Tropic Thunder Writer to Pen a New Ghostbusters 3 Script

Ghostbusters 3 refuses to stay dead. It has been announced numerous times over the last 24 years. The fist time the project was announced, Chris Farley was still alive and was set to be a part of it.

Over the years, the project has been brought up only to die several times, dashing the hopes of fans everywhere. There is always some wrinkle that kills the project, for better or worse. Sometimes, it is Dan Akroyd and Harold Ramis, who went on record stating that unless the script is perfect, they are not going to pull the trigger on the third movie.

But, to be honest, Bill Murray is more often the bad guy in this scenario because he actively quashes the hopes of fans more often. The simple reason is that Bill Murray does not like doing sequels and it seems like he’s actively looking for reasons not to do them.

This last time, Bill Murray got the script in 2011 and just sat on it. His reasons for this were unknown until two weeks ago. While promoting Moonrise Kingdom, Bill Murray blatantly told David Letterman and the rest of America about it. He felt the script was not right for the material.

To accommodate Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd announced a new script writing team earlier this week. For this pass at the script, Tropic Thunder writer Ethan Cohen has been assigned. For our money, this might be a good choice for the material. Cohen is an accomplished comedy writer whose credits include Men in Black III, Idiocracy, and several episodes of King of the Hill.

All signs point to a new Ghostbusters 3 with all original cast members returning. All that needs to be done is convince Bill Murray, a man who does not like doing sequels. Although optimism is often the best course of action, it may be better to remain a little cynical about this.

What do you think? Should Ghostbusters 3 be made? Should the franchise die out? Or would it be better to pull the trigger on the dreaded reboot bullet? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

  1. YESSS Ghostbusters 3 should be made! I’ve been waiting forever for it! DO you KNOW how excited I got when I heard snippets of Ghostbusters playing in Zombieland?! I thought to myself, if Bill Murray’s willing to own up to being a part of the franchise in a recent film, then that must mean he’s OK with it, right?!
I sat and watched my husband play the Ghostbusters game that was supposedly based on the script they had JUST to see the story through.

OH MAN. This is good news… please don’t let my optimism get slimed again!
