The White Devil boys teach us that life is not so bad as it is and although it’s good for a bored housewife to have a hobby, they should really research them before diving straight in.
White Devil #1 is the first comic in a four part series from three brand new comic creators. Written by Matt Evans and Andrew Helinski, and with art by Nate Burns, the comic centers around an average family living in a little known Alabama town. Fed up with how repetitive and mundane her life has become, Judy Harper goes in search of something new. So Judy and her friend Betty set out into the woods to take part in some good old fashioned group sex, blood-letting and chanting with the other members of an odd cult. But has she taken her search for something different too far?
I always like reading new comics from new creators. People who have been creating comics for a while can sometimes play it safe in order to preserve their career. New blood often means edgier comics that give less of a shit about themselves. And being a wannabe creator myself, it’s always good to see what other people are doing and what they can come up with. This is a nice little comic with some excellent art and is a very good set-up for what is going to occur in the rest of the series. A couple of bad points… some of the text is a little small and tough to read, some of the panels are a bit too busy and the text on a couple of the pages seems to flow in the wrong order (but let’s be fair, a lot of the major comic book producers are guilty of the same thing in their books!!) But on the whole, it’s a well put together book and the boys have clearly put a lot of time and effort in with some interesting and clever page layouts. I for one will be looking for issue #2 when released.
So if you are a fan of meeting strangers in the woods, orgies and sacrilege (and, let’s be honest, who isn’t?) then check out White Devil #1 and give your support to some newbies!
