 based on McFarlane’s original cover for Spawn #1. This edition features Kudranski’s interior art in black-and-white with extra content including some of McFarlane’s inked pages from Spawn #1. This edition is limited to 2,500 copies.

According to an Image Comics press release, McFarlane’s doing the tribute not only to celebrate the company’s anniversary but also to honor comic book history period.

“Early in my career, one of the things I looked forward to after I finished the interiors of a book was to sit back and try and come up with a single image that would catch the fan’s attention,” he said. “I had a pretty decent run with some of The Hulk, Spider-Man, and Spawn covers, and I’m going to come back and see if I can draw a few covers that will intrigue everybody.”

Spawn #220 will be available for order in the April issue of Previews and in stores June 6.
